Defending the Homeland! (872)

Joltik-Kid

Careful? Where's the fun in that?
And it's a damn shame too. I really liked Hawlucha. :(
If your name isn't Snorlax or by extent Heracross, you don't deserve to be treated nice I guess. Actually took both of those guys some time too, Snorlax had to wait till late Johto, while Heracross has some sketchy battling streaks, beat Magmar, loses to Venasuar

Petal Blizzard and Grassy Terrain. Nice to see some new moves here, although Goodra's Ice Beam seems like an odd choice. I suppose it won't matter since the gooball will be leaving anyway.

When Ash was trying to encourage Goodra, I really cringed at the drop of the animation quality and the lack of effort for a scene that's supposed to be important. But at least we got to see more Yanmega which is nice. Hopefully Jessie will make a reference to her old pal. Speaking of Jessie, Team Rocket seems a bit... off. It's been a while since they have had actual story relevance. Hopefully the next episode will give them more reasons for continued existence.

Almighty Zard

He has returned.
Ash's Goodra despite leaving gets a move instead of Hawlucha who is going to be a main stay... well I think it's official who the goat of Ash's team is

don't even start, cause then I will think of Torkoal and that WON'T be pleasant.

Can some explain why the war is going down in the first place, I don't get it from the pics alone.

Ice beam seems kinda random to me.

The episode was alright. Some scenes definitely felt stiff, but hopefully they are saving up to make the next episode better. I'm gonna really miss Goodra. Ash not interfering in the episode still felt a little OOC for me tbh..

Let's go to the beach, each.
Goodra learning Ice Beam surprised me; what's the point? Him getting ambushed made me scream though, and the Wooper was adorable, as were those Lotad.

Mal's Review:

Pros:

* Pokelunch scene intro

* Vietnam carpet bombing flashback

* Horn of Gondor Goodra

* Damn, TR sucker sniping the Barney

* Cliffhanger kidnapping

Neutrals:

* Battle in the Wetlands was okay.

* 1 v 1 duel felt underwhelming, especially of all moves, it's hohoho ICE BEAM that's the finisher...not exactly hype

Cons:

* Ugh, did they spend all the budget in the gyms and Mega Evolution specials? The animation was quite subpar. This two-parter is the resolution of the most intriguing subplots for a Pokemon. We could have the pond dwellers living in hiding, and Barney leading and rallying them in an epic battle over the wetlands against Florges & the Bugs. Rather dull environment and lack of dynamic motion and reused animations.

* Of course, TR has to meddle in these affairs. It seems Florges might in fact be terrorizing the pond dwellers for the little one. Once again, a case of misunderstood Pokemon.

I think TR were actually pretty good in this episode. They weren't joking around like they normally do and they were actually allowing their plans to be set in motion. They honestly felt threatening.

And I think Goodra learned Ice Beam because the writers think Florges is a Grass-type. I mean they made it know Petal Blizzard and Grassy Terrain.

Florges really should have been Fairy/Grass, but oh well.

Goodra was really good this episode, and that sneak attack made me mad. Just the fact that we have another "misunderstood" Pokémon is annoying when it behaved like a total shower bag. Luxray not eating with the next was a riot. It is Clemont's Palpitoad indeed.

No need to worry!
This episode was good, really shows that the writers are truly trying with the XY series. Goodra really showed itself nicely in this episode...and it was nice seeing it reunite with its friends such as the Wooper in particular. The army of Bugs and Florges vs Goodra and friends was an okay battle, but it was nice to see and Goodra's moments with its friends were really nice to see. Kenzo seems kind of, you know, irrelevant in this episode but eh. The cliffhanger leaves the next episode kind of interesting. And wow, Team Rocket is at it again, those annoying brats have to be behind everything evil. So really Florges and its army wasn't evil, but it was forced into this by TR. TR is behind everything with this Goomy...

Oh well, on to the next one. (And at least as of XY070's preview, it seems Goodra can fly! Wow!) *ends sarcasm*

I appreciate Florges being used as an antagonist.

Goodra was cool as ever , but i'm ready for next week to be ovet with. I don't care for pokemon that is not going to help as a main cast. Wasted episodes and ppls time

An unexpectedly dark episode especially when we learn of the true dimensions of this conflict. Ah, Team Rocket sometimes you are a mere thorn in my side but here your villainy takes on a whole 'nother level. The vast and empty wetlands and the sounds of war between the Pokemon, as well as the humans staying back to let the Pokemon deal with the conflict themselves makes the tension feel palpable, and indeed Ash felt it. I guess, here, Ash realizes that Goodra has something that it needs to protect. However, Goodra is not the only one that has something to protect. As we can see Florges has an ill Floette with her.

I don't understand florges motive though for attacking the swamp though. How will that help floette?

Frogadier and Luxray were the only two missing from eating at the opening scene! This is so shocking, considering Frogadier is a starter pokemon!!

I feel for them; they must've starved. Seriously though, did the animation budget get cut here? The animation looked so sloppy in some scenes.

It's not like the animation has always been perfect in XY, there are always sloppy instances here and there. Don't start comparing every future episode to Ash VS Clemont and sweating when they don't look the same people. And I think this ep still had some cool artistic stuff like the shaking camera on the close up of Florges.

Ash's Goodra despite leaving gets a move instead of Hawlucha who is going to be a main stay... well I think it's official who the goat of Ash's team is
Hello? Luchabro's been in 3 Gym battles and gotten a win on 2 of them. Goodra learned a move because it couldn't touch Florges with anything other than Bide and I guess the writers didn't wanna depend on that move yet again. Hawlucha's doing fine with its 3 moves, and it has plenty of time to get another one in the future.

This episode summarizes XY the series as a whole:

Tons of storyline potential, but mediocre to decent execution.
Yeah, but I think that the biggest problem in this episode was not the writing but the crap animation which made the battle lose the epic feeling which the episode was supposed to be mainly focused on.

But I thought that the writing was okay over all but I think that that the next episode is more important and we should wait for how that one goes before completely judging this episode.

But yeah if Florges turns out that it aint actually evil then this whole arc is a waste and is kinda crap tbh since I'm sick of TR causing all the problems.
