Is there a government in the poke'mon world? Is there the labor party of kanto and the national communist party of hoenn or is there a global system. Can johto wage war on the sevii islands? Do they even have mayors in all regions? Does it even matter?

Hm .. interesting thought, and I would like to see some in the future, as they don't exist now. But, I can see why not. Kids wouldn't have a clue what to do with a government. They'd get all confuzzled.

Of course it does, it's just overshadowed by the Pokémon League.

Exactly. If you read the manga, the Gym Leaders are a part of the government for regulations on Pokémon competitions in order for Trainer recognition (challenging the Elite Four and high ranking status for towns and cities). The Pokémon League is in charge of the Gym Leaders, but the Pokémon League is also government-owned, meaning the government owns the Pokémon League.

Government > Pokémon League > Gym Leaders > Gym Trainers > Trainers

Gym Trainers are Trainers who work for a Gym Leader and provide guidance and tests for Trainers. The final test, given by the Gym Leader, is a battle with the Gym Leader themself against the on-going challenger. Like we all know, the reward is a Badge.

How do I know all of this? I used to work for the Pokémon TCG League several years back as a volunteer. I still have rare and promotional cards from the League, including their 16 badges. Hehehehe...

Would you rather have Lance and Drake debating about how they should own each other's land, or would you rather have a Dragonite vs. Salamence match? I think that answers intself...

Blaze Dragon

T3h Blazing Ranger!
I think they have, but, it would be very boring to put it in an anime or a game

No guess not, that's how team rocket survives...

Well, they do seem to have a Police force, (the Officer Jennies, and in Orre, Officer Sherles and Johnson-those two must be SO overworked, LOL, no wonder Cipher manage to wreak havoc!) so there must be SOME organisation there.

as a matter of interest, how do Gym Leaders reach that position? There must be criteria that they must reach, and then I would imagine that the Elite Four have the final vote on who of the hopefuls who meet the criteria (whatever those may be) become Gym Leaders based on where they want to open a gym, what Type their team would represent, and where Gyms are needed.

Anyone else want to throw in their thoughts?

Nothing to be done
I always assumed that since the world of the games (presumably an alternate version of Japan, but that's another issue) is so Pokemon-centric that thier only form of government would be the Pokemon League itself. The Pokemon League encompassing both the Elite Four and Gym Leaders. Orre presumably exists in an entirely different part of the world, so that could explain the mayor of Phenac City, and the reason as to why there is no Pokemon League in Orre.

In an Kanto episode where two places in the same town tried to become Gyms. They may have succeeded except for the fact that they were both found incompetent by a person who decided on what can become a Gym, the decider subsequently was a Nurse Joy. So, she decides what place can become a Gym. Elite Four probably substitute for Leader as found in an episode 2 weeks back. As for successors, Leader probably chooses as found in the case of Lavaridge town. They may also choose by having some many tournament, but it is in the hands of the Leader. However, if the Leader is found incompetent then the local Nurse Joy will relieve him/her and an Elite Four will substitute, in extreme cases Nurse Joy may substitute with her Blissey/Chansey. Or close the Gym until a leader is picked by Nurse Joy or a tournament is arranged, whatever Nurse Joy decides. The tournament ideas are speculation on my part but everything else is found in the anime. ;025;

I've never really given this one much thought, but there must be some kind of government. There are references to governments, for example the mayor of Phenac City and the police officers. The government, I assume, would be nothing to do with the Pokemon League. Seeing as how Pokemon training is basically a sport, the Pokemon League woyuld just be a large sporting organisation, which the government would makes sure are operating safely for both humans and Pokemon. The government is obviously not shown very much in the anime or games because they're about people in the area of 10 years old.

I always saw it as somthing like
Pokemon Leauge>A small, weak government that makes small decisions.
There can be cases where the government overRules the Leauge, butt 99% of the time, what the leauge says go

Yeah, but it's too weak to do much except pay for public facilities and the League. Thank God. [/anarchist]
