Hitmonchan (M) @ Choice Band ** Jackie
Jolly (-SAtk/+Spd): 252 ATK/ 252 Spd/ 6 HP
-Sky Uppercut
-Earthquake
-Rock Slide
-Hidden Power [Bug]

Venusaur (F) @ Leftovers ** Serenity
Calm (–Atk/+SDef): 252 HP/ 82 Def/ 176 SDef
-Synthesis
-Sleep Powder
-Leech Seed
-Razor Leaf

Flareon (F) @ Choice Band ** Cinnamon
Adamant (–SAtk/+Atk): 252 HP/ 252 Atk/ 6 Spd
-Overheat
-Shadow Ball
-Return
-Hidden Power (Fighting)

Starmie (N) @ Shell Bell ** Shuriken
Modest (–Atk/+SAtk): 252 SAtk/ 252 Speed/ 6 HP
-Surf
-Ice Beam
-Recover
-Thunderbolt

Skarmory (M) @ Leftovers ** Bladewing
Impish (-SAtk/+Def): 90 HP/ 90 Atk/ 252 Def/ 74 SDef
-Drill Peck
-Roar
-Spikes
-Rest

Medicham @ ?? (F) ** Lefty
Modest (-Atk/+Satk): 252 HP/ 152 SAtk/ 50 Def/ 50 Sdef/ 2 Spd
-Psychic
-Ice Punch
-Calm Mind
-Thunder Punch

So, as the title says I'm a [complete] newbie to this whole competitive play thing, and I'm not great with EVs or movesets. Most of these sets have been copied directly from a suggestion I've spotted somewhere else (or in the case of Hitmonchan, copied with one minor change). Medicham's the most original member of the team and I'm fairly certain that she's not worth her weight, but I guess that's why I'm putting this here.

So I'd appreciate all the normal team-help, but I also had a question about Hidden Power. Is there any way I can predict what Hidden Power type my Pokemon will get, or find out what its IVs are?

Thanks for all the help

Hitmonchan is fine, but it is compltely outclassed by its brother hitmonlee and other fighters such as heracross.

SB is an option over RL.

Flareon is fine.

Starmie likes timid and 336 speed in stat. Rest in hp.

I like this spread for skarm: 252 HP / 20 Atk / 212 Def / 24 Spd

Medicham@Choice Band
Adamant Nature
Evs: 36 HP / 252 Atk / 120 Spd (one I like)
-Focus Punch
-Hi Jump Kick
-Rock Slide
-Shadow Ball/Fake Out

Huge cb and dd mence weakness as skarms don't like fire blast if it has it as well as magneton+physical attacker weak.

I think you have to find its ivs out.

Ditch Hitmonchan for Snorlax. You need a reliable status absorber so go with the Restalk version. You may also want to ditch Flareon as Nu/UU's on an OU team isn't the best idea.

Fly is never used in today's metagame (or, so you'll understand, today :p)

Venusaur (F) @ Leftovers ** Serenity
Calm (–Atk/+SDef): 252 HP/ 82 Def/ 176 SDef
-Synthesis
-Sunny Day
-Leech Seed
-Razor Leaf
Sleep Powder's inreliable

Flareon (F) @ Choice Band ** Cinnamon
Adamant (–SAtk/+Atk): 252 HP/ 252 Atk/ 6 Spd

I have no experience with Flareon sets, sorry I can't help :(

Starmie (N) @ Shell Bell ** Shuriken
Modest (–Atk/+SAtk): 252 SAtk/ 252 Speed/ 6 HP
-Surf
-Ice Beam
-Recover
-Thunderbolt
Today a lot of people use spin (or, so you'll understand it, rapid spin), instead of ice Beam, to counter spikers (Pokemon that are standard to give the move spikes, like Skarmory)

Skarmory (M) @ Leftovers ** Bladewing
Impish (-SAtk/+Def): 90 HP/ 90 Atk/ 252 Def/ 74 SDef
-Drill Peck
-Roar
-Spikes
-Rest
Well, a spiker here. this is the kind of Skarmory a lot of people use, so they give starmie rapid spin

Medicham @ ?? (F) ** Lefty
Modest (-Atk/+Satk): 252 HP/ 152 SAtk/ 50 Def/ 50 Sdef/ 2 Spd
-Psychic
-Ice Punch
-Calm Mind
-Thunder Punch
hmm..dunno what to do with this. i guess it's good

to predict hidden power, you must use netbattle, which hopefully this team is for. for the IV's, you must have just gotten it (I think), and use an IV calculator, which can be found all over the web.

^Sleep Powder is one of the main reasons venusaur is used. Sunny Day sucks on venusaur.

That's what I say needs to be changed.

