It's Aggron!

Competitive...kinda
Aggron has a special place in my heart as a Pokemon. First off, it's pre-evolution Aron is cute as a button, second because I ran one on my ORAS team in an effort to try a gen 3 Steel type other than Metagross and it served me surprisingly well, and third because by random chance I got my hands on a shiny Aggron complete with piercing red eyes and a malachite green body.

Competitively though, Aggron is often snubbed in favor of Metagross which has better offense, speed, and typing, and that last part is a kicker since Rock/Steel typing is terrible defensively thanks to taking 4x the damage from Ground and Fighting attacks which are common coverage moves. But Aggron's main claim to fame is access to the powerful Head Smash and thanks to Rock Head as its ability it takes no recoil damage, thus allowing you to spam the move freely. While not the best Rock or Steel type out there, it is still a cool Rhydon clone that will serve you well if you know when to hold and when to fold.

Use your Rock Head
Ability: Rock Head
Item: Focus Sash/Weakness Policy
Nature: Jolly (+Speed -Sp.Attack)
EVs: (HP 4) (Attack 252) (Speed 252)

Moves:
Autonomize
Head Smash
Iron Head
Earthquake/Fire Punch/Body Press

Set Details:
A surprise sweeper set. Boost speed with Autonomize, spam Head Smash where you can, Iron Head is helpful secondary STAB with added 30% flinch rate, and the last move is for coverage. Earthquake is excellent in power and coverage against Steel types, Fire Punch punishes Bug/Steels and Ferrothorn, and Body Press offers both excellent coverage alongside your STAB but also synergize with Aggron's high defense. All is invested into Attack but mostly speed, a Focus Sash is there for insurance against surprise Ground or Fighting attacks, but if you can predict well and have faith in Aggron's survivability then you can use Weakness Policy instead to jack up your offenses and really turn the iron kaiju into a true sweeper.

Wandering Battler
Aggron, the pokémon who won the name lottery several times over (JP: Bossgodora; FR: Galeking GR: Stolloss). Sadly this success in naming does not equate to success on the battlefield. Despite having the amazing Rock Head + Head Smash combo, Aggron is painfully slow. And while its physical bulk is great, its typing leaves it with major achilles heels to common Fighting and Ground moves, making its ability to check Physical attackers shaky. And poor Special Defense ensures that anything with a special attack will scare Aggron out or wipe it from the face of the earth. Aggrons Cons are large, but so are its Pros and let's face it, Head Smashing your opponents to paste does not get old.

Item
: Leftovers
Ability: Rock Head
-Head Smash
-Heavy Slam
-Earthquake
-Protect/Body Press
Nature: Impish (+DEF, -SATK)
EVs: 252 HP / 4 DEF / 252 SDEF

Tank Aggron, this set is meant to take Advantage of Dynamax to slowly accrue boosts and become unstoppable. Head Smash has the same base power as Max Rockfall, but with no downside, and patching up Aggron's Special Defense to ludicrous levels. Heavy Slam becomes a Defense Boosting STAB Max Steelsurge, Earthquake is a Special Defense Boosting Max Quake, and Body Press runs off your Defense and the Max Knuckle can make up for the lack of investment. Protect is a good option too, allowing for stalling out for Leftovers recovery.

EVs are to maximize bulk. Base 110 attack and Head Smash are plenty strong without boosts.

MOVESET #1: "Aggron, the Last Steelbender"
FORMAT TYPE: Singles
ABILITY: Sturdy
NATURE: Impish
EVS: 252 Defense, 252 HP, 4 Special Defense
MOVES:
  • Metal Burst
  • Stealth Rock
  • Endeavor
  • Roar
ITEM: Quick Claw
DYNAMAX POTENTIAL: No

In this moveset, Aggron takes on the role of a trickster, initially setting a trap with Stealth Rock to discourage switch-ins. It also forces unfavorable switch-ins via Roar, pulling Pokemon who are vulnerable to Stealth Rock to the battlefield. Since Roar can also rid the field of troublesome enemies, it puts pressure on the opponent to compensate for forced switch-ins and HP loss from Stealth Rock.

Metal Burst is also pivotal to Aggron's moveset because it can deal 1.5x the total damage that Aggron takes in a turn. If Aggron remains at low HP following Metal Burst, it can use Endeavor to reduce an opponent's HP to match its own. Normally, Aggron's Speed would prevent it from using Metal Burst and Endeavor before the opponent can launch two attacks. Aggron's item, however, covers Aggron's subpar Speed stat by granting its moves occasional priority.

Aggron's Ability and stats are mostly centered around its defenses to keep it on the Battlefield as long as possible. Sturdy, for example, prevents Aggron from being K.O.'d outright without occupying Aggron's item slot. Aggron also has an Impish Nature to maximize its strongest defensive stat, Defense, while lowering its weakest offensive stat, Special Attack. Aggron further facilitates its defenses through its EV distribution, placing 252 EVs into each of its best defensive stats. Since Special Defense is higher in value than Speed, Aggron's last four EVs remain in its Special Defense.

Aggron does not Dynamax for this set because the secondary effects of its moves would disappear until it returns to normal.
