This week we're covering Slowbro and Galarian Slowbro

Competitive...kinda
Ah Slowbro, one of my favorites if my avatar ID was any indication. Slowbro has always been a great Pokemon since gen 1, but it wasn't until it got Slack Off that Slowbro really came into its own and became the staple defensive wall that it is today. Late gen 6, Slowbro even got its own Mega Evolution and became even stronger, and though Mega Evolution has gone the way of the Berserk Gene, Slowbro continues to be a top tier threat. It's new Galarian form also grants it a few new competitive niches as well even if it is not quite as reliable as its Kanto cousin.

Acetic Acedia
Ability: Regenerator
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Bold (+Defense -Attack)
EVs: (HP 252) (Defense 252) (Sp.Defense 4)

Moves:
Calm Mind
Slack Off
Scald
Psychic/Psyshock

Set Details:
A Calm Mind set that turns Slowbro into a complete tank both offensively and defensively. Calm Mind boosts special attack/defense allowing you to hit harder and take special hits better, while Slack Off keeps you healthy as you set up and slowly steam roll the opposition. Water/Psychic is an excellent STAB coverage hitting most targets for neutral damage. Scald is every defensive Water type's best friend allowing you to do respectable damage and potentially burn physical attackers, making all the harder for them to take you down, and Psychic/Psyshock rounds off coverage nicely with the former being stronger and the latter being able to hit special defenders harder, especially now that Chansey is back. Ability goes to Regenerator which gives Slowbro added recovery on the switch, Leftovers compounds the recovery and longevity even further, and your nature/EVs are all put into HP and defense since Calm Mind automatically boosts your special defense.

Quick Draw, Quick Claw, Quick Slaw
Ability: Quick Draw
Item: Quick Claw
Nature: Modest
EVs: (HP 252) (Defense 4) (Sp.Attack 252)

Moves:
Nasty Plot
Side Arm Shell
Psychic
Flamethrower/Scald

Set Details:
A fun little set to use for Galarian Slowbro. Since Galarian Slowbro is not as bulky as regular Slowbro, nor is its defensive typing as ideal, this set plays into its more offensive capabilities rather than its defensive ones. I will admit this is somewhat of a gimmick, but it is a devastating gimmick when the coin toss lands in your favor. Factoring in the individual activation rates of Quick Draw and Quick Claw, the odds of striking first are a little over a 1 out of 3 chance. Coming from Galarian Slowbro's low speed, this ability is a godsend and has crushed many a competitive teams thanks to its frequent activation bypassing the speed factor. Nasty Plot allows Galarian Slowbro to hit super hard, Side Arm Shell is your reliable Poison STAB and has the ever so helpful bonus of factoring in the damage calculator to do the most damage, Psychic is excellent secondary STAB coverage, and your coverage move comes down to preference. Flamethrower punishes Steels types that are resistant and immune to your two STABs, but Scald offers burns and wider neutral coverage (Not to mention it hits Ground types harder). Nature and EVs go into HP and special attack allowing Slowbro to have some bulk and power. You may be thinking to yourself that this is a luck based set, but let me tell you something:

This is a 44 Veno-magnum, the most powerful poison gun in the world, it would blow your Pokemon's HP counter clean off. And you have to ask yourself, with that 1 of 3 chance, do you feel lucky? Well do you punk?

Are we including slowking? Because that has drain punch and belly drum...
We are just focusing on Slowbro and its Galarian variant here, so no Slowking.
Also, both Slowbro forms also have access to Drain Punch and Belly Drum, not just Slowking. If anything, thanks to Galarian Slowbro's attack stat now resting at a comfortable base 100 alongside its special attack, a Belly Drum set with Drain Punch is totally viable. The Quick Claw + Quick Draw combo alongside this could prove quite deadly if luck is on your side...

Mestorn

Wandering Battler
Slowbro, one of the premier bulky water types in the game. From days of old where it boosted with the utterly busted Amnesia, to becoming a stalwart wall with Slack, to boosting to become an unbreakable wall as Mega Slowbro, Slowbro has had a long and storied history. Now it returns to Isle of Armor to tank hits by forgetting it was hit in the first place.

Shell Wall
Slowbro
Item: Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
-Scald
-Slack Off
-Thunder Wave/Yawn
-Ice Beam/Psyshock/Yawn/Flamethrower
Nature: Bold (+DEF, -ATK)
EVs: 252 HP/252 DEF/4 SDEF

Defensive Slowbro. Its point is to come in, thank powerful physical hits, cripple the opponent as appropriate and then move on. Scald is great, STAB plus bulk increasing status spreading in one convenient package. Slack Off keeps Slowbro healthy when on the field, while Regenerator does the same off. Thunder Wave and Yawn provide excellent utility, enabling Slowbro to systematically cripple the opposing team with the appropriate Status. Final move is up to preference. Ice Beam has excellent coverage, Psyshock enables Slowbro to strike physically frail targets, and Flamethrower wrecks Ferrothorn.

Other Options
Trick -Always Fantastic disruption
Amnesia/Iron Defense -Combined with Slack Off, this can make Slowbro unbreakable outside of Status and Critical hits...
Nasty Plot -Can turn Slowbro into a terrifying offensive force, but it prefers Calm Mind to patch up its shaky SDEF since Slowbro will be taking hits
Trick Room -Slowbro's favorite room and makes it terrifyingly quick while under it.
Substitute -nice for blocking status, but Slowbro's speed means that it will often get Statused before being able to throw its Sub it
Oblivious -Slowbro tends to be reliant on its Status moves, so being able to no sell taunt is a fantastic trait. But is it worth giving up Regenerator?

I can't believe Goodra's listed ability was Sap Sipper, and knows only Special movies. Sap Sipper raises its attack, when hit with something it has resistance to... Gooey would have raised its speed when hit with a contact move.

Sap Sipper gives it a crucial immunity to Spore and Leech Seed. Goodra is too slow to capitalize on Gooey's speed drops (although it is a pretty solid ability for doubles formats) and generally doesn't want to be taking physical hits anyways.

In the future you should probably DM the POTW mods instead of posting about it in the next week's POTW thread. POTWs are rarely editted anyways save to correct blatantly false information (and even then, not always; look no farther than Marshadow's Gen 7 POTW and the numerous blatant falsehood still littered throughout).

Yea my issue isn't the ability, but that since it has that ability, it might as well learn some physical attacks. Base attack of 100 is not bad from special attack of 110. It knows some decent physical moves.

Weird, are you a POTW mod? The way I was brought up, is to not dm mods unless it's something only involving that person. And since there's so many POTW mods, no point in msging them 1 by 1 when it's something more of a group discussion, and a response is also not necessary. Unless there's a way to multi-msg, but I don't think I'm that important.

But these threads are kinda empty lately, hope nobody takes offense.
