Time for the next Pokémon of the Week. This week, we have the final Pokémon in the Gen V Pokédex, to tie in with the Japanese release of the movie Extremespeed Genesect: Mewtwo Awakens

649.png

Genesect is a beast, and the special event one available from Saturday makes things even more brutal, so don't hesitate to include sets using Red Genesect's special moves! Just remember that all Red Genesect's moves are limited to it having the nature Hasty.

Never use Techno Blast/Douse Drive.

This robot bug used to be a monster in OU before its ban because of its deadly Rock Polish set and Download which could get itself a free sp attack boost and just kill anything not Heatran and Blissey.

Counters/Checks: Genesect is a tough one to hit because it constantly spams U-Turn here and there. Entry hazards cripple it down because of all the scouting it uses. Heatran stops it, assuming Genesect doesn't get the free sp attack boost and can Fire Blast it at it's own pace (Magma Storm could stop it too I guess but I don't think it works to well personally).

and lol at Lucario Fan yet again.

Genesect @ Lift Orb

-Extremespeed

-Thunder

U-Turn hits loads of things super effectively in Ubers. Darkrai, Mewtwo, Deoxys, Lati twins, and is excellent to troll Wobbuffet with. Extremespeed is useful priority, and it is interesting to note that you outrun all versions of Choice Band Rayquaza so you Extremespeed it before it extremespeeds you (if you're both in the red that could happen). If you predict that Rayquaza to do V-create or something go with Ice Beam. Ice Beam also hits Groudon and Giratina hard. Thunder is mainly there to deal with Kyogre. This set has problems with Ho-oh, Reshiram and Heatran, they take all these moves well with their bulk and destroy Genesect with their STAB fire moves.

I'm not really sure on EV's for this one, but should be at least enough speed to outrun Jolly Rayquaza and rest in attack and special attack.

Another option is Iron Head as it hits Tyranitar and Terrakion hard. It doesn't get any other coverage of note though in Ubers.

Oh Genesect.... One of the fastest bans ever, and one FAST scarfer. Genesect is a very good scouter (thanks to STAB U-turn), and it's ability Download gives it a boost to one of its attacking stats, encouraging a lot of switching. This allows it to go mixed.

Snake. Snake! SSSNNNNAAAAAAAAAAKKKKEEEEE!!!

SNAKE IS DEAD!

Gasp! Genesect killed Solid Snake! NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Anyway, Metal Gear Solid from Konami aside, when I saw this guy, I felt like Kojima gave Tajiri and Masuda the permission to promote the biggest Metal Gear Solid References ever! Hurrah! They officially broke pokemon bug type standards with Metal Gear Ray. Since GF cannot represent Metal Gear Ray like he should originally be, they had to sugarcoat the Metal Gear Ray and weaken its badass canyon to a 70 power move instead of a 250 powered nuclear laser cannon that can kill Arceus, and make his typing akin to Scizor for badass typing points.

Bug Pokemon. Once the weakest, dominated Unova in 15 month, War has changed.

For my Given set to Pokemon Metal Gear Genesect:

Nature: Timid
EVs: 252 Speed & Sp. Atk., 4 on HP
Item: Lum berry
-Ice Beam
-Flamethrower
-Bug Buzz
-Thunder

Special attacking is personally the kind of thing that closesly relates to how Metal Gear Ray fights in the Metal Gear Solid Series. Quite badass too if you ask my opinion. But this one's more of a wall breaking variant

If I were to give a proposal for Genesesct's nicknaming system, let's use Every Metal Gear Solid References that we could use. Seriously, Genesect is a Metal Gear in disguise. Ready to destroy the pokemon world. Only Snake, along with Fire type pokemon that he forced to catch, can stop it for good.

A monster from over 300 million years ago, this Pokémon was legendary for it's superior hunting skills. In the modern era, it was resurrected from a fossil and turned into a cyborg by Team Plasma. However, disapproved of by N, a single man took it on himself to finish it and demonstrate his genius.

He did a very good job then, as Genesect boasts a BST of 600, with high Attack and Special Attack stats, as well as the Porygon family's Download ability, allowing it to be an excellent mixed sweeper. In addition, it can learn a variety of moves to counter all sorts of threats. It's Speed, while disappointingly 1 point short of 100, is still very fast (and if it happens to be the event Red Genesect, even FASTER) and it's Defense/Special Defense stats aren''t too shonky either. And with it's Bug/Steel type, very few elements will be able to make it scream.

