Taunt, then Stealth Rock. Heavy Slam, and Explosion as a last resort. Again, not that great, but... I'm like, new to competitive.

Steelix @ Leftovers/Muscle Band/Wide Lens/Smooth Rock
Trait: Sheer Force
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Def
Adamant (+Attack, -Sp. Attack)/Brave(+Attack, -Speed)/Impish (+Defense, -Sp. Attack)/Relaxed (+Defense, -Speed)
- Earthquake
- Iron Tail/Gyro Ball/Heavy Slam
- Thunder Fang/Ice Fang/Rock Slide
- Sandstorm/Rock Polish/Curse
Okay, so Earthquake is for STAB. Iron Tail, Gyro Ball, and Heavy Slam are also STAB. I have seen Iron Tail rarely used in other sets so far, despite the fact that Steelix is one big Iron Tail. I know it has bad accuracy, but that’s what I threw Wide Lens in to help a little. Gyro Ball is because Steelix is pretty slow, while Heavy Slam is because Steelix is really heavy. Thunder Fang and Ice Fang are for covering weaknesses, while Rock Slide is also in there for Sheer Force. Unfortunately, Sheer Force doesn’t get Earthquake because there’s no secondary effect, but it still gets Iron Tail, the Fangs, and Rock Slide. Sandstorm is for boosting Sp. Defense. Rock Polish is for increasing speed, and I would rather not decrease its weight so I can still use Heavy Slam, as you won’t be using Gyro Ball and Rock Polish on the same Steelix. Curse is for boosting Attack and Defense while lowering Speed, which isn’t really a bad thing. Sheer Force is a SUPER AWESOME ability that benefits basically any Pokemon that gets it. For nature, it depends on your preference. If you’d rather train for offense, go with Adamant or Brave, while for Defense, go with Impish or Relaxed. Brave and Relaxed help Gyro Ball and are not helped Rock Polish. As for items, Leftovers is just for small healing, Muscle Band is for boosting offense, Wide Lens is for helping with Iron Tail and Rock Slide, and Smooth Rock lengthens the duration of Sandstorm. I don’t use a Choice Band on Ground-types, as then they can’t affect a Flying-type or Pokemon with Levitate that switches in. It’s a shame that Steelix can’t have Iron Head and Sheer Force, because that would also be useful.

Uber physical wall Steelix:
Item: Leftovers or Muscle Band
EVs: 252 Defense, 252 HP, 4 S defense
(Could switch up HP and S defense, but it's your call)
-Earthquake
-Fire/Thunder fang
-Rock Slide
-Curse

Steelix has a crappy speed already, but can take hits to set up curse. Fire and Thunder fangs cover typing. Earthquake is sort of a must have, and Rock Slide deals with pesky fire types, like Charizard and Volcarona that want to ruin your fun with high special attack flamethrowers and heat waves.

EV's: 252 Hp, 252 Def, 252 Spd

~Stealth Rocks
~Rest
~Toxic
~Protect

With eviolite, onix gets massive defense, so there is no need to run EV's there, max HP plus max Spd means that it can take hits from both sides of the spectrum. Rest is it's only means of recovery, so it basically has to be included. Entry hazards are always nice, and you can set them up or toxic your opponents switch, depending on what pokes where in the team preview. Toxic is basically the only way for onix to inflict some signifigant damage, and protect works in conjunction with this, letting you scout your opponents moveset while stalling them out.

Seriously, Onix won't leave a scratch on anything with 45 base Attack. So, walling is way to go.
In Sandstorm, this Onix with Eviolite hits an awesome 274/537/463 (HP, Def, and SpD respectively) defensive stats. Dragon Tail shuffles your opponent's team and kill them slowly with entry hazards laid by your Pokemon.

Partner: Tyranitar / Hippowdon summons Sandstorm and set Stealth Rock up. Ferrothorn, Forretress, and Skarmory lays Spikes and covers Onix weakness.

