Coincidence; I think not

Do you think it is a coincidence that Ash's name is Ash. Where Hooh is like a phoenix. Phoenix's are said to burn and die and then be reborn from their ASHES doesn't that sound familiar. Do you think there is a reason Ash is called Ash?;250;

I think there's no connection whatsoever. In fact, I know there's no connection whatsoever because Ash was not Ash to begin with. His Japanese name is Satoshi, and the name "Satoshi" has no relation to ashes at all.

I know what you were getting at, so you can forget it - Houou is NOT Satoshi's father.

I doubt his full name is Ashley but yeah, it is just a short version for his name like Jake. Besides, they said that they are gonna reveal his father soon and how does a pokemon give birth to a human and legends are genderless so it cant breed.

Ash is Ash because his name is a reference to Satoshi ( his japanese name as well as the first name of the man who invented pokemon).

Jesse GS II said it all already.

I thought his name was Ash because it's a type of tree. At least, that's what I've heard.

I think the connection with Ho-Oh and Ash is just a coincidence. When the first episode aired, Ho-Oh probably didn't even have a name yet. And like Jesse GS the II said, his Japanese name doesn't even come close to meaning Ash.

That was just PUSA getting the crowd to shut up. The Japanese producers don't care about revealing Satoshi's father because it's not vital to the plot. It was really a dumb thing for PUSA to say, actually - the Pokémon fan community, as a whole, is incredibly gullible and will believe pretty much anything it's told.

You people have it all backwards :< Ash's name is Ash. Ho-Oh is a phoenix. And in many legends, if not all of them, it's stated that phoenixes are born from Ash. Therefore, it is only logical to assume that Ho-Oh is Ash's son :D:D:D

I dont think the name "ASH" itself has any connection to Ho-oh. However that doesnt mean that the person Ash or Satoshi has no connection.

I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if, like nearly all other names for characters, Ash's American name is a creation of the dubbers. Besiades, it wouldn't be the only time they would use Ash's name to make a pun in a dub creation (the prophecy in the second movie comes to mind)

^Hate to sound mean, but that's incredibly obvious.

I believe that 4kids gave him the name Ash to keep with all the wood names for the professors (Ash is a type of wood, as are Birch, Oak, and Elm, which are also the dub names of the professors). Sure, it doesn't seem to make sense, but considering how he's basically friends with all the professors he's met so far, it starts to make more sense.

How did the japanese version of the prophecy go? Did it say "the world will turn to Satoshi" and doesnt have as much meaning as the american version or was it a whole different prophecy?

I was wondering that too, Can anyone explain that?
Anyway, There is no relationship to Satoshi and Houoh.

I've heard the prophicy was indeed different in the Japanese version. Also, Ash was one of the default names for the character besides Red and something else (though, at least in Blue version, the names were switched so that those would be the default names for your rival instead).

Quoted from Dogasu's site:
Also, the original legend never mentions the three treasures. It just talks about how the God of the Sea will fail and that a superior master will have to somehow soothe their anger. I guess 4Kids wanted to make absolutely sure that we understood what has to be done to resolve everything right from the get-go.

And why is Satoshi named Ash in the dub? Simple.

Sa-to-shi
Ash-Ket-chum

Three syllables for both names. Ash is just a random name they chose for English and gave him the last name Ketchum to fit the whole process of naming him. Especially since his Japanese name has no family name and is three syllables long.

As for Houou..NO CONNECTION, DAMMIT. It simply appears in front of trainers it feels worthy of showing its presence to. Seriously, they said this a hundred times before.

I see. Well, personally I liked the english version better. It was more dramatic when they were all like " Alone its song will fail, thus the world will turn to.........Ash" And then they all looked at Ash and it was hecka dramatic and cool. Then Ash ruined it by saying "Gee, i wish my mom named me brian."
