Do you agree with: profanity and pornography in games?

If you don't like that stuff in games don't buy those games.

Ratings exist for a reason.

Basically this. So long as there's a ratings board, I don't think restricting content from appearing in games is permissible. Then again, I do come from a hippie country where we have free speech, so maybe I just don't know anything.

I do, however, think the ratings are poorly enforced and our current ratings system is slightly... imperfect. But what can you do.

Profanity in games is the same as profanity in real life, and TV shows, and movies, and music. First off, you are not going to be able to avoid it no matter what. You can, however, choose to limit how much you have to come in contact with it. In other words, stop playing those games and stop watching those TV shows and movies or listening to that type of music.

Most people can hear profanity and not even be affected by it. I, myself, really couldn't care less if someone in a game says before a battle, "Let's win this one." or "Let's f*ck 'em up out there." Words are words, and they will never bother me unless it becomes something degrading that could possibly offend a certain group of people. Even then, I'm pretty laid back. But I'm sure things like that would offend someone.

At the same time, they do have ratings for a reason. When you get something that says Rated T, they will list reasons which could be "Mild violence" "Mild language" "Suggestive themes" etc. Meaning you could find out the reasons for what how the game or whatever got that rating. Rated M could say "Excessive violence" or something along those lines.

As for pornography, it's hard for me to really say anything against that. Sex, nudity, etc, is something that is completely normal and just about everyone experiences that stuff in their life. The reason that violence is considered "worse" to me is because that's not something you go around experiencing. Hopefully, you will go your entire life without pulling a trigger on someone or having a gun in your face. However, almost everyone is going to experience sex or something sexual in their life.

And you really should know what a penis or vagina is. It's not something that you should be sheltered from nor offended by. They exist, and yes, actually, you have one of the two. Check below. It's hard to believe that someone actually hears "vagina" or sees one and then cries or has nightmares or is thoroughly hurt by it. And if you are, then .... there's not really much for me to say to that.

I do think that younger children should not be exposed to great amounts of this stuff all the time. I was exposed to horror movies at a young age and was fine, but not everyone would be. My dad didn't want me to play Super Smash Bros. until I was like 12 because he was worried about the violence.

My point is, I really find it hard to believe that someone is going to actually be offended over a bad word of sex. And if someone is actually upset over what they find in a game or movie, then stop playing or watching. Most people can handle that stuff, though.

Exactly. If parents are so upset about their kids being exposed to this kind of stuff, then why the hell do they buy it for them in the first place? "Oh, I didn't read the rating or anything, but I'm still suing you for scarring my child for life."

I agree with profanity and pornography in all their wonderful and varied forms.

My kind of guy.

Those are the only things that make games worth playing though. :(

I don't think they should be in games and I don't want them in my games. Why do you think I almost never play anything above rated T? Still, no matter what we want, the games will still be made, so all we can do is not play them and keep our own kids or nieces, nephews, etc. from playing them.

Because you're scared?

No, I've seen and heard all of it before. I just don't want to. My life is full of enough sin, I don't want one of the few things I find joy in to be filled with it. God wants me to avoid those things, so I'll do my best to do that. Now if anyone wants to say something stupid and immature about my beliefs, you can begin to criticize me now.

Backwards thinking?
Just like there are movies and books intended solely for adults, there are games intended solely for adults as well. If you lack the ability to discern which games are appropriate for kids, despite all the labels and warnings on them, then that is your fault alone.

Why don't people ever seem to grasp that very simple concept?

Personally, I'm not going to mock your beliefs as long as they stay just that: your beliefs. It's one thing to share your beliefs as you are doing in this post, and there's nothing wrong with that at all. But, I will point out that not everybody shares your beliefs. As I said, just like there are movies and books targeted solely towards adults because they contain adult-oriented material, there are games as well.

You might not agree with this, but you shouldn't expect every video game to be "child" friendly (as seems to be the politically correct term to use now, to avoid religious stereotyping). Some games do contain content that you might find offensive, but as you so clearly pointed out, not all of them do. Gaming companies know full well that E and T games sell better than M or AO; no different than movie studios know that G rated movies have bigger gross than PG or R. They have a larger target demographic. Case in point, if Pokemon wasn't as "childish" as it is, it wouldn't be nearly as successful as it is.

As long as you keep your beliefs to yourself and don't try to use them to subjugate others - in other words, by not standing on a soap box and demanding that all games with "sin" (as you put it) be discontinued and removed from the store shelves - then you and I will get along fine. But, the moment you start acting like your beliefs are superior to any one other person, or that you have the divine responsibility to "champion the righteous cause against sinful video games", I will be right there to be the "defender of free speech and free market". Consider yourself warned.

Must we drag religion into everything?

For my own preference, I don't care for nudity and excessive swearing. However, for the most part, I'd agree with the other posters that, as long as the game clearly states what's in it, then you should keep away if offended. However, there are some things, those that we can all agree are 'wrong' in real life, that shouldn't be in games. Like a game that allows to you rape someone (not sure if that exists). Or something I heard about a few years ago, a simulator that allows you the be the assassin and shoot JFK. So for me, there are lines, but I wouldn't freak out over profanity or nudity.

Depend on who their target audience is. While adding profanities and porn stuff to a children's game is suicide, have none of them makes an R-rated game pointless.

Hey it's their job to create a product that sells.
Is it their fault that the worlds f***ed up and 5 year olds want to blow the heads off of others? NO.
That is what ratings are for, but kids will always find a way around....