I was looking around this thread and I wondered why no one was taking advantage of the new sturdy mechanic. This set gets decimated by entry hazard teams, or hail teams, but the tactic is simple: Switch into a super-effective attack, and sweep. Steel, ground, and electric have perfect coverage, so it can really mess up teams that don't have something to counter it. It would be better if Steelix had an attack-boosting move, but it doesn't even have Work Up.

Pretty basic set. Earthquake has STAB, Iron Tail has stab as well, but Gyro Ball can also be used due to low speed. Heavy slam can be used because of its weight. Thunder Fang is there for coverage. Explosion is your last resort.

A good partner for steelix is Tyranitar, or swampert. It can handle everything steelix can't.

Steelix (M) @ Air Balloon / Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef / 4 Spd
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Roar / Dragon Tail
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang / Stone Edge / Knock Down

This is pretty much the standard / best way to play a Steelix. The given EVs mean that he can beat defencive zapdos one on one (taking only 46-54% damage thus never 2HKOd whilst holding leftovers) whilst maximising his defencive Potential. With his massive defences he can make for a great Utility Pokémon, packing both Stealth Rocks and a phazing move of his choice.
Given his typing he'll mostly be used to switch in on things like Garchomp, Ice fang is always a 2HKO on non Yache Garchomp, the Air balloon can be used to ensure that Garchomp can't touch him. With an Air balloon he can also make quite an effective Excadrill check, if he switches into an swords dance or protect he can easily Earthquake it to oblivion or Phaze it out, depending on the variant it's up against. Ice fang can be foregone for Stone Edge or knock down to get the every lovely Quake Edge coverage. However, due to his lacking attack, Knock down is recommended so that he can instead nail things with STAB earthquake.

Venomous Snake

Steelix (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef / 4 Spd
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Toxic / Body Slam
- Dragon Tail / Roar
- Sleep Talk
- Rest

This Variant of Steelix is made to pass status through the opponent's team and can be really quite effective if used on a stall team that packs a lot of Entry Hazards and needs a Dragon / Status absorber. The idea is simple, bring him in on a Pokemon like Garchomp locked into Outrage, hit it with your status inflicter of choice, rest and then Phaze it out of play. Then rinse and repeat. The EVs here also mean that you can get passed the standard mixed Tyranitar / Specially Defencive Tyranitar one on one so long as it lacks life orb.
The EVs are again used for maximising his defencive potential. The moveset is fairly simple. Rest and Sleep talk are there for Longevity, Toxic is the aim of the set, however body slam can be used to get some occasional Parahax and then the phazing move is down to preference.
Also Rest + sturdy = winrar.

Curse

Steelix (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SDef
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Curse
- Gyro Ball
- Earthquake / Taunt
- Rest

This set aims to sweep / tank through the opposition via a Curse set. The Evs and Nature maximise his overall bulk. The set is fairly simple, switch in on Chansey / Blissey and start Spamming Curse until you're at a nice and high attacking level. You then rest off the damage and laugh at the pitiful damage being done to you as you rest, you then fire off STABed powered up Gyroballs at will. The next move is down to preference. Earthquake gives you an extra attacking option, whilst taunt stops you being Roared away.

Onix (M) @ Eviolite
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 Def / 252 SDef / 4 Spd
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Torment
- Toxic
- Substitute
- Protect

Onix can make a very potent torment user whilst holding the Eviolite item. The set is fairly simple again, switch in on anything that isn't a water / grass / ground type and hit a substitute, then nail the next switch in with a torment as it tries to break your sub, you then hit it with a toxic as it tries to nail you with a coverage move / switches out. Use protect on the next move and switch out to a pokemon that can take the next attack.
The lack of recovery / leftovers is very noticeable so it is best used on a team that has either a wish passer, Leech seed support or Ingrain Passing support... or all three.

