Tickle Me Cooper

A Black Protagonist
I thought it was a dude. Nevermind then. I have no real opinion on her. I think the guy and the other girl look a bit better, but they're not my ideal characters. They probably won't be too important to the story though; I have a feeling that they'll just show up every now and then to give advice and maybe some items like Lucas and Dawn did in D/P/Pt.

Lol, you honestly think they would be the first characters revealed if they weren't important to the storyline? They are probably going to be the most important parts of the story. Less like N though and honestly, not really like "rivals" either. There's probably going to be more of a focus on individual character development amongst the "Kalos Five." A focus on the interactions between the differing archetypes and a focus on how these differences in strengths and weaknesses will help them solve problems, both the micro amongst the group and the macro in dealing with the evil team and it's effects on the Kalos region, possibly the world.
...Yes it will all be very cutesy and cliché stereotypical and we eat it all up because it's Pokémon and that's what we're here for, lol.

I agree. I think the gender-opposite trainers should get starters but I think they should try something new for the other three. They could all gets Eevees for example. Or one could get Riolu, one Zorua and one gets the (assumed) 6th generation Lucario/Zoroark. Or their whole team could consist of a totally random sampling of all new Gen 6 pokemon

(Not the correct place, but can I just say how impressed Zoroark has transitions to a 3D model. He somehow looks cooler than ever before, and I didn't think he could get cooler.)

The fact that these guys all got art and are the first characters revealed after the main characters pretty much means they are important to the story.

It would be cool for the rivals
One is a regular trainer (probably the gender-dependent one)
One is a sky trainer
One is a contest/gimmick/equivalent competitor
One is another kind of battler/competitor?

One is a sky trainer
I don't think they would do this. This would mean it would be possible to play the entire game without battling them once.

Is it just me or does the female rival in the pink top look like the girl that followed you in the forest in one of the first trailers?
She doesn't just look like her, that is her. Yvonne shows up in the forest too.

I like that idea a lot. I think it would be a good change a pace to have the rivals specialize in something other than "OMG Imma get 8 badges and beat teh Elite 4 and become Champion!" They already showed they can do a storyline like that with Bianca. She started off a trainer and then ended up as a research assistant but you still got to battle her. Also, The developers did say they wanted the game to be about having fun with people. Most people don't do the same things with all their friends. Diversifying the characters' goals and interest is just as important as making their personalities memorable.

Honestly, I'm more interested in learning some details about the evil organization this generation. To me one of the most satisfying parts of the game is being able to take down evil team. However since the developers seem to be focusing so much about the interaction you'll have with other players, I worry that the evil team plot may not be as compelling as 5th gen.

May I just say right here and right now that I hope to Arceus there is no Flying-type Gym based around Sky Battles.

Don't do it, GameFreak.

Think of the children.

I was thinking about these characters last night, and now that I've thought about it, I hope that none of them are the main rivals, or any sort of rivals. I'd rather these 3 characters were sort of like the DPt Stat Trainers, except a lot more relevent to the story. We could still battle each of them, say about 3 times each, but also pair up with them quite a lot. There teams could be themed rather than based on stats though, like how Colress had a technology/futuristic theme. Judging from their appearance, I'd say the big guy could have a food themed team, the ginger kid a tech team, and the girl could have a 'cutesy' team.

Obviously we would also have a proper rival (maybe a jerk) who gets the starter strong aganst yours who we battles around 6-8 times, and then the opposite gender character could get the starter weak to yours. Maybe they could make a sort of Brenden/May and Lucas/Dawn mash up for this character, where they're not all that relevent to the overall plot but provide us with useful information and give us items etc (like Lucas/Dawn) but we also get the occasional battles with them once in a while (akin to Brenden/May).

Since Kalos seems to have older Pokémon in the Dex as well, I'm seeing her having Vivillon as her main and them some old-gen Bug-Pokémon as her first Pokémon. Something that can be found in the first routes, maybe like a Ledyba or something.

I also hope they won't do it lol, would be awkward if you have not trained any proper flying Pokémon through your adventure

I quite like these persons, I don't know why some here think they are all 10 and all the same age. The ginger kid could be 10 yes, but the fat guy and Sana are definitely older. But I already made a post about how I'll interpret their ages so I won't repeat myself.

Someone also said he thinks they won't actually be rivals. Well I thikn they'll get different roles of course. One thing we can say with 90% certainty is that they'll all have Pokémon since they start their adventures at the same time. One of them will probalby be less talented than the other. I think the opposite gender character will be the most talented (beside our protaganist of course).

Someone here said he's sick off childhood friends turned rival. Well, we know they're not really childhood friends since we just moved to Asame town.

That would effectively make it impossible to continue people who didn't train Flyign types. Plus, don't Sy Battles take place with far-away trainers, like on te other side of cliffs? Which means that unless that Gymis the size of the Great Canyon (not a typo), I don't see how that could work.

it'll probably appear in some kindof Bttle Frontier-esque area.

Posted this in Region Speculation earlier today but I think it's more relevant here.
What if: Fairy-type is the second gym. Throughout the story, it's revealed that one of the Elite Four member is the leader of the villainous team. You encounter him and Zerneas/Yveltal in the big final showdown but you don't battle the team leader. Instead, he gets arrested. The next day, you find out that the leader has escaped prison. So you go into the E4 and he's the last member. He's in his arena and you battle him, he's re-arrested, but because of his incarceration your battle with him is void and you must battle an interim E4 member. The Fairy leader is chosen to battle you. The leader has been helping you out throughout your journey and he's obviously a lot grown a lot. That way we get to battle Fairies from when they're really low-level until they're fully evolved.

That's an interesting idea. I'd love to see an important character like a gym leader or elite four member turn rogue.

If that rumour (the one with the gym types, which seems credible) is true, then we'll definitely be seeing Fairy as the second gym (Lumiose City gym?). I was thinking it would be neat if we got an 'unofficial' Fairy Type Champion. You know how Alder was sort of like an unofficial Bug Type Champion, since he had 3 Bug Types on every single team he used (BW, B2W2, PWT), maybe we could get that with the Champion, but 3 Fairy types, and then 3 wildcards. That's the same formula that Lance, Iris and Steven all used with their teams as well, except they were explicitly stated as specialising in their respective types, which Alder wasn't. Caitlyn for Champion anyone?

Well, nitpick, but Steven was never explicitly said to specialize in a specific type, although his entire team is Mineral Type based, so he really specializes in three types, but eh.

I liked didn't like Alder's "diversity" I'd rather have something like Cynthia or something as Champion, with real diversity in types.

The GL turned rogue seems like a throwback to Giovanni, so it could work, although I'm not a fan of the idea.
