Character Personalities...

The Compromise
Well, I have been brooding over my characters personalities for to long, and I really need help. :(

It's for my fanfiction Phoenix, the two main charaters. I have been struggling to find the right personalities for weeks, and I am sill blooming stuck. If you guys could help me, I would be very grateful. ^.^;;

Well, the first character is Tala. She is fourteen years old, ginger, and lives happily with her two parents. She is the average child. The problem is, I don't really know anybody who could fit what I am looking for, I can't relate to her myself, and I haven't read any stories with characters I could base her on. So I am really stuck. She won't be one of those shopping types, but she is not the brightest kid either. I keep on considering ideas, and discarding them, over and over. So I could use some help.

The second character is Domego, a Rapidash. He was easier, so I think I have his personality, but I am not sure. He is clever, full of pride and is arrogant about his abilities. He likes to conceal his weaknesses, he pretends to be confident when he is really afraid. He is afraid of falling, so as a result avoids joining races that involves jumps and prefers stable ground. But would this personality be ok? He is supposed to be Tala's friends, her soul companion, they have been together since they were two years old. They share a special bond that everyone human and pokemon have in their community. So I am a little stuck on there to. *sighs*

Well, that's all. Thanks for taking your time to read this! Sorry if this is not allowed.

I'll just give you some quick advice. I find that character sketches and having the personality fully set out is a bad idea. because then you have the charcters influencing the story, when you hsould have it the other way around. All I can say is that you should just write your stroy and see what your characters do or say. It worked for me.

I've read your fic revized and before it was revized a i think that the character Tala's personality could be something like a good little obeying country girl full of mischife but the some trematic event happens and se becomes like a tough Amazon. As for Domego, the way you have his personality is perfect.

Hope that helps

Ok, thankies! *goes to think over*

The problem with Tala before is that she was to much of everything, so I am trying to limit her personality. Which is hard because I wrote almost four chapters with her like that. I'll see what I can do...

Well to me, do not worry too much about personalities or else you might keep thinking about thier characters more then your story. This really happen to me once too. Just let the story flow and eventually your characters will change eveuntally, if you want them too. I can understand why you want to make your character's personalities better as there will be some reviewers that will look on that. If you want to change Tala's personality, then maybe read a few fanfictions here or different stories to get some inspiration.

The thing is, I tried letting it flow last time, and it really didn't work. I have been reading quite a few fics, I am a constant reviewer, but that doesn't seem to help either. I was looking for some help on the ideas front... Ah well. I'll survive.

Currently, I am considering basing her on someone I know, but I don't think it would suit her. The person is quite unpredictable, she may be mischievous, but she does have a mean temper. It doesn't help that I don't know her well, either. I considered making her a bit of a drama queen, whilst that would be fun, I am not certain if I would be able to pull it off successfully, and as I have never tried that sort of character before, I might over do it. Besides, I have a different character like that. I really am stuck... I have run out of ideas. :(

Worst advice EVAR IMO.

You can write in the way he suggests if it suits you, but you could also write a character led story, which is essentially the characters and the settting you've put them in creating the story. Or you could use a compromise between the two styles.

A good character needs to be thought out. If your characters and the way they are have nothing to do with how the story turns out, it'll probably be a bland affair. So if you're planning the story out, plan your characters out as well. Otherwise, if you need, for example, Domego to save a mysterious child from a fire later on, he'd have to have a reason to risk his life to do so.
