Don't Give In, Piplup! An Ice Floe Race in the Sinnoh Region!!
At Vermilion City's port, Ash & Go find a worn out and disheartened Piplup. Taking it back to the laboratory, they're contacted by its Trainer who states that it swam there all the way from Sinnoh. Ash & Go decide to go to Sinnoh to escort Piplup back and learn of an Ice Floe Race. Will they enter?
The TR scene is hilarious... Of all the Pokémon present, only Pikachu fought TR's Machamp and Bearctic head-on... The Empoleon just ran away from the attacks...
Yet again Ash didn't get anything, a colossal waste of time!
The only saving grace was Team Rocket, though is the gacha machine just going to give them Pokemon a stereotypical Pokemon villain would have? Tyranitar, Gyarados, now Beartic and Machamp.... and possibly a Corviknight too if the opening's anything to go by.
Go needs to go one ****ing episode without catching something. Just ONE!
I would have called this a boring ol' filler episode that is somewhat saved by Team Rocket if that was the case but gee whiz, there goes Go again catching yet another mon. It's like the kid is on a secret mission to exterminate all the filler episodes on the planet by making he sure he catches something in every episode.
Good on him.
So therefore I'll now have to say that is is just "A boring episode that is somewhat saved by Team Rocket (and when I mean that, I mean the TRio, not the silly gacha crap or the robots they're stuck with)". There isn't anything interesting going on because everyone is about as stale as cucumber and I could certainly care less about this random Piplup or Croagunk or the slow paced race that's going on around them.
At least their trainer is cute I guess but one cute thing does not equal a good episode.
Therefore this episode loses the race before it even starts... NEXT!
Also what happened to the race? Did they just randomly abandon it after Team Rocket attacked or did it go on ahead? I don't know cause this series sure as hell can't be bothered to tell us.
Gou caught a Tentacool in an episode where Water-types are going to race each other.
He then proceeds to ignore that Tentacool, and catch and use a Mantyke instead.
And here we have a tidy microcosm of everything that's wrong with Gou's goal. Most of his captures are just statistics.
Gou didn't even want that specific Tentacool! But he was all like "oh well, they all count". Yeah, screw the Pokemon's personality and feelings. As long as it fills a page on his Pokedex it's all fine.

Probably the worst episode of the series so far. The previous episode was somewhat good and had some nice battling action. This was a complete filler and Go catching anything won't have much of a significance unless he adds them to his party.

For an episode taking place in Snowpoint and airing on Masuda's birthday, it sure was a missed opportunity that they didn't show off the Diamond Dust weather effect (unless they did and I missed it).
Gou catching Mantyke was obvious from the preview, but didn't expect the Tentacool. Guess he won't be restricted to Pokemon from the region the episode focuses on (even though that means he'll only be getting Gen I mons since he's based in Kanto).
I liked the episode. One of the better ones from this series.
Team Rocket wasn't really needed in this ep, they would've served their purpose better in one of the earlier ones but here the problem could be solved without them. CotD, Piplup and Croagunk were endearing and the plot wasn't bad either. It's just the race was way too short and abandoned for no reason.
It's cool to see the Snowpoint port for the first time in anime.
So... was the race announcer Jeekyo? I mean he sounded like Jeekyo to me, he has the same hair and eye color, as well as being an announcer... but I'm not entirely certain if that really was Yuuji Ueda voicing him or not since while he is in the credits, he's only listed as voicing Sonansu.

Its a Monster of the Week Machine-the one thing the Super Sentai parody Team AKA the Ultra Guardians in SM was missing. Clearly someone on the anime staff realized this and decided to do something about it for some reason. Its honestly kind of disappointing since TR usually have nice bonds with their Pokemon. None of these Pokemon matter when they'll be replaced by next week's episode. Any bonding will feel forced or superficial.

Meh typical cotd/Team Rocket episode; it would have been better if it was set up like an SM filler. And people wanted these over SM fillers? Be careful what you wish for lol.
