Dell Inspiron won't let me restore to factory settings

My laptop has a virus. It won't let me restore to factory settings or connect to the Internet. I'm not sure if I have a disc to do it manually. Is there some kind of code for it?

When I got my PC, it came with some sort of recovery partition separate from the Windows install that would restore the computer to defaults. I'd look and see if you can find it, if such a thing exists.

Is it imperative that you need to restore it to factory defaults? Why not use Knoppix or another Linux live CD to remove the virus?
