I remember when Stakataka was first revealed, everyone thought it would be useless because the defensive title just wasn't much good. We were all mocking it from the start as another Aggron or Bastiodon with good stats but terrible typing. Then it came out, and its stats and movepool were so absurdly good that it became one of the best pokemon in several different types of meta.

We were pretty much on the money with Nihilego though. While its not to see a specially offensive rock type, being weak to both ground and psychic is a massive problem. Not to mention its appalling physical defence. It struggles to find its place as an offensive hazard setter. Even in a meta filled with these new fairy types like Lele and Koko. It struggled to find a place in 17. In 18 its supereffective stab made it threatening to a lot of real threats (Incineroar, Lando-T, Zard-Y) and it didn't care about intimidate. But is best chance to stand out is probably over now.

Still in singles, like all offensive ultra beasts, it stands as a potentially devastating sweeper. Personally, the only success i've really found for it in singles was to choice specs it and try to move its threats out of the way. Rock is a great offensive typing after all, and base 127 special attack is pretty dangerous. Plus with both thunderbolt and grass knot, bulky waters can hesitate to switch into it. Shame it didn't get Earth Power.

Remember when we all thought Lillie and Nihilego were the same being?

All nostalgia aside, Nihilego is my favorite Ultra Beast simply because of it's eloquent design and it's dex entries. Just think of all the medical applications that enhancement neurotoxin could have if prescribed with the proper dose.
