nah, Shinji is the first mark to start the "emo kids in a mecha" that Gundam Seed and other mecha series infamously suffers. Kwaoru was or even Toji Suzuhara would have been my choice of lead male character.
Actually, previous
Gundam series already had that mark in the 80's, so that isn't the problem (or rather, the real one). And as for Kaworu and Toji being the main male character, it would've been rather hard for that considering [spoil]they Kaworu only appeared in one episode and then died for the Lilim (ala Jesus Christ), and we don't see anything from Toji after he is unable to walk again after that incident with Eva Unit 3/the thirteen Angel, which is a shame, because I actually enjoyed their characters and wished that they had more development.[/spoil]

I think the reason why most people hate Shinji is because he tends to...not do anything when he can, or when he needs to. :\
That does make him who he is, and honestly, how many people do you think could handle and put up with what he went through in the Eva, especially an avoidant teenager who couldn't even like and respect himself? :/ [spoil]Then again, the movie certainly provided development and resolution for his character near the end, and yet people tend to ignore that.[/spoil]
On another note, I think I might like Straight Couger (name correction, took it literally when I first listed him) from
s-CRY-ed even more due to the fact that he his English dub voice actor is my favorite one, Crispin Freem.
