couples in fanfiction

Pokemon/Pokemon couples to be exact.

How do couples in stories work? I never actually got to add two Pokemon who are in love with each other in the story (except for maybe Hydreigon and her obsession with Haxorus taking her places) because I didn't know how to make it work other then making one chase the other.

How can I get one to make sense is my bigger question. I'm working with Dialga and Palkia as one, however due to their fight, I don't think that readers would think it'd make sense at all. How can I go in a way that it makes sense?

So because Dialga and Palkia fought, that means they can't be a couple?

Welcome to every relationship know to man! Fights break out all the time yet people remain together as a couple because they work through their differences to resolve the issue.

Read pretty much any shipping fic and you can see how the writer handles a coupling (seeing as the goal of shipping fics is to pair two characters, this is the most sensible place to start) If you didn't know, Serebii houses Shipping Fics in the shipping section and not in the Fan Fiction section.

There are many ways of portraying a relationship:

-A likes B, A asks B on a date.
-A likes B, A agonises over how B would never go out with them only to discover that B secretly liked them all along and all of this drama would have been done with if only A had the testicular fortitude to ask.
-A likes B, B likes C, A hates C, B goes out with C, C hurts B, B realises that A was their true love after all.
-A likes B, B likes C, A likes C, cue threesome.
-Then the classic, A likes B, B likes A, but they dodge the issue and let the sexual tension thicken until it explodes.

There are lots of ways of doing it, just look at your own life, how people enter and end relationships, in the media, watch any RomCom to see the trials and tribulations of dating in all manners of situations.

Properly researched, it shouldn't be hard to find the information you want.

I know two people can fight and make up however have you seen the fight between Dialga and Palkia? Here: http://youtu.be/Wtoc2R41jqc?t=2m30s

their fight almost caused time and space to collapse into nothingness. Unless there was a round about way of making this scene and my idea work, my readers will look at me funny (as if they already werent for having Dialga be cute)

I asked because I wanted to either redo the Dialga and the Reverse World master story; same plot but different events, or hold off on that story and do one that formally introduces the two characters and their background stories before having them appear out of nowhere in another fic.

That's anime canon, in game canon, I got the idea that they get along pretty well. They don't have any beef anyway, they'd be all like, "What's this Cyrus chump up to? Let's vaporise him!"

Even if you were writing anime canon, you could still disregard the fight or set it in a time before the fight. You don't always have to follow the rules of canon, if you want to write a Dialga/Palkia fic then by all means write it. Don't let potential readers and their potential gripes put you off.

@Silver: God, please don't tell me that you're planning to turn that good fight into a sappy lover's quarrel. Why do you have to anthropomorphise everything. It often doesn't do justice to the original source material. :/

And on topic, listen to Diddy. He has the right idea.

No I wasn't. What I wanted to do was use the same 'Dialga and Palkia get mad because they think the other doesnt know personal space when it comes to dimensions, they fight'. However one snapping out of it sooner or later because of their love for the other. :p

Really and truly
Just something to think about based on what you've said:

-Not all couples are in love or even love each other. Not realistically, anyway. Some couples may start off that way, but sometimes the spark or the passion dies out after some time.

-Pokémon couples might not be the same as human couples unless you are anthropomorphizing them completely. The same way human relationships and animal relationships aren't the same, Pokémon and people aren't the same and might not have the same views or rituals on mating/romance as humans do. Some animals have mates for life, but then you also have cases where mating = male's head gets ripped off. Dialga and Palkia seem to act like raging beasts in canon, not like two civilized people in an argument, so that's something to take into account when thinking about how their relationship might be. Unless you do disregard canon completely. :p

-"They love each other so they'll stop fighting" won't necessarily work. Sometimes it can, but it's not an automatic solution. A married couple might struggle to stop fighting, just because it might be in their personality to fight.

I once did a romance fic between a Manectric and Delcatty (which DM might remember o_o). Looking back on it, it was cute, but the characters acted more like Romeo and Juliet than a trained cat-creature and wild canine-creature. It might not have ruined the fic, but it likely made it a lot more cheesy because the fact that they were two Pokémon didn't really affect the situation or make it any more/less interesting than if they were two humans. I think it becomes more interesting when you really take the species into consideration, but that might just be me.
