Does Ash having NO Water Pokémon and multiple empty slots hint an Ash-Greninja return for the league

Greninja ain't coming back no more. Once released, you just don't come back.

Hopeful for Gen 8
I do definitely get a Charizard vibe from Greninja, in the sense that I don't think it will remain with Squishy forever, just like Charizard didn't stay with Liza forever. Finally, at the end of BW, multiple generations later, it did come to Oak's Lab. I don't know whether it will happen in SM or the future but I definitely see a similar arc with Greninja sometime.

Goodra would like to speak up

Exactly yet he came back for the league and team flare finale. You clearly said after being released they don't come back which is wrong.
Goodra only returned during XY series. XY series ended and Goora did not remain in Ash's team. If it did not remain there is no reason for Goodra to come back. It is clear that Ash chose to permanently release him. Either Goodra nor Greninja ain't coming back.

Goodra isn't released. I don't think you know what being released means.
Sir, you're wrong.
Goodra is fully released.

Ash not having a water Pokemon this series makes sense because there's a water specialist this series and she has been chosen to represent Waterium Z, which without would leave a supposed water type on Ash's team with a disadvantage of no signature Z Move. We're still wondering what they have planned for Torracat due to Kiawe representing Fireium Z, though he arguably has more alternatives than Popplio, whose all about water right now.

Remember that the OS struggled to keep a water specialist relevant because Ash had a more charismatic water type throughout the series. Even as we are right now, Lana is struggling to maintain limelight, imagine if she wasn't even given that.

Goodra is most likely as accessible as any other Oak'd Pokemon (unlike Lapras, Butterfree etc) and Greninja, I'd be willing to bet is still more likely to return ahead of 90% of his other Pokemon

There being another Water-type specialist means nothing if Misty was a thing before. OS never did struggle with both Ash and Misty.

Wasn't Misty infamous for being in the background for most of Johto until the Whirl Cup? And I remember far more limelight being given to Squirtle and Totodile than any of Misty's team besides Psyduck and Togepi.

Does anyone remember the beginning of SM, in a flashback, when Ash handed over five or six pokéballs to Prof Oak?

Besides anyone who says that a pokémon can't return after a region, "because it will take the focus of the current starter(s)", two little things:

One) Charizard did return in AG, and did not take the spotlight away from Septile. Septile returned in DP and did not take the focus away from Infernape or Toreterra (who didnt get any focus at all after its evolution)

Two) Some pokémon arent affected by an older starter returning because they didnt get any focus anyway. Ossawoth, Snivy,Pignite didnt get barely any focus, so Charizard returning didn't make it worse. If a starter would return in Alola it wouldnt be bad, because Tarrocat and Rowlet didnt get many focus episodes anyway.

Alola is a bit like Jotho don't you think?
Both many fillers, not fully evolved starter pokémon.

Alola doesn't have that many fillers. I'm currently watching through a lot of the Hoenn stuff along on Pokemon tv and there are a LOT of fillers there. A lost Lunatone, a bunch of Relicanth and a worthless treasure, a bunch of kids arguing about whether Gorebyss or Huntail is better, a bunch of people on a random island doing physical exercises all day because they think it makes them stronger in Pokemon battles. People are just more offended by Alola's fillers because they have the impression Ash's team isn't as large as it should be.

Alola's fillers usually at least flesh out the main cast and give them some development, most of these past fillers were the kids tagging along with some random filler characters and give those filler characters development and an arc instead.

What on earth? Goodra was already brought back, it's not released. Ash still owns it.

Do you think a Pokemon has to be at Oak's lab or something? How is Goodra released? You could arguably make a case for Greninja (even though Ash still has his pokeball), but not Goodra.

It would be good IMO, the return of Ash-Greninja I mean... one day probably... but i don't get these vibes from the writers (yet). So, in short, It will be another missed opportunity, the number #52.062 LOL

Writers tend to use only the regional captures + Pikachu nowdays in the relative saga, It seems that they are not interested in bringing back the reserves or old pokémon in general (expecially in battle i mean).

Still, I have a small hope somewhere. Ash-greninja is popular, featured even is some Pokémon side games, he is a bank-tradeable pokémon, he appeared first in the sun and moon games (from the demo version), Ash-greninja is even featured in SSBU (final Smash)...

Well not according to @pokemon fan 132 he thinks misty was the best handled character in the show, besides totodile also did little other than his dancing gag, squirtle on the other hand was a beast not only was he a starter he also belonged to main character of the show no way any of misty's pokemon would have gtten any limelight and the screentime togepi and psyduck were getting were only comin relief with less substance.

Few days ago i had this same feeling, there are some similarities with both regions, both in johto and alola most of the companions are background characters like brock and misty who were mostly useless and were in background for most of johto same way lana, mallow and sophocles are here in background most of times. Both series had too many fillers though alola is fine in this regards that it has more ongoing arcs even thouh if they are little rushed.