Lead Onix

Onix (M) @ Eviolite
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 196 Def / 236 SDef / 76 Spd
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Taunt
- Stone Edge
- Roar / Dragon Tail / Earthquake / Explosion / rest

Onix has obscene defences in Little Cup and it also isn't all that slow either. Onix is pretty much the bulkiest lead that you'll find in Little cup and also has speed enough to out pace pokemon that rest on 13 speed or less. This means it can very quickly shut down ferroseed and some other slow utility leads and set up its own rocks. The move of choice here is Stone Edge, as it will hit lead Snove pretty hard and is his most powerful attack. The last option is down to what you want from it. With Roar you can come back later in game and Phaze set up sweepers away. Dragon Tail gets a special mention for being able to deal with Dratini much better, so long as Dratini lacks Surf. Earthquake is cool for coverage, though with Onix's pitiful attack stat, coverage isn't going to help much. Explosion means you can go out with a boom... however this is unadviseable as Explosion got nerfed and Onix won't be hitting very hard with base 45 Attack, anyway. Rest can be used for awesome tanking later in the game... Also Rest + Sturdy is win.

The Torment set from above can also be used here.

U mad, Bro?

Onix (M) @ Eviolite
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 196 Def / 236 SDef / 76 Spd
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Torment
- Toxic
- Substitute
- Protect

Partners for Onix
Hippopatas is the best Partner for Onix in LC, as it brings the sands to further bolster Onix's obscene defences. Ferroseed is a great partner, also, as it can destroy bulky waters for Onix and provide it the much needed Leech seed support. Hippopatas / Onix / Ferroseed will be pretty much unstoppable. Just watch out for Choice Scarf Vulpix.

Countering Onix
Totodile gets a special Mention for countering Onix, as it can set up Swords Dance in onix's face and start spamming Aqua jet. Basically any bulky Water / Grass (or not even bulky) will destroy Onix. Tentacool, Belsprout can both get passed the Torment set fairly easily, and can even get passed any other set if they can get passed Earthquake.

Partners for Steelix

Tentacruel
Tentacruel is arguably Steelix's best partner, as between them they can set up 2/3 of the Entry Hazards Required from a stall team. Not only that but Tentacruel removes a pokemon that threaten all Steel Types; Infernape. Aside from the combined ground weakness, they also resist each other's weaknesses quite well and can take hits for the other's weaker stat.

Slowbro
Slowbro is as good as tentacruel in partnership with Steelix, if not better, it just lacks Toxic Spikes Support. Slowbro can come in on any of Steelix's weaknesses very well and Steelix can do the same in return. Slowbro can also remove Ferrothorn, who will be tricky for any stall team to face and Ferrothorn can also set up all over Steelix.

Starmie
For more offencive teams, Starmie makes a great partner for Steelix. With the same typing as slowbro it resists all of Steelix's weak points and also has the added effect of being able to take out infernape like Tentacruel. It can also take out another one of steelix's biggest threat; Gliscor.

Bulky waters in general

Celebi
Though sharing a fire weakness, it can pass Leech Seeds / screens to Steelix to help it tank and also remove bulky waters that threaten Steelix.

Ferrothorn
Again sharing the fire weakness, however it can also pass Seeds to Steelix and set toxic spikes. Steelix / Ferrothorn / Tentacruel could also make a very nice Denfencive core with access to all the entry hazards and Leech Seeds to keep them all nice and lively.

Bulky Grassers In general

Countering Steelix

Heatran
The common Balloon set for Heatran ruins Steelix and can either OHKO it with Fire Blast or Earthpower, or force it out.

Infernape
Infernape can switch in on anything other than Earthquake and harrass it with any of its stab moves

Politoed / Ninetales
Both of them can use Steelix to set up their respected weathers and then OHKO with their weather boosted STAB moves.

Ferrothorn
Ferrothorn can use Steelix as Set up bait and smack away at the behemoth with Power Whips

Breloom
Can use Steelix as Set up bait.
Jellicent
Watching out for the rare Crunch, Jellicent can easily dispose of Steelix and cripple it with recover and Scald, it can also render Steelix pretty useless by Taunting it.

Rotom-W/H
Rotom-W is untouchable at the best of times, however it murders Steelix. Stab Hydro Pump / Stab Over Heat will destroy Steelix. The utility variants of any Rotom can also burn and eventually beat Steelix.

