Time for the next Pokémon of the Week and this week is the first part in our 3 part Pokémon Week celebration!

This week we're focusing on the Mythical Pokémon, Mew!

Competitive...kinda
A Pokemon that can literally learn ANY move? I wouldn't even know where to begin with making a Mew set. Think I'll give the baton to everyone else in the forum this time.

Wandering Battler
Mew, the first mythical Pokémon. What's more to be said that isn't already well known? Mew has the second largest movepool in the game after Smeargle on the account of learning every TM from every generation that it has been in (despite lacking the Wings for Steel Wing, Dual Wingbeat, the gender for Captivate and Attract, and you would think something would need to be part plant to use Synthesis). And unlike Smeargle, Mew has actually usable stats.

However, as the generations have gone on, Mew's once fantastic BST has been steadily eclipsed as more and more pokemon are introduced. Forcing Mew into a similar Pidove hole as Smeargle, a fantastic, unpredictable support pokémon with comparitively little offensive presence.

Mew is truly uncounterable. It has a move for everything and nothing is guaranteed to be safe switching in. So it is such a shame that its role is so easily defined nowadays, making Mew easier to counter.

Genesis Lock
Mew
Ability
: Synchronize
Item: Leftovers
-Block (USUM Tutor)
-Imprison
-Transform
-Softboiled/Roost/Recover/other
Nature: Bold (+DEF, -ATK) or Calm (+SDEF, -ATK)
EVs: 252 HP/4 DEF/252 SPE

This Mew set intended to shutdown an opponents pokémon and force them to struggle to death. Block starts the whole chain, preventing the target from switching out. Next comes Imprison, which prevents the target from using moves that Mew shares with it. "But wait," you say, "Block and Transform are so rare that I am not going to find another Pokémon running them." You are correct, but that is where Transform comes into play. Upon Transforming, Mew and the target pokémon share the same set, thus the target pokémon cannot do anything but Switch Out (which they can't because of Block) or Struggle which, with a Guaranteed 1/4 Recoil will KO the target before the transformed Mew more often than not.

This set works excellently against more passive targets, as more offensively inclined Pokémon will often KO Mew before setup is through or just KO Mew with Struggle.

Recovery move is heavily recommended so that Mew can survive the setup and perhaps repeat to perform it again later, but if you aren't using Mew's unpredictability, why are you using it?

EVs are to maximize Bulk (so Mew can live through setup) and speed (so Mew can outspeed targets and get the lock setup before they attack a third time).

Checks
The first thing in facing any Mew is determining what its moveset/role is. Team Preview is your friend. Look at what the other Pokémon are covering and what is missing on the team, and you can narrow down what Mew's moves are. Of course, with some Mew, the damage is already done by the time it attacks.

Taunt is by and far your best friend. Mew will almost always be running a Status move (as offensive stets lack the needed Oomph to be ran with Assault Vest or a Choice Item), so a fast Taunt will stop Mew before it begins. The other method is attempt to crush Mew before it gets started. Spectrier stands out for its ability to easily outspeed and having a good chance to OHKO a few at full health. Specs Gengar also threatens the OHKO and Specs Dragapult can OHKO after entry hazard chip.
