Cool, but not common

I'm currently writing a FanFic titled, "And as the Wind Blows: Epidemic in Hoenn" (the link is in my siggy). I'm early in the story and have a good idea of where I want to go and who I want to use as characters. But I've just got a question of audience (reader) preference.

I'm going to use several "not-so-popular" characters from the anime. It takes place from Hoenn, so try to refrain from mentioning Hoenn Gym Leaders. I've already put them in consideration.

The story is a Thriller/Adventure, but I don't have a preference on what kind of character I use.

Does anybody have cool characters that they liked from the anime or manga series that they think would be cool for my story?

I did my "research," and possible characters include:
Alexander aka "Wings" - a rescuer type of hero character. He has a Noctowl.
Gary Oak - Of course
Ritchie - I think he showed up once on Victory Road. Helped Ash out. Owns a Pikachu named Sparky.
Todd aka "Snap" - he's a photographer
Butch and Cassidy - Team Rocket members that don't suck like Jessie and James
Giovanni, Jesse, James, Meowth, and Team Rocket - of course
All the major Anime Characters
Professor Cosmo - A geologist near Lavaridge, expert on meteorites

Heh, you're doing the same as me. My fic's about Mikey (the youngest Eevee brother) and has many minor Kanto (and a few from other regions) characters. However I got almost no suggestions so hopefully you do better.

Anyways, if it's in Hoenn then most suggestions you want should be from there, correct? I don't know much about Hoenn so can't really suggest from there. But perhaps choose minor characters that have Pokemon that aren't overused.

True, true. I created Dr. Juniper myself. There is a Dr. Proctor though, I think he's from Kanto. He's not a pokemon doctor, but a human doctor from a hospital. Sleeps a lot. Slept on the job. Other than that, not much.

For me, Ritchie = awesome. ^^ my favorite side character by far. o.o I like Giovanni though, but I can't say the same for Jessie, James, and Meowth. After them being on the show so long with that stupid motto, I get tired of them easily.

Dunno if he counts as a "not so popular" character but I always liked the Phantom Co-ordinator. I'd like to see someone write a fic with him in it.

I was going to say Harrison or Jimmy the wanna-be referee, but I already had enough of them from my fic. XD

I think you should have Sakura and maybe the Pokemon Ranger (Not the spinny disk kind) from Beg, Burrow and Steal. Also Hanzou from the Togetic episodes and Silver from the Moltres Chronicle