Gliscor
Even the most offencive of Steelix sets can't touch Gliscor, whilst Gliscor can set up on steelix and then proceed to sweep.

Lower Tiers
Moltres
Watching out For Stone Edge / Knock Down, Moltress can switch in pretty easily on Steelix and OHKO with STAB Fire Blast

Milotic
Steelix can't touch milotic, whilst milotic can smack away with it at STAB Scald / Surf and can rest off whatever damage Steelix might Inflict.

Tangrowth
Tangrowth can molest Steelix in any number of ways, be it set up Swords dance and proceed to destroy it, set up leech seeds to slowly conquer the behemoth or set up on it in anyway it wants

TL; DR Fire / Water / Grass Types

Other Options

Choice Band
A choice band set can be formulated to bolster its pitiful attack stat.

Passho / Occa / Shuca Berries
The Weakness berries can be used to help with certain pokemon. Passho means that Steelix might be able to stand a chance against Tentacruel, Occa means it might be able to come out on top over Non-balloon Heatran, and Shuca berry gives you a mistake margin for switching in on Garchomp.

Automize / Rock Polish
Could be useful if you can pass it some attack boosts. If not don't get your hopes up. It's slow as hell and won't be sweeping with unboosted base 80 atk (252/0 Gliscor takes 59% damage max from max Steelix. Not enough to 2HKO after Poison heal recovery)

Crunch
Crunch could be used for a little extra coverage. But Steelix won't be hitting anything hard enough for it to be useful anyway.

Torment
Steelix could run a torment set, however Onix does this better.

Magnet rise
Not a bad option if you don't want to be caught without Leftovers. This means Steelix will beat Excadrill 100% of the time and it gives it a much better chance of beating Gliscor.

Payback
Could be used on the Curse Set, however the lack of coverage with Gyro ball is very noticeable.

Screech
Screech can be used to help Onix get passed Gliscor, however you may as well just be running the curse set.

Onix @ Eviolite/Life Orb/Muscle Band/Expert Belt
Sheer Force
252 Atk/252 Spd/4 SDef
Jolly
- Rock Polish
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Thunder Fang
Baton Pass him in on a check, let the opponent laugh at you and send in their strongest Pokemon, use Rock Polish and "Sweep". Sheer Force so Rock Slide is stronger and more accurate than Stone Edge, Max Atk and Spd, so Atk boosts and Rock Polish are put to full effect. Earthquake and Rock Slide for STAB, Thunder Fang for coverage against Bulky Waters. Jolly because Onix needs to outspeed something. Onix over Steelix because of the speed on Onix that Steelix doesn't have. Eviolite can be used if you don't think you will survive the first hit without it. Life Orb for the boost of power, but recoil. Muscle Band for a little bit of extra damage. Expert Belt for again a little bit more power with no recoil, but only on Super Effective hits. Counters to this set would be any Swampert, Ferrothorn, Forretress, and Skarmory, as well as any thing that outspeeds it that can hit it with a special attack.

Onix doesn't get sheer force only steelix does... Onix instead has weak armor which can be usable on a eviolite onix in pre Evo corner.

Ability: Sheer Force
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 Atk 44 Spd 212 HP
Earthquake
Iron Tail/Rock Slide
Fire Fang/Ice Fang/Thunder Fang/Crunch/Iron Tail/Rock Slide
Autotomize

Earthquake has great coverage and STAB. Iron Tail is incredibly powerful STAB (after Sheer Force), but Steel is an awful offensive typing and has an unreliable accuracy. Rock Slide lets it hit Flying types hard and is boosted by Sheer Force, but is only as strong as Iron Tail, when super effective. The last option is completely choice oriented for coverage, with all moves getting Sheer Force boost. Autotomize is chosen over Rock Polish because it weakens Low Kick and Grass Knot. Finally, the EV spread lets it outrun Accelgor after 2 Autotomizes.