But there are two crippling flaws in Plasma's rejected superweapon: Fire types are it's Achilles Heel, and it's signature move is lacking. Techno Blast is outclassed by Flamethrower, Thunderbolt and Ice Beam in Power, PP and the fact that it's item slot isn't used up. The only use for Techno Blast is the Water type, as it is the only Water move Genesect can learn (even then it can potentially have Hidden Power).

Ability: Download - Powers up Attack/Special Attack depending on the enemy's weakest defense. This is perfect for Genesect as it compliments it's high offensive stats, cements it as a mixed sweeper, and tears down specialised walls like Blissey or Skarmory.

Genesect, Conquer And Destroy!!!
Nature: Hasty
Item: Choice Scarf/Douse Drive
- U-Turn
- Techno Blast/Thunderbolt/Flamethrower/Ice Beam
- Bug Buzz/Shift Gear
- Extremespeed

This set is primarily offensive, designed to hit hard and hit fast. Extremespeed allows it to strike quickly, while Techno Blast or the beams can counteract various threats. Shift Gear boosts Genesect's Speed and Attack simultaenously, while Bug Buzz puts Special Attack and STAB to good use. Finally, U-Turn enables it to switch out of a potential threat and deal STAB boosted pain upon it.

Fun fact: If you're so inclined to use a water type attack, Life Orb'ed Hidden Power Water is stronger than a Douse Drive'd Techno Blast, in addition to boosting your other attacks' power as well. Not only that but Techno Blast only has 8 PP max.

So basically, don't use Douse Drive or Techno Blast. It's not worth it.

For the record I am not promoting using HP Water, though

My god I miss it when Genesexy was OU. I guess I was a pissed by him constantly doing the same stupid thing all over again, but I won't deny that Iloved him :p
Although this is theory monning, I could see with the event coming out this could be a usable/possible set.

Genesect @ Life Orb / Expert Belt
Trait: Download
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 SAtk
Hasty Nature
- Shift Gear
- Iron Head
- Explosion / Flamethrower / Ice Beam
- Explosion / Flamethrower / Ice Beam

With a mere Shift Gear and Hasty Nature, Genesexy is able to hit a beastly 652 speed stats, enough to outspeed Jolly Excadril in Sand and +2 Jolly Rayquaza. Shift Gear is cool, I guess. Equipped with a layer of spikes and rocks while having snagged a Download Boost and Shift Gear, a Genesect's Iron Head has more than half the chance of OHKO Arceus-Ghost. Explosion hits the walls hard. lol. Flamethrower hits Ferro and Ice Beam hits dragon hard.

Also, you should be slapping yourself for you Techno Blast or Drives.

I've been following the POTW for years now, and these posts... Every set I've seen from you is either 1) unviable or 2) outclassed.

I remember a mod telling you to actually contribute by posting an explanation and EVs, instead of trying to get first post. I'm sorry, but I've actually seen people complain on PO about this. It's not going anywhere, and you should really revamp the way you post sets here, because it deters readers like me from taking this seriously :|

Douse Drive isn't viable. As someone mentioned, LO HP Water hits harder, and it doesn't hit anything noteworthy (Heatran in Rain, I guess?). Genesect currently has 2 sets it can utilize: The common Scarf set with the mandatory U-turn (hits Soul Dew Latis, Darkrai, and Mewtwo) and Ice Beam (hits mainly Rayquaza, uncommon Shaymin-S and Zekrom / Giratina), and options such as Thunder (Kyogre and uncommon Manaphy), Flamethrower (Ferrothorn, Forretress, and Excadrill) and Bug Buzz (harder hit on Darkrai and Mewtwo). There's also physical options with Iron Head and Explosion. Rock Polish is pretty underwhelming compared to its amazing usefulness in OU, so probably a Shift Gear set would suit it better. +2 Normal Gem Explosion destroys so much, it's unreal. It's essentially a nuke that comes close to OHKOing Forretress, iirc. It also has access to Espeed if you want to hit something before boosting.

Heatran was the universal counter in OU, but it's less uncommon in Ubers with the rain infested meta. Ghostceus is probably the best since it can CM up to withstand its attacks (it's also one of, if not, the best Arceus forme besides Ekiller). Bulky Mold Breaker Exca hits hard with EQ, and doesn't fear much (Flamethrower shouldn't 2HKO iirc; probably without the boost). If Heatran makes an appearance, it deals with it well (boosted Thunder does damage but won't KO). The thing is mostly U-turning so yeah, hazards are your friends.

OO has Dark Pulse to hit its best check, and Metal Sound scares things. There's also Choice Band if you want to try that.

