Detective Conan

Are they planning on rerunning it in any way here in the US? I know it's not as good as it is in Japanese, and I know they have it on DVD, but they don't have the 1st, 2nd and 3rd seasons.

They're releasing them though.

I haven't heard of any plans for [as] to acquire to episodes, nor to even re-run what they have shown. In fact, I think I read that they lost the rights to air any DC episodes.

Modspam:

I personally like the dub more than the Japanese version; the name changes are annoying, but I adore the voice acting. The German one is probably the best all around, though.

I prefer the dub as well. The name changes never bothered me, and Conan's, Shin'ichi's, Ran's, and Kogoro's dub voices are brilliantly cast.

And Agustus, they are releasing seasons 1-3 right now. If you're interested, the first 9 episodes of season 1 are available as a two-disc set. Season 1, Volume 2, which contains episodes 10-15, comes out on May 2, which isn't too far from now.

you know the german one? cool, I think it´s a brilliant dub, and I´m normally a sub fan. but the US dub is cool as well, especially shinichi.

I´m not to fond of the original either...kogoro just doesn´t seem as adorable in the original to me

I love this anime, though I've only seen about 100 episodes of it (an astounding 1/4!). The cases are usually pretty good, though sometimes unrealistic. Is a person going to SERIOUSLY use a sock filled with rocks as a projectile (from some case I can't remember)?

I prefer the original over the dubbed, though if I had axess to them, I would definately watch the dub. Though I saw the dub first, they suddenly stopped airing, so I had to find the episodes elsewhere. Now, after about 96 episodes, I've gotten attached to the original.

One thing that irks me though, is that whenever Conan gets a new gadget, he's likely to never use it again (in some cases). Has he ever used that fax machine in a lunchbox? Or those suspenders that retract? It's kind of annoying... And another thing, if Conan has super-powered shoes, why doesn't he just run up and kick the criminal? Surely that's more humane that kicking a brick at them...

Well, in some cases, the criminal has a gun or a knife; Conan has enough common sense to not go charging at an armed person, so he finds some way to distract them and then hits them from a distance while their back is turned. In other cases, he's just too far away from the criminal to attack them head on, so he has to kick something at the criminal; it's his only option.

But there are a few times where he could've just kicked the criminal (an example being the Kaito Kid episodes), so I'm not sure why he doesn't. Maybe it's just personal preference.

Adult Swim never did finish showing the remaining episodes of Case Closed. I wonder why?

It wasn't getting good ratings; simple as that.

Aww... Crap.
FUNi is running Case Closed on the Funimation Channel. I'd supply the link, but it isn't wanting to work for me... so google it or something. 1<_<1

DC *did* look rather dated when it aired on AS, which undoubtedly didn't help ratings any, but it's 10 years old for god's sake! Of course, they couldn't start from a later point without confusing the hell out of everyone...

One thing that irks me though, is that whenever Conan gets a new gadget, he's likely to never use it again (in some cases). Has he ever used that fax machine in a lunchbox? The bento-fax machine has never been used again, the suspenders have been used all of two times, and Conan probably prefers not to get violent unless he has to(which he rarely does, when you think about it. He'd probably only have to start attacking somehow if the criminal was threatening him or if they were running away). Also, given all those sparks that his shoes sometimes give off, it might actually be safer kicking something inanimate at people instead of kicking the person themself. On a side note, [SPOIL]Conan's earring-phone eventually vanishes into thin air, presumably because Conan winds up getting two cell phones at one point(one to use as Conan, the other to use as Shinichi), so that's ANOTHER gadget that goes poof. But in Aoyama's defense, cell phones were undoubtedly far less common when he introduced the earring-phone than they are now.[/SPOIL] On another gadget-related note...it bugs me that Conan's wristwatch only holds one needle. Is it that hard to have two? Would it mean that Kogoro/Sonoko wouldn't stay asleep long enough for Conan to make proper deductions and explainations or something? :/ I can see Conan tranquilsing most criminals more easily than him kicking stuff at them.

