Do you want gyms back or a similar form of gyms?

It's not that I want them back necessarily but I expect them to return because of the overhaul that they got in Shield and Sword which made gyms popular again.
Which was only done to reference the British Premier League, and this region isn't based on the UK, aside from a small piece.

Er but isn't the new region based on Spain? Isn't Spain also well known as a place that has tons of sports leagues especially soccer/football? There could just as easily be gyms in the new region to tie into that.

It appears that this game is going for more of a school theme rather than a sports theme.

I do think they'll return since they've been a staple of the franchise for such a long time, although I hope they're handled the way they were from Generation I through VI instead of how Shield and Sword handled them.

If we are provided with a system that incorporates gyms or something similar, which types and/or themes would you like to see represented this time around?

For simplicity, I'm going to go under the assumption that the gym formula will return though I do not think this will actually be the case in the actual games.

Gym 1 - Ground Type / Explorer Theme
Gym 2 - Normal Type / Baking Theme
Gym 3 - Fairy Type / Romance Theme
Gym 4 - Flying Type / Flamenco Theme (Scarlet Version) | Bug Type / Maracas Theme (Violet Version)
Gym 5 - Steel / Cycling Theme
Gym 6 - Poison Type / Winemaking Theme
Gym 7 - Electric / Disco Theme
Gym 8 - Psychic Type / Holy Magic Theme (Scarlet Version) | Dark Type / Evil Magic Theme (Violet Version)

Hmm, well in SwSh we got Grass, Fire, Water, Rock, Fighting, Ice, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, and Fairy. So we might want to steer away from some of those. Additionally, Normal, Electric, Ground, Flying, and Bug didn't get any prominent type specialist of any kind in the game (whereas Poison, Psychic, and Steel had rivals/DLC characters that specialized in those types so they're kind of on the fence), so those types should probably have priority in this game. So I would start with those 5 (Bug especially is due for one since it hasn't been a gym/trial/Elite 4 type since XY). They'll probably also choose types that are related to various cultural jobs and hobbies, so I see a very good chance of seeing Grass, Fire, Fighting, and Ghost in some way. Poison and Dark don't historically have a lot of type specialists (and especially not gym leaders) so they would be good candidates too. I don't think we'll see every single one of those types make it (although I do think we could see a good 9 or 10 of the 11), but I think most of them are distinct possibilities. Really it seems like Game Freak's caught onto that people like NPC type specialists so they've been including more of them in recent games (this was especially prevalent in SM which had every type except Ice represented in some form, but SwSh also had a lot themselves), it's more a matter of will they actually be gym leaders or something else that's the more interesting question.

And if there's an Elite 4 in this game (or something similar), it'd be good to see at least one of them be a new type that hasn't been represented yet (Normal, Grass, Electric, and Fairy are the only types with no Elite 4 representative). Fairy's been a bit overused since its introduction, so if there's a Fairy specialist at all it should either be there or should be another type of NPC (rival, DLC character, villain, some other type of NPC).

Would be cool if they bring gyms back but change the way gyms work. Maybe less single type focused and more based on strategies.

I want a fairy gym.

Doesn't it seem like it's time to give Fairy a break? Since Fairy was introduced we've had 2 gyms and a trial (which is basically like having 3 gyms in a row), most types don't get that much in a row (some haven't even had that much period, we haven't had more than 1 or 2 Ground, Poison, or Dark type gyms). If the Elite 4 is in I'd like to see a Fairy type Elite 4 member, but other than that I think we should give Fairy gyms a rest for 1 generation. All types have at least one generation when they have nothing (I'm mildly upset myself that there was no Electric specialist whatsoever in SwSh but it's not a big deal because it happens from time to time).

Splendid
Fairy e4 would be even better

What is the airspeed of an unladen Swellow?
Since it’s open world, they should have a gym for each type but only require you to complete any 8 of them to qualify for the League.

I also really liked the way the SwSh handled the Championship. It was definitely more anime-like, and I hope it returns.

While I agree that the Fairy Type feels like it has been overused since its introduction I am also conflicted in regards to the notions of romance centered around Spain being a good time to market it.

I also really want the Poison Type to get some more representation this time around, and I would like it if we also get a Legendary that bares it since I do not think that we have had one in all of Pokémon History.

Eternatus and Nihilego are Poison type, so we're good there. We are a bit lacking on Poison type gym leaders though, the only ones are Koga/Janine, Roxie, and technically Klara (although she's not fought as a gym leader).

.... I... I completely forgot about Eternatus..... but I also hope that we get more poison type gym leaders or challengers or whatever this generation's competitive adversaries are.

I prefer traditional gyms. It would be great to have spectators again like they did in SwSh as it makes the battle and the whole atmosphere more exciting and energetic. But if we get something else, I'm fine with that too as long as SV have a good storyline and challenging gameplay.

The first trailer showed us a town square with a circle what appears to represent every type elements. It looks to me that types are going to be a major thing. I wonder if every type gets its own specialist this time. If they want to make SV even more version exclusive than they already are (by having different professors), then I'd like to see that each game has 8 different gym leaders (or their equivalents). They tested this way subtly in SwSh with Bea/Allister, Gordie/Melony, and Klara/Avery.

Speaking about gyms or similar challenges, do you think there's an Elite 4 in SV?

I think that there will be neither Gyms or an Elite 4 in SV.

Loved the Stadium style gyms in SW/SH. I am British, so obvious bias for the love they gave GB there in design/feel/etc (I could talk endlessly about how brilliant the railways were in SW/SH, what we saw of them, but I really, really wanted them to do more with them. Such a missed opportunity to hark back to something like the battle subway...)

Gyms need to come back, frankly. They're a staple. If they have the ability to adapt level/team choices based on the path you've chosen in the world, that would be best.

I would like gyms, but I'd like them to be open world like they're advertising the world to be. I liked how Sword/Shield made gyms a sports league. I'd like that, in a way, but not the exact same way. Like, I'd like there to be eighteen gyms, but you can pick which eight you want to do, in any order you want.

Honestly I know they just had a Dark Gym, but we have had one! One! Dark gym and one Dark type Kahuna with Nanu. It is my favorite type so I'm down for another Dark Gym, maybe have a Fairy/Dark Gym split for version difference that would be interesting since they are basically opposite types. XD
