This week we go to our favourite lobster...no not Zoidberg...but Clawitzer

Wandering Battler
Based on one of the coolest animals in nature, the Pistol Shrimp, Clawitzer boasts all the power one would expect of an animal rightfully named after a gun. Base 120 Special Attack is a great start, but Clawitzer dials this up to 11 with Mega Launcher, giving what is effectively a free STAB boost on any appropriate move. Yet Clawitzer suffers from being all cannon and not much of anything else. While 71/88/89 defenses aren't bad, they aren't excellent either. Couple that with a paltry base 59 speed and Clawitzer is in the awkward position of being fast for Trick Room (since it is out slowed by both Ursaluna's, Torkoal, Kingambit, Amoongus, Dondozo... basically every Trick Room attacker) but slow out of it. Additionally Clawitzer's power is only impressive with Mega Launcher, more or less pigeon holing it into specific moves and making staples like the spread Muddy Water much less impressive than one would think from Clawitzer's reputation. While Mega Launcher Heal Pulse is admittedly absurd for the invariably bulky Trick Room teams, Clawitzer's utility otherwise lies entirely in the damage it can output, which is often not enough to stand out among the sea of other Water types.

This Clawitzer set acts akin to Turbo Ursaluna-Bloodmoon, investing fully in Speed and Special Attack to get the jump on unsuspecting opponents, especially in Tailwind. Water Pulse is the preferred STAB as after Mega Launcher is a reliable base 90 STAB attack, being slightly above rate in comparison to other reliable Water STABs which generally sit around base 80 power. All of this on top of threatening OHKOs on all but the most specially defensive Ursaluna, and Incineroar while completely washing away Volcarona and dealing good damage to neutral targets. Dragon Pulse is a great secondary attack, not only handling most Water resistant Dragon types like Dragapult, Dragonite, Hydreigon, Baxcalibur and Kommo-o, but as a strong neutral attack in general thanks to Mega Launcher. Aura Sphere is amazing coverage, hitting Archaludon, Tyranitar, Kingambit, as well as the aforementioned Incineroar and Ursaluna, giving Clawitzer to ways to threaten them and narrowing down "safe" Tera types. Dark Pulse rounds out the set, great for hitting Ghost and Tera Ghost types like Gholdengo, Indeedee, and Farigiraf.

As with Turbo Ursaluna, Max Speed and Special Attack are recommended. Even with Clawitzer's poor Speed, base 59 is just high enough that a fully invested Clawitzer can outrun most Incineroar as well as uninvested Rillaboom even before Tailwind, greatly increasing its threat level. While Modest is generally preferred for the extra damage it provides, Timid has its own merits, such as allowing Clawitzer to outrun Adamant Scarf Garchomp in Tailwind as well as outrun Annihilape with only 76 EVs in Speed. Life Orb is the recommended item for the power it provides while allowing one to make the most of Clawitzer's excellent coverage. This is preferred over Choice Specs as Clawitzer's unimpressive defenses make repeatedly pivoting in difficult. Tera Dragon is recommended for not only granting valuable resistances to Electric and Grass as well as maintain Clawitzer's valuable Water and Fire resistances, but also for the boost it grants to Dragon Pulse, making it much more spammable and more difficult to resist.

Preferred Partners:
Like Ursaluna Bloodmoon, this set thrives with Tailwind setters, allowing Clawitzer to exert much more offensive pressure. Whimsicott is an excellent partner thanks to its Prankster Fake Tears access, enabling brutal knock outs on neutral targets and often negating surprise Terastalizations to survive Clawitzer's assault. Pelipper is another excellent partner thanks to its Drizzle making Clawitzer's Water Pulse even deadlier while threatening Grass types with Hurricane. Kilowattrel is another solid Tailwind setter that threatens opposing Grass types.

Clawitzer is an interesting Pokémon. Unlike some of its fellow Crustaceans like Crawduant, Crabominable and Kingler it’s better on the special side and has great moves to take advantage of that and a fantastic ability to boost that further (but with only specific moves) but that does mean it is mainly limited to specific aura and pulse moves (at least until more moves are added) and without any other abilities it can become somewhat predictable. It is considered to be a counterpart with Dragalge (though in games with Megas it is at the time of writing less so given Dragalge has now got a mega ). Its speed is particularly bad without a speed boosting item or tailwind support, and its defences are decent but could be better. Pure water type also limits it somewhat (though slightly mitigated by Mega Launcher). Being a Pokémon with mega launcher but not a mega means it can do what it wants whether mega are in or not (which is useful). Being focused on Aura and Pulse moves it does also need to be aware of bulletproof which stops aura sphere. This is Pokémon is very much not a jack of trades and is more a master of one but it’s very good at that one and if future games were to add more aura and pulse moves to give it more variety it could hit new heights but for now it does what it does.

Mega Choice.
Ability- Mega Launcher- Great ability to boost certain moves but tends to limit its choices to primarily Aura and Pulse moves which already has limited options. Unfortunately, its only option but a good one.

Item- Choice specs/Choice Scarf- depending on if more power or speed needed.

Aura Sphere- Accurate Fighting coverage boosted by mega launcher
Dark Pulse/Flash Cannon/U-turn/Terrain Pulse- Dark Pulse is good coverage boosted by mega Launcher, Flash cannon- Useful for Fairy types but not boosted mega launcher, U-turn- good for scouting, Terrain Pulse- if a Terrain is active it can provide useful coverage (or if not weaker normal coverage) and is boosted by mega launcher

Other Options-

Life Orb- If a bit more flexibility is needed (as detailed above by others)

Assault Vest- Allows this Pokémon to stick around a lot longer against special foes but does limit it to offensive attacks which means it can’t use boosted Heal pulse and certain other status moves but not the biggest issue.

Heal Pulse- Can work in doubles if healing is needed (and is boosted by mega launcher). But probably better on life orb sets as locking into choice items can be less than ideal

Crabhammer- a decent Physical water option if needed but considering low attack power only useful in highly Niche circumstances where a special wall is the issue that it can’t get around but a physical move will do the job

Aqua jet- Seldom useful for it but it is a priority option to deal with a focus sash before a partner’s knock out attack.
