Another Fire Turtle Pokémon. Hello Torkoal. All jokes aside, despite the similarities between Turtonator and Torkoal, they do have some great differences. Torkoal has move passive/supporting moves and abilities like Yawn, Stealth Rock and Drought, when Turtonator holds greater offenses thanks to its second STAB in Dragon moves (which is near unresisted) and slightly higher SATK.

    Vested Turtle
    Item: Assault Vest
    -Shell Trap
    -Fire Spin
    -Dragon Tail
    -Dragon Pulse/Flamethrower
    Nature: Bold [+DEF, -ATK]
    EVs: 252 HP/200 SDEF/56 DEF

An unorthodox take on the standard Turtonator, this one forgoes using setup moves like Taunt, Shell Smash and the like and instead uses Assault Vest to punish foes who think they can avoid Shell Trap and capitalize on Turtonator's weaker Special Defense. Shell Trap is a given, punishing physical attackers who think they can break Turtonator's Defense, and made more likely by the fact that Assault Vest makes special assaults difficult. Fire Spin is for trapping weaker foes in, especially those that have no choice but to set off Shell Trap, while Dragon Tail phazes out anything that tries to use Tortinator as setup bait. Dragon Pulse and or Flamethrower round out the set, and take care of special foes that are too weak to KO Turtonator, but at the same time don't set off Shell Trap.

This set has a lot of problems. With no SATK, Turtonator needs a type advantage to quickly KO anything (lest it hits with Shell Trap). Additionally, despite the massive increase to Turtonator's special bulk, it is still handily 2HKOd by the special Wallbreakers of the Tier like Specs Clawitzer and Specs Exploud. Furthermore, the typing Turtonator has is not ideal for taking on Physical Sweepers, being weak to Earthquake, Rock moves and Dragon moves.

As for partners, since this set has no means of recovery, Wish and/or Healing Wish support are a must, in order to keep Turtonator healthy as long as possible. Pokémon that can take care of Marill, Carbink, and Heatran, who resist Turtonator's STABs are also appreciated, as they wall it pretty hard and can easily force Turtonator out or use it as setup bait. Anti-Entry Hazard support is near a must: a weakness to Stealth Rocks, plus vulnerability to all of the other entry hazards is painful, especially considering Turtonator's lack of/limited recovery.

    Other Options
Rest/Sleep Talk -RestTalk remains Turtonator's only reliable means of recovery outside of Leftovers
Wide Guard -Earns a mention in Doubles: Due to Turtonator's typing, it tends to attract Earthquake and Rockslide which can be blocked by Wide Guard

The idea of a dragon/fire type is very appealing as it has three easily covered weaknesses outstanding coverage, so the idea of Turtonator as the first fire/dragon that's not a box legendary was something to be excited about. Great defense backed by base 145 defense, and a okay special defense of base 85 along with a passable base 91 special attack you would think all these things can make it very viable but it's shortcomings hold it back from being a solid fixture in OU mainly his horrible HP Stat and total lack of recovery outside of Rest. It's moveset lacks Rapid Spin which would've made it even more usable but also gives it a solid setup move. I think covering it more of a sweeper instead of a wall makes alot more sense with what tier it would most likely see usage in, it has hard hitting moves across it's moveset with being reletively bulky enough to set up.

    Turtonator @ Firium Z / White Herb
    Ability: Shell Armor
    EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
    Timid Nature
    IVs: 0 Atk
    - Shell Smash
    - Fire Blast
    - Focus Blast
    - Draco Meteor

This takes advantage of Turtonator's dual stab while adding the additional coverage of Focus Blast. Fire Blast + Firium Z makes for a Base 200 Nuke in Inferno Overdrive, as well as Draco Meteor.

Diancie, Carbink, Tapu Fini, Primarina, and Azumarill also resist Turtonator's STAB combination, it's wrong in the article. Mega Altaria also resists it but isn't out yet as far as I know. Altaria also resists Grass moves and Focus Blast.
