Is it me or have all the characters been getting soft?Ash and Misty used to be rowdy now they slowed down a bit.I think it all started with Tracey the only calm/ been there done that went back for more kind of guy.

Yeah, ok!
I think you're confused pheonix.

You ever hear of something called "character development?"

Ash lost his immature, impulsive, and happy-go-lucky personality after traveling through Kanto, the Orange Islands, and Johto. In Hoenn, he's much more aggressive, and a lot less happy-go-lucky than he was before. Ash lost his "goofiness" so to speak. He's a lot more mature and acts as a mentor to May and Max. If anything, he's much more determined than ever before.

Misty lost her attitude once Togepi hatched, and became motherly for pretty much the rest of the series.

Brock...is...the same more or less. o_O

I'm not sure what you mean by "soft", but it's nice to see the characters change over time. Gives the show some sort of... well, time. Like they're actually growing, ya know. The only thing I almost never seem to like in terms of the characters changing is their dub voices. >_>

very well said

character development and maturity play a part in this and it's better this way

Ash thinks more strategicly (sp?) in his battles rather than just going all out with attacking moves.

the Ash that we have now leaves the old Ash in the dust

You tend to notice a lot of differences in characters when they first air, and in newer episodes. For example Patrick didn't seem like a retard in the 1st season of SpongeBob Square Pants, but now he's an idiot.

if anything, he's now seems LESS mature then when he was first introduced

mostly from the asking women out standpoint, the very first time he's asked a woman out (Officer Jenny from the Cascade badge episode) he was actually senseible and realistic... now he's over the top with cheesy pickup lines that'll never work in real life...

I'm not saying it's a bad thing though...

And I've said this many times before, but I much preferred Satoshi when he was a goofy newbie. With Kasumi, it actually took a bit longer for her to lose her personality than most people remember. It was still intact through the Orange Islands and even into early Jouto.

I agree. Watching ash struggle to become a pokemon master from the start is quite funny. Remeber the pokedex saying only morons have their fod stolen by ratata(sp?)? Funny.

Yeah, many of Satoshi's most memorable moments were in the Kanto region, and many of those were due to his lack of familiarity with the Pokémon training world and his gradual gathering of more and more knowledge. Now, of course, Haruka seems to bridge that gap fairly well.

Yes but Ash still acting like a moron would be poor writing after 3 regions and 5 seasons of build up. It's only natural. I'm just glad they actually gave Ash character development. In Kanto it seemed like he was a hopeless little boy with all these strong trainers seemingly towering over him. Now Ash has gotten so much better that he seems to be in "that" crowd if you know what I mean.

Ash battling every single trainer in the Petalburg episodes was pretty cool, he beat all of them fair and square with his Pokemon over and over again. Ash pretty much took on an entire city of young trainers and won, now what does that tell you?

Plus we have May for this now, although May has been improving rather rapidly that she doesn't make too many clueless battle strategies anymore either...

I have also noticed that Gary hasn't matured much at all from when Ash left Kanto.

I don't know where you're getting that idea from. Whenever Shigeru showed up in Kanto, he was always teasing Satoshi and insulting his abilities as a trainer. But when he reappeared in mid-Jouto he had gained some respect for Satoshi, and especially after the Jouto League.

Yeah like most people said it's called character development. It would be kind of annoying if Ash and Misty were the same as they were when the show first started it would show thier personalities were nothing more then a square. Despite Ash's faults and yes he still has some he really has come a long way since he first started I'm really impressed with how good of a trainer he is despite him loosing in the leagues. Although he still tends every once in awhile runs into things without thinking like when he's after a Pokemon he always ends up wandering off by himself. But that's Ash for ya.

Character development has nothing to do with how Kasumi turned out. That's called character destruction. ;/

Some people say bad about mature Ash. They liked him when he was a funny child. But Ash can't be a baby forever. He started his travel when he was 10 years old kid, now he is older (probably 14 or 15) so he is more mature. I think, every character should be like that. He was funnier as a newbie, now he is advanced trainer so...hmm..
Misty was a kid too (maybe she was 10 or 11) and she was crazy XD but now she is older. I don't like her calm personality, I liked her as crazy and horrible girl :p Now she is dull.
Tracey is normal. Brock should finally grow up too.

Actually, Takeshi changed a lot about 10 episodes after he first appeared. Seriously, I suggest looking back on the episode where Satoshi first challenged him in the Nibi Gym, he seems like a completely different person, so stern and overly serious, so much like the character you encounter from the game (honestly, can you look at Takeshi today and make that connection to the games so easily?). For the following episodes, he seemed to keep this mature side to him, and never really chased wildly after girls. Sure, he was remarking on Seiyo being cute in that academy episode (Satoshi was too, mind you), a few slight blushes at a cute girl, and as you said, he did hit on one of the Junsa (in an extremely casual way, too), but in any case, whenever he was around a female, he wasn't all over them.

I think it was in "Spiritual Pokemon and the Summer Festival" that Takeshi's hormonal rage was made a bit more apparent, with him being depressed over summer ending and the resulting disappearance of swimsuits (not to mention the main plot of the episode, in which he's attracted to the ghost of a maiden). Immediately after that episode, in "Bye Bye Butterfree", you can see he starts acting towards girls in a much more extreme manner, trying to force Satoshi's Butterfree into hooking up with the cute female trainer's Butterfree. The next time a Joy and Junsa appeared, in the episode where Kasumi got her Koduck, he got to the point where he'd lean up towards them and hold their hands. From there, it eventually went on to his over-the-top reactions and fantasies. What I find annoying is that I've seen Takeshi's character slowly digress into that, but has he ever matured much in his other aspects? Not as I recall, but feel free to correct me. For that matter, even with his hitting on girls, I think it's remained unchanged since early Jouto (around the time when it got to the point that Kasumi had to start pulling his ear just to get him away. For whatever reason, the girls stopped doing the job themselves by slapping him away or verbally turning him down or whatever). So it looks to me like Takeshi's been a pretty static character this whole time.

Also, the way his character changed like that in itself seems pretty unrealistic. This guy's been in his late teens for how long now (maybe even early 20s, I don't know)? Unless you consider the possibility that he's some late bloomer whose balls finally finished dropping when the summer ended and that false maiden ghost appeared, the way his crazy attitude towards women just so suddenly and immediately erupted like that seems like one huge plothole to me. I think one of the writers just suddenly figured Takeshi was "too" mature and serious for their tastes, so they felt like dumbing the guy down the second they noticed it, or something.

Heracross, that's not maturing that's just admitting defeat.(refering to the gary situation).Just think about it Ash almost traveled half the world to develop his skils, Gary can't gloat or put down Ash any more because of that.

So I suppose when Drew gives up after May beats him at a Grand Festival it's considered "defeat" too? It's still character development. All rivalries come to an end eventually, with the main hero beating the rival.
