Cool Sprite Collection Fakedex

Thank you Minteh! I really appreciate it. :) I started out making pixel art avatars on deviantart but they were no where near this good and very very basic in design. I've been working on my shading techniques but I have a long way to go to make them look authentic!

Your DeviantArt gallery is very impressive for a beginner, although the sprites do have obvious flaws. Before I adress those, I'd like to suggest you actually put your sprites (instead of a link, though you can still keep the link as well if you wish) in your first post. This makes giving C&C a lot easier since we wouldn't have to switch through pages all the time.

If you don't know how (considering you're pretty new), copy this into your first post, minus the *.

The biggest flaw I can see is that they are a bit robotic in their shape and shading i.e. straight lines, symmetrical shapes and I feel like you should bring them alive a little more by giving them more interesting poses and shading. As a rule of thumb they should never look straight into the face of the viewer, that's just so 1990's. It will be a pain to redo them all though so you could just leave them as they are and work on this in the future.

I'd have liked to discuss them all individually, but it's basically the same thing over and over again: good idea, decent scratch work, bad pose, too symmetrical, mediocre shading. On your shading I can also say that you should pick your colors more carefully, on number 3 the difference betwene the middle shade and the darkest shade is way too big (the shading on the legs looks a big blur of outline) and on others the shading is barely noticeable (21 - 23 e.g.)

The designs are all pretty good though, you seem to have some interesting ideas so I really think you have potential. Are these really your firsts?
I'd also like to welcome you to our spriting community.

Yeah they're my first sprite versions of Pokemon. I've been coming up with ideas for designs for a long time but I guess I didn't give the poses much thought.

Thanks for the the C&C. I may go back and edit some of them.

To expand on what Bert said, they shouldn't be profile either, for example Blujee and your dolphin line. Remember to add black in your outlines too, many of them are missing it and they appear way too bright, like Perfuchsia. You have some really good ideas here, with a little more practise and experience you could become a great spriter.

Alright, I'll see how I can edit some of them. Thanks for the suggestions.

Millarc3005 said he would help me out with some of these so we'll see what happens. :)

Bulletproof

Self explanatory.
Oh my god. Woolorm is like cutest thing ever. All it need are some knit socks & Its good to go.

These sprites are really great especially for a first. I like your use of color, keep it up. Though I thing less Pokemon should be facing directly forward.

I really like them! There are some really great ideas here. I especially like that Volcrus
Thanks! ^_^ I'm thinking of letting that be a non-starter pokemon though since it looks more like a water/fire type than just fire by itself.

Hehe.. thank you woolybears are one of my favorite insects!

And yes, Millarc is helping me by respriting the ones that aren't facing properly. ^_^

Also, he's doing the back sprites. So he deserves a big chunk of credit for that.

Alright, I've decided to make a truly complete fakedex so I've added a bunch more and replaced a couple and moved other around.

I'd REALLY appreciate some C&C especially on the newer ones I've made. I feel like they're a bit better quality than the last ones.

Born a legend!
Yes they are much better quality and I don't think the need revamped. WELL DONE!!!

Sorry for the awfully short reply, but could you point out which are new? It's kind of demotivating to have to compare the entire two lists (no offense, the fact alone that you got a dex complete is amazing!) so I'd rather just have you tell the numbers you'd like C&C on most, that way I can go in-depth :).

Very cool!!
Thank you! ^_^

New: 006, 007, 008, 062, 063, 076, 077, 103-116, 119, 120, 121, 123-143, 145

Critique the ones you think need the most help out of those new ones I just listed. Personally I think that 063 and 103 are my best. I'm not sure which ones are the worst. I've been told that 141 and 142 don't really look like sea snails. They're based on limpets and xenophora.

Also thanks! It was definitely a creative workout coming up with all those pokemon, though I did get help with a few like froglure and mesolith.

From what I've seen, you've quite a dex going for you. What I would like to say, as has been mentioned, the profile look doesn't really work, HOWEVER, there are three exceptional sprites in here that just work really well. The three in question are Woolorm, Skeledon, and Steellion. Woolorm is by far the BEST sprite in your whole fakedex. The shading, the pose; Everything about it is great EXCEPT for it's feet. In all honesty, get rid of the feet, and it will be the best fakemon in your dex. Skeledon shows how it's not facing straight on, and that's what you should try to do with all your sprites. They are all very heavily dithered, and for some sprites, that's not such a good thing. And some sprites also have no anti-aliasing what-so-ever in their outline. And some anti-aliasing make it look like some parts aren't actually attached to your fakemon (Volcrus). You don't need to have some much dithering in them because two of my favourites actually have very little to no dithering in them. I guess that's all I have to add to the critique. Keep up the good work.

As mentioned, Millarc is reposing some for me so I'm sure he'll make them look great.

Eh, some people like the dithering but I don't know what anti-aliasing is.

Thanks again!

6, 7 and 8 have too much half-tone shading (=tethering? idk) which makes them look a little bit weird. I recall a tutorial on half-tone shading in the sticky, maybe you should look it up. The pose is definitely better than in your earlier works though.

62 and 63 are two of your better ones, I like the designs and especially the bright colors. The shading should probably a little bit more obvious though (increasing the contrast of the shades could help) and I think the legs on 63 aren't detailed enough. Speaking of this, this type of leg occurs a lot on your sprites and it just doesn't cut it imo. It's too straight, undetailed, etc... almost like they're fake, wooden legs and a lot of your sprites have this problem.

76-77 are combinations of aforementioned problems: too much half-tone shading and straight lines/shading. The pose is nice and they show some potential but you have to make them more vivid, more alive, less geometrical.

103-116 are all pretty good, some are still a bit robotic looking, but the designs are okay, the shading is passable and generally with a few touch-ups and some more practice under your belt these would look really nice. I really like the big elephant, which is a really good job (except for - again - the straight legs, pelase fix that :().

119-121 are worse, especially 121 looks flat and like a beginner's job. Sorry, not a fan of these.

123-143 are a mixed bag: some are really good (the steel horse is awesome!), most are decent and some suffer from straight-legs (I'm sure you can see which ones I mean by now).

145 is one of your best imo. Good, yet simple, design with nice shading and none of the problems your other sprites have. The eyes should be a little bit more 'expressed imo' since I believe eyes are key in defining a sprite's identity and yours is kind of trying not to show its eyes. Still, I really like it.

One I also really liked, but wasn't on the 'new' list is 133. Pretty much superb shading there, on a really cool design and I'm pretty impressed by how you scratched the abs, they're very well done.

Didn't have much time so I only adressed the biggest problems, sorry for not going in-depth. General thing I'd like you to do: please learn the difference between straight lines and leg curves :p.
