Concerning Poke Balls...

Can Pokeballs capture anything but Pokemon?

  • That's silly! Pokemon are special and nothing else would work.

This has been driving me crazy for ages, so I figured I'd make a thread on it.

There seems to be a lot of mixed opinions on Pokeballs. For example, (I have NO idea where this came from, but SO many people believe it when it makes no sense whatsoever), it seems to be a common belief that it would be possible for some sort of Pokeball variant to be made that could capture humans.

It's obvious that Pokemon can be easily changed into energy, but how on earth could it work for anything else??!

In the D/P anime, Hikari throws a Pokeball at Ash accidentally. He just gets a sore face. xP

Nothing else can go in a Pokeball either. When Mankey throws the rice ball at Ash's thrown Pokeball, it goes inside, but doesn't get turned into energy.

But, hey, I'd like to see your opinions on the subject.

Note: If you pick the last poll option, I will personally feed you to a grizzly bear. >8/

Btw, I felt this was more of a discussion, even though I decided to add the poll at the last second. I dunno, if a mod feels it really belongs in Pokepolls they can move it.

Haha! I like to joke about this...I've always wondered...what if someone threw a Poke'ball at...say...Charmeleon, and it missed and hit the ground, then suddenly it opened up and the entire world was sucked into the Poke'ball...hehe

Yeah, I think it could happen; If they configured it right, it could capture a human. I mean, pokeballs are used to hold items (game) AND pokemon, which are carbon based life-forms, well, most of em are, and so are humans, so theres nothing stopping it from happening.
I'm guessing that they wouldn't do it though, because if someone was captured in a pokeball, they could be kidnapped or something. So it probably has safety precautions on it to stop people getting caught; But it would be possible, in the Pokeworld ^^

Bring on your grizzly bear, then. Because this is overthinking the issue.

(Side note: If I were forced to say, then I'd say that whatever technology employed in Pokeballs is keyed into the Pokemon species themselves, and thus will only work on them. If they're all considered 'Pokemon,' then they've got to have some type of common thread of DNA, right? So the ball will only activate when it detects that thread)

I'm sure there is a logical reason why it works, but I'm to lazy to find it out myself.

In one episode I remember Ash tried to capture mankey and ended up catching a rice ball in the pokeball...hehehe

To stop this theory, Magemite line and the porygon line aren't really, whats the word... Natural creatures? So technically, that theory doesn't work; unless they have some kind of programing in them; but then, Magnemite IS a living thing, aargh, I'm confused...

Hence the 'overthinking' comment. It's a game, let it go.

Though Porygon is an event only Pokemon, so it's probably keyed into the PokeBall, and Magnemite... I'd say an argument would be made for it's 'natural creature' state, since it's caught in the wild...

Yeh, I have a similar theory, although mine is that is senses the 'Pokemon' energy, and it only activates when sensing that.

Yeah, that's why I mentioned it. xD

Well all Pokemon do have some sort of special energy about them, right? They're all definately alive, but for the ones with an...unorthodox body structure...it's have to based on energy or something. =/

I write fanfics. It's not just a game--bringing logic to every aspect of the Pokemon world is what fic writers do. =/

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN
Using a more "realistic" approach for this, i've always assumed that they're like a magical talisman, used to bind demons/spirits.
I think I might have said this in another thread, but Game Freak just turned magic into "science" in order to appeal to the masses- after all, Pokemon is pretty much just a Fantasy story... not unlike Fullmetal Alchemist or Final Fantasy.

It doesn't work, Jessie threw a ball after a ghost pokémon in the Ghastly/Haunter/Gengar episode where Ash dies. It misses and hits James in the head.
If it DID work, then James would've been caught, but it just hit him in the head.

Jessie caught James! James will be added to the Pokédex.
"It is thaught that James is a bad guy, but deep inside, this Pokémon
seeks for approval by it's pack."

I'd be interested to see how that Ghost/Electric "PLasma" type pokemon would go into a pokeball

its energy already, so it going into a pokeball could make it go all wierd 8)

TBH, I think they just design the game and anime around whatever they need to do. I don't think it's a set rule whether a Pokéball can capture other things, I think that they just let the balls do whatever they need to, e.g. in the anime sometimes they capture non living things as a sort of joke, but other times they don't.

And I think i'm over thinking this way too much, and making no sense whatsoever.

No, in many episodes, pokeballs are shown knocking off wood, people, et cetera and none of them get captured.

Another theory...maybe pokemons are caught depending on how a pokeball is thrown, maybe throwing pokeball is a trainer's skill that they must make the button of the ball hit the pokemon and if it misses it won't capture anything unless it hits the button...I don't really understand how a pokeball works T_T
just ask the person making pokeballs in GSC version...hehehe

Mmm...that's true...maybe it is energy, but just not the solid form that other Pokemon are. And when it gets hit, it gets turned into the useable energy that can be shrunk into the ball.