If we're going to keep doing completely useless Pokemon can we do luvdisc next week? Thanks!!!!!!

But seriously, Steelix is horrible. In standard OU it's setup for Skarm/Ferrothorn, hates taking hits from Tornados, Thunderos, TTar, Excadrill, Landorus, SubSDChomp, Latios...basically everything. It's really awful there and should never ever ever ever ever ever ever be used. Even if you're making a gimmick team, there are better options out there, such as Luvdisc, who's about as bad in the current meta, and funnier. (Actually come to think of it, Luvdisc is soft banned because it can't be used with DrizzleToed, ololol).

In BW UU Steelix fails even more horribly, if that's even possible. Nidoqueen, Heracross, Sun, Hail, Kyurem, Mismagius, Mew, Arcanine, etc all demolish or set up against it. I guess it could be used to bait bulky waters but even that doesn't work anymore cause of the Explosion nerf.

My advice: don't use steelix in competitive bw battling. I highly suggest that we write that on the potw analysis.

EDIT: I am ENRAGED at EpicEevee's post above. It is a mockery of the best Physical wall in the game. Its slow, yes, but does that mean anything? You think you can waltz on in here and say the best PhysWall in THE GAME is horrible? Are you MAD?

YES, Steelix, my favorite Steel. Always been one of my favorites, period... I'll add my little contribution for now.

Wall everything that uses Physical attacks
Ability: Sheer Force
Nature: Relaxed
Item: Air Balloon/Passho Berry/Occa Berry
EVs: 252 Def, 252 Atk, 4 HP

-Earthquake/Defence Curl
-Aqua Tail/Defence Curl
-Rock Slide/Defence Curl

Super Physical Walling. I'd say Steelix is the best at it. Only Shuckle takes less damage, and its HP is so low it doesn't matter. Anyway, wall like heck. Air Balloon if you fear Earthquake, the Berries if you fear Surf or a fire attack more. I'm not sure about the moves, though, I mean... The only move that he can learn that boosts defence is Defence Curl. I mean... When I saw that I was like "What..?" ...Its crazy. Its the only chance of hightening defence as I know. Its just... Crazy.

↑ So thats it right now. I'll check back later.

Adament Nature
Item Attached: Life Orb
Moves:
Iron Tail
Thunder Fang/Ice Fang/Fire Fang
Crunch
Thunder Fang/Ice Fang/Fire Fang
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 HP/ 252 Attack/ 4 Defense

So yeah, this is amazing. Which ever Fang you want. I like to use Ice Fang and Fire Fang, for coverage against different Pokemon. Crunch gets amazing boost from Sheer Force, and Iron Tail is, well, amazing. The fangs are good with Sheer Force, and Life Orb is like double Sheer Force, and Sheer Force keeps Life Orb from doing damage as long as you use a Sheer Force move!

@WeatherEffectRain: I believe that title goes to Lugia. But hey, Steelix would be a lot better of a wall if it had reliable recovery.
And better HP/SDef.
And better Atk.
And a better movepool.
And maybe a better secondary typing.
And a better ability wouldn't hurt.

The fact that you think steelix is the best physical wall in the game already means that I shouldn't take anything you say worth a grain of salt. Skarmory, Hippowdon, ****, even Quagsire is better. Cause they can actually counter common stuff at least.

Steelix is a horrible Pokemon in the current BW metagame. It can't take physical hits from any of the common physical sweepers, and it can't even switch in on resisted hits from the special behemoths in the meta right now.

And the set that you posted is a joke. You never ever ever ever ever should max defense on this thing. That's like maxing special defense on an OU Blissey -- absolutely useless. Also, you always concentrate on HP before defenses on anything that doesn't have an abnormally high base HP, so your EV spread is downright horrible.

tl;dr, you don't know what you're talking about at all. You've clearly never played competitive battling, or if you have, you're one of those guys with 1000> rating that's got a team of like, flareon/infernape/steelix/golbat/vileploom/salamence because they're your favorite pokes even though most of them suck balls in the current metagame.
