Certain Goals

Sharp

Oooh, is it?
I was speaking with a couple of people the other day and one person brought the idea up of Gym Leaders in the game...he was basically saying that he would like to see stonger Gym Leaders. This lead me to think what are the possiblities of actually being able to become a Gym Leader in the games, choose your types, create a gym in a area of your choosing etc. But of course it means taking time to accept challenges.

Whilst I was on this subject I thought, why not be able to choose different goals you take:

Regular Pokemon Challenge of becoming a master

Becoming a Gym Leader as I said before

Pokemon Coordinator, dont like to battle?...this is the goal of your likes

Pokemon Breeder

Thoughts?

honestly, what on earth is the point?

your role in the game is already so loosely defined.

Your free to do whatever the heck you want actually. Want to be a breeder? you can hatch all the eggs and breed your heart's content. Want to be a Coordinater? You can enter as many pokemon contests as you can. Want to be a Gym leader? you can invent a team that follows a theme and imaigne and have link battles with them. Want to be a pokemon master? do everything.

its interesting, it's new, it's fun,
and it gives people a lot more to work for than the elite 4. of course, i'm sure it would be better if you could vary off your goal for a little. for instance, in the anime, brock was a gym leader (meaning his goal was complete) but during his time as a gym leader he differed off his goal to become a pokemon breeder

What I meant was, you pick a goal, play the game under that goal and complete that goal...when you do manage to complete one of them...then its on to the next goal and so on. I think this would make the game last a heck of a lot longer.

no it wouldn't. It'd actually make it a lot more shorter since you actually have less to do.

Most games would actually kill to have the sort of flexability that pokemon games have.

the majority of the enjoyment of the game is the experience of completeing the game in any way you want. In most other RPGs, you have to take on a certain role and play as that character, in pokemon games, your character and your goals are so loosely defined that you can really do whatever you want, there's no set limit to how long you can play. Putting limits such as having to choose a goal would take away one of the things that makes pokemon games unique.

PDL wins this thread.

Seriously, it doesn't matter one lick that you are given a trainer's license; you can do with that whatever you desire. This ability to carve out your own path in the game without the addition of specialized features remains the enduring legacy of the Pokemon franchise.

Besides, you are on a journey with your Pokemon, no? Sitting like a bum in a gym doesn't sound like a journey to me. ;[

If the game had goals in it they would have to make a bigger cartrige for the game because of the huge memory.

...who'd seriously want to do nothing but contests? Or hatch eggs, for that matter?

No. Now, after defeating the Elite Four and having to occasionally fight some tough trainers fighting to be Champion seems reasonable, but that's the only semi-quasi-"path" idea I could see being implemented.

Why? The point of adding new features is to have more to do at once. That's what's great about having new features. You can challenge the Elite Four, breed, challenge the Battle Fronteir, participate in contests, etc, all at the same time. There's no point of having only path if you can do all at once.

How about when you become the champion you become the leader of the Elite 4 you can still travel around the pokemon world doing stuff but every so often when you go to the Pokemon LEAGUE you would have competitiors to challenge you for the champion title and if you would win you'd still hold the title if you lost you would lose the title and have to challenge the Elite 4 again then beat the champion to regain ur title.

How is it 'new'? Around a dozen other people have also suggested this idea. It's hardly 'new'. But I do like the idea. I remember the second time I ever played Sapphire, with the idea of being a Coordinator on mind, little did I know I'd have to train to do GYMS as well.

NO. It's fine as is - at the moment we can do anything, sure the main goal is to complete the game, but there's so much side stuff and we can play with so much flexibility. And the "one road" thing IS changing.

I don't mean change anything...just add more detailed stuff like that...say someone wanted to be a breeder but you are limited to the detail it has (because they never really bothed with things like that)

I agree with you in that it would be interesting to have more side quests and stories, but the idea of becoming a Gym Leader is definitely out of the question in my mind. I know it seems like "OMG! Cool!" but it wouldn't be very interesting, and the mechanics of such a feature would be strange...
