Cinderfella, pokemon style

Bigbrother87

Helping Hand
You know the story of Cinderella, right?
Girl has some evil stepsisters and a stepmom, wants to go to the Ball, goes there because of some help from a fairy godmother, and falls in love.
She’s late getting home, gets in trouble, and has a happy ending anyway, right?

Well this fic is very loosely based on that kind of story. I say loosely because the main character’s a guy, has both original parents, and there’s no Ball. I hope you’ll see what I mean as we go.

Oh yeah, this is my first fic attempt, so please review and critique at your best so I can get better at it.

One more thing, I just read the rules, and a rating for this would be G. With maybe barely PG later.

Chapter one
Emails are exchanged, the plot appears.

Hey Brian, good to hear from you again.
I’m still living here on the Indigo Plateau, we haven’t moved from here yet.
Since my dad’s in advertising we move around a lot, to follow the clients, you know. But since he's working for the Elite Four now, we should stick around.

How’s Seafoam? We’re having some nice weather, not a bit of rain yet.
I really love this big old house we’ve moved into, lots of space, and the gardens are huge! Plus I think I told you this before, but I’ve found a dratini living in one of the ponds back there. I’m becoming good friends with it, and I think that, if my parents ever let me, I can capture it to train.

Yeah, they’re still not letting me battle at all. I only have Bruce my charmeleon because my brother gave him to me. Yeah, Mike’s still going around the Hoenn area. He emails and calls sometimes, but not as often as before.

Layla’s still having a little trouble getting her groove right for contests. Yeah, I don’t understand how my parents can let my 11 year old sister do pokemon contests; when they won’t let me, at 16, do battles. They say they’re afraid I’ll get hurt, and they only let Mike go because he’s older. I think they just don’t want me to have any fun.

That’s about all that’s new on my end. Oh yeah, Bruce is learning flamethrower finally. I’m having a hard time hiding my training from Mom and Dad, but the huge yard helps with that.

Email back soon so I know you’re still alive,
Nathaniel Tickell

Wow, dude. Glad to hear you’ve finally got somewhere to train.
A dratini! Lucky! I’ve always wanted to get one of those; too bad they don’t live down here near Seafoam.

Listen to what I found happening near you:

Are you a pokemon trainer?
Still have less than 8 badges?
Then you qualify to enter the first annual Viridian City Young Trainers Grand Prix.

This competition is for anyone with less than 8 badges, ages 10 to 16, from any region at all. You will come and stay in Viridian for the extent of the competition, and compete in one-on-one, two-on-two, and even special pokemon battles.

Don’t have 6 pokemon of your own yet? Don’t worry, we’ve got hundreds of rental pokemon supplied by the Pokemon Academy for your use in the competition.

Many sponsors have donated prizes for this competition, including bikes from Hoenn, eggs from the Sevii Islands, and pokeballs from the Pokemon Company itself.

On the 22nd of March come to register at the Viridian Pokemon Center, then the battles start on the 23rd.
Brought to you by the Battle Frontier

Doesn’t that sound great, Nate? Oh, wait. Your parents still won’t let you compete, will they?
Maybe they’ll let you, just this once. It couldn’t hurt to ask, right?

Give me good news soon,
Brian Meagher

As I finished reading Brian’s email I adjusted the glasses on my nose. “Yeah, couldn’t hurt to ask,” I whisper. I was whispering because the computer is in the living room and Mom may hear me if I spoke any louder. She’s in the kitchen cleaning up after dinner, and I don’t want her to find out about this till I can figure out exactly what to say.

Leaning back in the chair to stare at the ceiling of our formal living room, I ponder what the risks are to asking or not asking.
“If I don’t ask, then I won’t get in any trouble. But if I do ask and they say yes then I can go with their blessing. Of course, if I ask and they say no, they may wonder why I’m asking and bug me about what I do every day.”

Turning the computer off, I stand up to move my schoolbooks back to my room upstairs. My Mom homeschools us since we used to move around so much, it’s easier than joining new schools each time. Carrying a huge pile of schoolbooks up wide, wooden steps is kinda easy, except for when they’re littered with stuffed pokemon.

“Layla! Could you Please come and clean off these steps?” I shout as I’m balancing on one foot trying to find a spot not already occupied by a toy.
When I glanced back up the stairs to see if she was coming, all I could see of her was her brown haired little head poking over the top step.

“Well?” I ask quizzically, “Are you coming?”
“Can’t.” She says matter-of-factly.
“Why not?” I say, my patience with her running out quickly.
“Because I’m playing with them right now; and if I move them they won’t be able to watch the show.” Now I could see her azurill’s head poking up over her shoulder. A tiny blue mouse with a tail as big as itself, it was perfect for any cute contests. Too bad I wasn’t in the mood for cute right then.

“What show! I need to get these books to my room, and you're busy cluttering up the stairs with your stupid stuffed pokemon!” I wasn’t quite done yelling right then, but I didn’t notice my Mom coming in from the kitchen.
“Move these stupid toys right now Layla! Or I’ll come up there and…”
“They’re not stupid! You’re the stupid one here!” She screams back at the same time.
“Stop, both of you.” My Mom says in That voice of hers. “Calm down and tell me what’s wrong.” It wasn’t a request.

I quickly get the first words in before she can turn on her cuteness and ruin it for me. “Mom, I’m just trying to get these books to my room. But how can I do that if the stairs are covered with her toys?”

“Why can’t you move the toys for Nathaniel, Layla?” She asks as she turns to look at the little troublemaker and her pokemon.
“But Mom,” She whines, “How can I practice for shows without an audience?” Wrong move kiddo.

“Move these now, Layla, and don’t let me hear you arguing again you two. Got it?” After she says that she turns around and walks back into the kitchen, not letting Layla say anything else.

After she moved the toys for me I lean down and whisper some advice to her. “Sis, when it really matters, never bring pokemon into it.” Then I climb the stairs, and enter the second door on the left, the one with the ‘Fire Warning’ sign on it.

My room's cool, as in awesome, not temperature. How could it be cold with a charmeleon lying in one corner?
As I dump the books on the bed I say to that same lizard in the corner, “Hey Bruce, wake up. We’re gonna go see Dargo now.” I’d already nicknamed the dratini, even though I didn’t own it yet.

Cracking one eye open to see if I’m serious or not; the three foot long, red lizard yawns and releases some flaming embers from it’s mouth. Since it’s tail was on fire at the same time I didn’t mind too much. We had already covered that side of the room in sheet metal to protect it from fire damage.

Since I wasn’t kidding, and was in fact getting some grey running pants and a green and blue windbreaker out of the oak drawers they were stored in, he decided to get up.
After slipping on my tennis shoes, I jumped up and headed down the stairs.
Narrowly avoiding the azurill on the stairs, with Bruce right behind me, I headed to the back door.

“Off for a jog Mom, be back later.” I say as I shoot out the door, heading for the back pond.
“Okay Nathaniel, be back in by 10 or else.” Since it was only 5:30 we had plenty of time to get some training in.

Thoughts? You’ve probably already figured out the story, but I’ll keep writing this anyway because I like where it’s going.

I’m online every day since I am in fact homeschooled myself.
I’ll update as soon as some people read this, so get reading!

P.S. I got the name from Jerry Lewis's movie 'Cinderfella'.
Again, this is Very loosely based on that story line.

This reminds me of 'A Cinderella Story' too with the email convos. But so far its cute. It's an ok length and so was description but could use some more. There wasn't much that happened in this chapter. So ill make better judgement next time. Not much to say yet but ill be back for the next chapter.
