Did any one like it better when the series wasn’t so obsessed with the first series?

Gen 5 still sold over 15 million copies. It may not be the most popular generation, but it was by no means a failure. The reason they focus heavily on Gen 1 is because of branding/marketing. The roster has gotten way too bloated and they don't expect new fans to know every single Pokemon. But they want them to be familiar with the first 151 because everyone knows them. It doesn't matter if you started in 96 or 2023, you know who Charizard, Gengar, Eevee etc. are.

Yeah BW barely "undersold" especially for where the series was at the time. If that seriously scared them to making multiple negative changes, that's unfortunate.

BW's sales were fine. They were released when the 3DS was right around the corner. Masuda did learn that a "fresh start" (really just in terms of the Pokedex) wasn't what most fans wanted, which is fine.

It's Game Freak and TPCi who prioritize Kanto (for logical reasons), not the anime. SV don't do anything special with Kanto Pokemon (Johto got more evolutions and Paradox species), so this isn't the best time to complain. As for the anime, let's break it down:

OS: One cohesive story. More could have been done with the Johto team.

AG: FRLG promotion and the 10th anniversary. The biggest OS tribute was a special that didn't even get a TV broadcast in Japan. Kanto felt like a different region.

DP: Very little Kanto aside from two Gary episodes.

BW: They used Charizard (after Dawn and Cynthia) to boost the ratings. Nothing of note happened with it, and Mewtwo was replaced just because.

XY: They gave Mega Charizard X to a new character instead of Ash, who focused on Greninja. No real callbacks to any series.

SM: They gave Misty and Brock two returns (for the 20th anniversary and LGPE promotion) after writing them out of a movie, which could have been canon otherwise. Misty had been missing for 11 years at that point.

PM2019: For a series with many episodes set in Vermilion, we didn't even see Lt. Surge or Squirtle. Kanto Pokemon were prioritized for fillers, but not the actual region or characters. Even Gary was brought back for Go, not Ash.

MPM: Badly needed to make Ash's story come full circle. No, we don't need to see all the characters that already came back in PM2019 and got closure. The reserves are enough to remind us of the other series.

The problem isn't using the companions from Kanto. It's making them part of the main cast again. If it was just one episode for misty and one for brock, I wouldn't mind. But why couldn't the show be just Ash reuniting with past friends and pokémon?
Are you seriously complaining over the fact that since this is the end it's appropriate to bring back his first companions to be with him at the end of it?

They're back to main cast because much like all 151 of the original Pokemon, everyone knows who MIsty and Brock are even those that stopped watching twenty years ago. They are much more well known then any of Ash's other traveling companions

Also the OS brought the biggest ratings for the franchise. Over 10 million viewers weekly watched the OS, that's massive. None of the other generations have been able to come close to the OS in the ratings.

And here comes AL with his desperation, using "ratings" and casual viewership as an excuse.

Hmm, that's what we got in PM2019 and many people complained about the lack of depth. Do you just want shallow fan service in spades? We have that in the reserves.

This mini series should be about Ash realizing what he wants to do for the rest of his life. The only mentors he ever really had were Misty and Brock, not the other companions. Some of you just don't want to admit that.
