If you're thinking that the reason I wanted Lyra to tag along was because I wanted to ship her and Ash, then you obviously over analyzed my post. I think Lyra was a good character and would have been fun to have in the group.

I would've liked to see Gary travel with Ash, Misty and Brock for about 5 to 10 episodes. He could've annoyed the hell out of Ash, this is mostly for humorous purposes. He could also make some PokeShippy comments with the intention to annoy Ash, and then the Gary arc could've ended with a battle between Gary and Ash. I think Ash and Gary should've battled more often in the anime... Good old Kanto Gary and Ash traveling together could've been a fun combination!
Also, Casey being added in Jotho for a small arc could've been fun, I like that Electabuzz song of her! XD
When it comes to the Original Series, I'm happy with the main casts, but some non-main-characters could've been added for a few episodes for nice arcs.
As a Misty fan, I would've loved to see Misty in AG, DP and BW as a main character, but I'm afraid she'll never appear again...

I think Macey from Johto league would have been a hoot to have travel with the gang, imagine her always flirting with Ash at times, he'd get so annoyed.

And Misty too, Macy and Misty would often fight. In the episode with Macey, I loved it when Misty said "He's already booked", it shows possession.
And we both know Ash prefers Misty over Macey!

I agree. They pretty much almost made Khoury a mini Brock if he didn't have such a cool Pokemon. But I agree that Lyra would have been a good travel companion.

As an original series fan, I would say Brock and Misty BUT only if they could maintain their interesting personalities with the wonders of (no!)... Character development! But of course that'll never happen because the wonderfully imaginative writers will inevitably screw all signs of interesting characterization up since they can never be bothered to think of ways to keep characters fresh. (And breath!) Seriously though, we wouldn't need to keep changing travelling companions if they could just take the time to think up imaginative plot lines and not, for example, turn Brock into a physical manifestation of B-O-R-I-N-G!

You do know that this is just an hypothetical question thread right? But still, even if they would have kept Misty and Brock's old personalites, I would have still got bored with them. It's not like either was doing much of anything.

Im not sure if i can see whats wrong with giving characters development? From characters it is expected that they grow, change, go somewhere with their story instead of staying completely same since their introduction. There is no point to such character being prone to end up at some point incredibly boring and stagnating, with people growing tired of same old gags and quirks repeated all over again.
Personally i liked when Ash became more mature in Hoenn and DP taking mentor role to others. When May grew from insecure in confident character growing to like pokemon.
When Misty became more mature and independent getting over complex of feeling less worthy to older sisters, while keeping her enjoyable traits still being feisty and quirky. Etc.
I can say how she was equally enjoyable imo both before and after growth, with new sides of personality which got explored adding fresh note to character.
In any case i agree about idea of Misty and Brock becoming traveling companions once again. It would feel refreshing seeing them at after so much time and how they would interact now that they know each other for long time ,advance their stories further etc. I could see Misty going on journey at some point to advance goal of becoming water master learning new things, entering tournaments and improving her skills(trying to reach E4 position would seem like logical step forward to pursue). And Brock could go on journey to gather knowledge about new pokemon, medicines and ways of healing by consulting with other specialists helping him in career of becoming doctor.
@Caseydia: If you find certain character boring, it doesn't mean it can't become interesting to you in future. It all depends in what direction writers take him and with what new, fresh ideas they come up for them.
Also Misty and Brock did things. They weren't central characters like Ash but they helped influence plot, had their own stories and contributed to anime and Ash growth as trainer back than in many ways.
Ill agree how they should have received more focus, but in end its not quantity but quality of someone deeds and in what way he contributed which counts.

There's nothing wrong with it. I was saying that it would be cool if we could see more of it instead of each character being pretty much the same for their entire duration on the show before dying a boring and drawn-out death. If there's one thing the Pokemon series needs, it's deeper character development.
Anyway, back on topic, what if Ash traveled with Gary? Now THAT would be an interesting development!!