~Cheers

Well, Genesect is a powerful Scarfer. U-turn lures Mewtwo and Darkrai. It also useful to steal momentum from opponents. It also gets STAB which is cool. Ice Beam weaken Groudon and other stuffs. Flamethrower gives better chances to kill Ferrothorn and Forretress. Thunder weaken stuffs like Kyogre, Palkia, Ho-oh and others. Y'all know how to use this powerul Scarfer.

Furret Master

Champion Seeker
Overview:
Simply put, Genesect is scary. It pretty much has everything it needs to destroy the opposing team, packing good stats (Base Stat Total=600) , moves, ability, and typing (Bug/Steel). The event Genesect has special move that break Genesect further. It's not uncounterable, but some might argue that it is darn close. In short, this this is a terror to fight and an invaluable ally.

Abilities:

Download: Boosts Genesect's Attack or Sp. Attack by one stage depending on which of the opponent's defensive stats is lower. No matter which boost you get (in almost every case), this makes Genesect even more of a nightmare to face.

Sets:

Special Scarfed
-U-Turn
-Bug Buzz
-Ice Beam
-Thunder/Flamethrower
Item: Life Orb
Ability: Download
Nature: Naive (+Speed, -Sp. Defense)/Hasty (+ Speed, -Defense)
EVs: 4 Attack, 252 Sp. Attack, 252 Speed

I list this non-event Genesect set partially because I can't say I'll get my hands on one with the two epic moves, so this set is for those of us that don't have Japanese games or know people who might be willing to part with one (not to say that no one could be generous). This is still a very powerful set, though. U-Turn gets Same-Type-Attack-Bonus and is great for scouting and still hitting quite hard. Bug Buzz also gets STAB but doesn't cause you to switch right away in case you want to stay in and slaughter. Ice Beam gets great coverage, especially in the Uber tier where Ice-weaknesses are not uncommon. The last move depends on if you have Kyogre or Groudon on your team. Kyogre's rain makes Thunder have perfect accuracy, while Groudon's sun boosts Flamethrower. In general, being paired with Kyogre is more valuable.

The nature choice is quite subtle, but either nature boosts Speed at the cost of a defensive stat. The EVs maximize Sp. Attack and Speed, while the leftover EVs go to Attack to boost U-Turn.

Other Options: Genesect has many good options available.
-A physically based Choice set (either Band or Scarf) can be destructive. Explosion and Iron Head are good moves for those sets.
-A Life Orb set is wonderful, as it boosts all of Genesect's attacks at the slight cost of HP every turn.
-An Expert Belt set can bluff a Choice set and get some surprise KOs.
-If you are one of the people who can get your hands on the event Genesect, Extremespeed and Shift Gear make for a very scary boosting set. As stated before, however, Hasty nature is your only option here, but thankfully, it's one of the two natures Genesect should have at all times.
-I could say that Techno Blast is an option, but since it basically learns moves that are much more powerful, it should not be used. Plus, an item that does more for you is always better if you can help it. Techno Blast is for novelty, not practicality.

Checks and Counters:
Um...I can't say anything effectively counters Genesect, especially since it can U-Turn out if you do find something. The best check would be something that is not weak to any of Genesect's moves and is very bulky. Defensive Ghost Arceus is about one of the few that does this, as well as Dialga and Steel Arceus. If Genesect is not running a Choice Scarf, faster things like Mewtwo have a shot at KOing Genesect. Entry hazards (excluding Toxic Spikes) also make it more difficult for Genesect to keep U-Turning out all the time. Finally, maybe you can get in a faster, sun-boosted, STAB Fire-type move, as that is Genesect's big weakness. Other than that, trying to take out Genesect is incredibly difficult.

Note: For anyone participating in the next Wi-Fi tournament, be prepared to face this thing. I'm going to guess that it will be fairly prevalent.

Genesect

So now we have the Uber-tier Scizor that looks a lot like Shockwave of the Decepticons. (Though I'd still use Scizor in the Uber-tier anyway.)

Genesect (can't name it yet, boo on Gamefreak)
Nature: Naive/Hasty
Moves: Bug Buzz
U-Turn
Flamethrower/Thunder/Techno Blast/Flash Cannon/Solar Beam
Flamethrower/Thunder/Techno Blast/Flash Cannon/Solar Beam
Item: Choice Scarf or a Drive of some kind
I'll leave the EVs to imagination.

Pretty straight forward, U-turn to scout, the rest destroys. Flamethrower/Solar Beam works well alongside a Groudon and with a non Flame Drive, Thunder works with Kyogre with a non Shock Drive. Flash Cannon is a secondary STAB if you're into that.

Douse Drive sucks.

Ability: Download

Can we change the rules to not allow seemingly random posts with no strategic viability or explanation?

Douse Drive sucks.