One thing that bugs me a little is that it's implied that time passes in the series, and it is also implied that time doesn't pass in the series(or that it passes very slowly). We occassionaly get a reference to holidays, each season has passed a few times, Conan stops wearing that suit all the time(yes, he CAN wear casual clothing!), the Shouen Tantei-dan actually becomes less annoying(Mitsuhiko in particular), and we've actually seen technology advance from the internet being something that's "Getting popular among us scientists"(to use Agasa's words) to cell phones being used even by 6-year-olds, and with all the modern add-ons to boot. But Conan's still a little kid, nobody's graduated or even been seen going on to the next grade, and Ran still acts as if Shinichi's only been gone for a few months(instead of 10 years; she'd probably have moved on to another love interest by now if the series actually did have time progress like real life). Gosho can't help having to reflect the fact that technology now isn't technology from 1996, but it's still quite odd overall.

In closing...Kaitou Kid owns your soul. Do not deny this fact. >:O (on a side note, anyone who's interested in Kid needs to read Magic Kaito. Now. Or at least find summaries of it. Or something. Kid's awesome enough in DC, but MK is where all his backstory and such is, so you actually know WHY he does the thigns he does. And...some other interesting things that I won't spoil for you. ;< Although it only seems to be in manga form, from what I've seen.)

...can you tell that I don't get to talk about this series much? D:

Yes, but I don't either, so that's why I asked. Also, do they plan on
tanslating the movies?

I love this series. <3 I only saw what they showed on [adult swim] and that wasn't too much, sadly. I really miss this series. I use to record it all the time....

I personally like the English name changes and the dubbing. I thought it was really well done. ^^

Yes, that´s true..I don´t really like detective boy episodes, mainly because they seldom help the main plot to advance, but Mitsuhiko really suprises me after a while with his cleverness ^^ In some episodes he just seem too clever for his age...I hope at the end of DC we´ll see how Mitsuhike will be when he´s in Shinichi´s age ^^

I think iits because of so many fillers that it feels like shinichi is trapped insed conan for years now. I think there aren´t as many holiday cases in the manga as in the anime. I think Shinichi is probably a year missing or so ( well...after 300 episodes shinichi still says that he has a mind of 17)

argh, shoot..I wish I could say everything in german..would make things a lot easier for me ^^; I hope you understand what I mean.

Well, in Detective Conan, it's very rare to see ANY episode that helps the main plot advance.

But I agree with you; I do like the regular episodes more than the ones that star Conan & the Detective Boys, but you grow to like them sooner or later; they bring a sense of fun to the show that we don't normally see in the regular murder episodes.

No, it is still going on in Japan, which means it's going to take a LONG time for FUNimation to dub all the episodes/movies.

Ah crap, I totally forgot it was still going in Japan. Well, maybe they'll keep releasing at the rate they have been (We got, what, 9 episodes early this month, and were getting a bunch May 2nd?), so it won't take them 50 years to get it all out like with DBZ.

Eh, the Detective Boys are alright sometimes, but they can get annoying...

I've only seen the first move (though I have the second), but I wasn't all that impressed. They made it WAY too obvious, because of the lack of new characters. I hope the others are better (which I've heard they are).

The later movies *are* much better(and have slighly less ShinichixRan shoved down our throats), the fifth movie in particular(unless you really, really, REALLY hate Haibara. In that case, the 9th movie makes a good substitute). Basically, the first two are fairly similar, the 3rd is sort of like a special(you know, the hour, hour and a half, and two hour specials they LOVE to use so much in the main series? I swear that DC is the most hour-or-longer special filled series I have EVER seen.) but with more Kid and more Russian people(aka "the only people in the series without blue eyes :O!), the fourth is the obligatory "ohnoes [SPOIL]Ran[/SPOIL] lost their memory!" story, the fifth movie is God, the sixth movie is pretty much allll little kids(yes, this means Shounen Tantei-dan. And Conan :p) mixed with a bit of [SPOIL]sentient AI and Sherlock Holmes[/SPOIL], the seventh is HatoriHatoriHatoriHatoriKazuhaHatori, the eighth movie is heav...er, Kid, Kid, and [SPOIL]pilot-less airplanes[/SPOIL], and the 9th is sheer awesomeness mixed with [SPOIL]Kogoro actually being useful[/SPOIL].
The tenth movie isn't out yet, but since it has a good chunk of the main characters in it(including some Hakuba(not in a suit for once, no less!) and Kid) and *is* a tenth anniversery movie, it ought to be quite good as well.

On a side note, if I ever see another "Metropolian Police Love Story" title, I will scream. There have been SEVEN of those thus far. Come on title-makers, be creative! Give us "Sato and Takagi on a case together! Wacky Jijiinks Murder Case! (Part One)" titles or something. But no more recycling the same title, or else blood will be shed. D:<
