Well, I've played both, but am more dedicated to Runescape. Of course, I prefer Runescape much more the Diablo. However, both games have quite a few differences. Diablo uses a 2D, sprite-based interface, like what I call the "2nd generation" video games. Runescape on the other hand uses a 100% 3D interface, like XD. This, however, has some outcomes opposite to what could be expected. Runescape's graphics tend to be polygonal and with poor texture, while Diablo's 2D system supports much more detailed ones. As far as gameplay, Runescape definitely has a greater variety of activities, While Diablo has only one objective and acitvity. However, Runescape takes very long to progress your character, and often gets boring. Diablo has a lot of gore, and Runescape has none. There are many other similar differences that make TRULY unbiased opinions very hard to give or find, for that matter. But, I will go with Runescape.

I've never played Diablo but it must be better than runescape. Don't play runescape unless it's the only MMORPG available (I hardly play MMORPG's anymore because they get in the way of my real life). Runescape has visuals that will make your eyes burn, crappy combat involving a click and watch scene, and repetitive quests that make the experience horrible. I played till I reached lvl 21 and then I quit, it was a very horrible experience. If you can afford it, I would reccomend Final Fantasy XI that was my favorite MMORPG I've ever played (warning, the main story ends). However I only was able to play it for two months because of it's hefty monthly fee.

I have a small amount of knowledge of Runescape, but I've been a player of Diablo for about 8 years and I love it. Many years ago when I first got online I used Diablo to chat with and learned some important life lessons (i.e. if someone offers you a really sweet item but says you have to go to the dungeon to get it, you're about to lose your ears >_<) so obviously it has sentimental value, more recently (still about 6 years ago though :p) we got Diablo 2 and we played it to death over and over again, and now and again to this day we still sometimes feel the need to play, it has awsome replay value that's why I love it ^_^