All Drives suck. Techno Blast with Burn, Shock, or Chill Drive are all outdamaged by Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, and Ice Beam, respectively, and Techno Blast has significantly less PP. Couple that with the fact that a Drive prevents you from using other items, and you'll find that Techno Blast will always suck no matter what Drive Genesect is holding.

Don't use Drives. Don't use Techno Blast.

DestroyerOfWorlds

Dragonlord Manslayer
...Why DOES Techno Blast exist? Three of its four variants are completely outclassed by one of Genesect's other moves, and the fourth is still weaker than Life Orb HP Water, since the Drives don't do anything other than change Techno Blast's type. Given that it's supposed to be the signature move of a very powerful Pokemon, it's incredibly underwhelming

A set to take advantage of the new event:

Genesect@ Life Orb / Expert Belt
Download
Hasty nature
Shift Gear
Iron Head/U-turn
Extremespeed/Explosion
Blaze Kick/Fire Blast/Thunder/Ice Beam
EVs: 220 Speed (or however much is needed to outrun 252+ base 95s), 252 Atk, 38 Sp. Atk

Pretty straightforward, really. The main objective here is to hit fast, hard, and in someplace new and exciting every time. Shift Gear is the obvious set up move, which is great on something that can force switches as easily as Genesect. Iron Head and U-turn are STAB options, with Iron Head trading coverage for keeping your Shift Gear boosts and having a nifty flinch rate, and U-turn sacrificing the blessings of Shift Gear to hit the many Bug-weak Ubers hard. U-turn is also a good move for switching away from Genesect's counters, and can be used to bluff a Choice set with the Expert Belt if your mechabug's shiny red coat hasn't given itself away yet. Extremespeed can be a nasty surprise for faster foes if you haven't set up yet, or priority users if you have, while Explosion is a powerful if risky (don't use if there are still Ghost-types around, duh) option to stop a particularly persistent counter at the cost of your murder-roach. The last slot is for coverage. Blaze Kick is boosted by Shift Gear, however, depending on which foes you feel most threatened by, it may be a better idea to rely on a more powerful (initially) Special attack, chosen to destroy what stands in your way the most.

All Drives suck. Techno Blast with Burn, Shock, or Chill Drive are all out damaged by Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, and Ice Beam, respectively, and Techno Blast has significantly less PP. Don't use Drives. Don't use Techno Blast.

So we can agree that it is not worth going with any Drives. It can kind of be compared to Scizor and Natural Gift+Certain Berry to get a water based attack when in fact its other moves with life orb can outclass it. In conclusion, Genesect is another Steel/Bug that should not really be fighting Fire types at all.

Download is a very iffy ability. If you run full physical, you have the chance of getting a Special Attack boost that is completely useless to you. The same goes for if you run fully Special set. Genesect needs to be mixed, so that you can make use of Download as you won't know what stat boost you will be getting.

It's in my Genes!
Genesect-a-saurus

Certain Moves to note:
Bolt Beam: The Classic Thunderbolt and Ice beam get good coverage, although if you run Genesect in the rain, you can use Thunder instead for harder hits.
STAB Physical: X-Scissor and U-Turn are only a 10 base power difference away from each other. Whereas X-scissor would be used during a sweep from Download Boosts, U-Turn allows you to switch out and do damage or lets you switch out on an opponent after they have substituted into another Pokemon. Iron head, although offerring low coverage gives you a high powered move after Download Boost (While the chance of flinching is also nice)
STAB Special ATTK: Bug Buzz and Flash Cannon both offer low coverage, but can do high damage. Bug Buzz can dent (or demolish?) Mewtwo and Darkrai, while Flash Cannon can get Kyurem and others.
Fly: Don't actually use Fly, it's just that I find it weird that it can learn this move like Golurk.
Flamethrower: If using this move, I am not sure if you want to pair it with Thunder, as Thunder will most likely be used in the rain. Use either Thunder or Flamethrower, unless you want to favour Thunder and have a low powered Flamethrower, or have a normal powered Flamethrower but a 70 accuracy Thunder.
Speed Boosters: If you run a mixed set (which you should run), then you may not want to be using Shift Gear. If you run full physical, then you could get the wrong Download Boost and put your ability to waste. Best case scenario is you get +2 ATTK from Download and Shift Gear, but that is if you want to play it risky. Shift Gear is great, but without it's access you can use Rock Polish as well, and bring its Speed up to surpass the speed of you foe. Of course you could replace Flamethrower with a low powered Nitro Charge. Doing damage while getting a boost of speed.

Items you may want to use (assuming it's a mixed set) are Choice Scarf if you stick to solely attacking moves, or otherwise use Life Orb.