^Thunderpunch from his low special attack won't do squat, even to a min SDef gyarados. Rock Slide does the same thing but better.

AA is pointless when you have DP and roar is for phazing.

That medicham does not look good.

All in all, don't post here until you know how to rate.

No sp. wall so Raikou and Zappy can do a LOT of damage.

Would it help to focus my Venusaur's EVs completely on Sp. Def?

This isn't actually meant to be OU (or else I wouldn't bother with Hitmonchan or my bizarre Medicham), I just want to try to make a competitive team out of my favorite Pokemon (many of which just happen to be usable). I'll look into Snorlax though, thanks.

Thanks for answering my question, Guy. I've heard of netbattle, but don't know how to get it, can someone enlighten me?

Yeah, I know, but I was just trying to balance my attack strengths. I have no problems dumping Medicham, I just don't know what (if anything) would round out my other 5. I'd prefer not to drop them, but I'm trying to be open. Any suggestions on a Medicham replacement?

Thanks for all the help, sorry for the weird newbishness.

Download it here: http://www.tvsian.com/netbattle/

Ask your parents or someone you know who is good at computers to help you if you do not undertsand it or need help setting it up.

Go here: http://www.smogon.com/ if you want help as they have numerous guides and raters to help you with your teams. They also have an in-depth startegy analysis in their pokedex section. Here: http://pokerealm.net/ is also a great place to get extra help. Also, check out the stickies such as 0ma's ev guide in this board.

Medicham just needs a better moveset:

Medicham@Choice Band
Adamant Nature
Evs: Max attack/speed at least to beat max neutrals 70's/rest in hp
-Focus Punch
-Hi Jump Kick
-Rock Slide
-Shadow Ball/Fake Out

Not to be picky or anything, but if your team consists of at least one OU pokemon, it naturally becomes a OU team. And Hitmonchan is just very outcompeted in that metagame. Replace it with a beefy pokemon that can take specal hits, as that seems to be what your team is lacking as of now.

And go with Tazzler's Medicham set.

Focusing Sdef evs on Venusaur won't be enough to solve your lack of a sp. wall seeing as how Zapdos and Raikou might carry HP Ice once in a while.

I'd much rather go with something that has high Sp. Def already with a nice amount of HP like Snorlax/Regice/Blissey. Best to have a healing move on them too. Don't ask me for EV spreads, I'm not good with them.

will the two retards please stop ****ing rating, it's getting annoying

and also focusing SDef on Venusaur, isn't bad as long as you have something that can easily take physical hits, horever trying to balance out both of Venusaur's defences usually works best

Any better?

Okay, so I've definately decided I want to switch in a Snorlax, but I don't know what moveset to use. I think I'll drop Medicham for it, though, since I like Hitmonchan better and because its relevant base stats are all superior. Okay so here's what I've got at this point:

Hitmonchan (M) @ Choice Band ** Jackie
Jolly (-SAtk/+Spd): 252 ATK/ 252 Spd/ 6 HP
-Brick Break
-Earthquake
-Rock Slide
-Hidden Power [Bug]

Venusaur (F) @ Leftovers ** Serenity
Calm (–Atk/+SDef): 252 HP/ 82 Def/ 176 SDef
-Synthesis
-Sleep Powder
-Leech Seed
-Razor Leaf

Flareon (F) @ Choice Band ** Cinnamon
Adamant (–SAtk/+Atk): 252 HP/ 252 Atk/ 6 Spd
-Overheat
-Shadow Ball
-Return
-Hidden Power (Fighting)

Starmie (N) @ Shell Bell ** Shuriken
Timid (–Atk/+Spd): 252 SAtk/ 252 Speed/ 6 HP
-Surf
-Ice Beam (I feel I should probably hang onto this for the seemingly popular dragons I don't have another great way of dealing with)
-Recover
-Thunderbolt

Skarmory (M) @ Leftovers ** Bladewing
Impish (-SAtk/+Def): 252 HP / 20 Atk / 212 Def / 24 Spd
-Drill Peck
-Roar
-Spikes
-Rest

Snorlax (F) @ Leftovers ** Lazy Susan
Sassy (-Spd/+SDef): 202 HP / 140 Atk / 168 SDef
-Rest
-Sleep Talk
-Earthquake
-Body Slam

So now I have Skarmory on Defence, Snorlax on Special Defence and Venusaur as an intermediate wall/annoyer. Will that be enough to cover defences?

BTW, the reason I had Medicham with the weird moveset is because I thought I had too many physical attackers, do you guys think that will be a problem (since Snorlax is also physical)?

Thanks again for all the help.

Double-edge is usually the normal move for Stalkinglaxen.
