RBY and RSE were in the same time era
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe this was confirmed anywhere.
Anyway, let me introduce you to my
time hypothesis:
1. It's been explicitly stated ingame that G/S/C take place three years after R/G/B/Y.
2. FR/LG are Red/Green remakes, and it's clear ingame that they describe the same adventure taking place at the same time.
3. It's not unreasonable to say that Ru/Sa/Em take place during the same time as FR/LG, since Celio makes specific mention to the Hoenn region, Lanette, etc.
4. We can see some curious parallels between the first/third gens and the second/fourth gens in things such as art style and the areas they seem to be focusing on. It's too early to say for sure, but that's the feeling I get.
5. When I first played Ruby/Sapphire, they seemed very much like a regression from the sophisticated Metal-gen style to the more basic Colour-gen style. The game became more offensive; OHKO moves regained their ubiquity; the Elite Four seemed very similar to their Colour-gen counterparts;
there was only one region. I also get the feeling that this was the intent: GF wanted to reboot the series. Why they wanted this is a bit unclear. Perhaps it was beause they felt restricted by the old data structures, but they didn't want to blast on ahead into the series, pretending that the first two generations were still accessible.
This would make the third-gen basically the first-gen all over again; something GF probably put in place to expand the technical possibilities for the upcoming games without actually leaving us "stranded," without the older things available to us. To keep to this parallel, the fourth-gen would have to line up with the second-gen, placing Diamond/Pearl in the same time period as G/S/C. We can also expect them to be large like G/S/C. This leaves three likely possibilities for D/P:
1. They're sequels to Ruby/Sapphire, which would likely give us a new region plus Hoenn once we beat the Elite Four.
2. They're something completely new with a fair geographic distance from any existing region we've seen in the games.
3. They're G/S/C remakes. I find this unlikely, since GF would likely receive poor reviews for making the much anticipated Diamond and Pearl into something we've already seen before.
4. They're new, but take place in a region close to Kanto/Johto, making Kanto/Johto explorable. I find this as unlikely as number 3, since it would create a little too much region overlap between games. People wouldn't buy the G/S/C remakes described below if both Kanto/Johto are already explorable in D/P.
Considering this, I'd expect that we might see, either released at the same time as D/P or shortly after, G/S/C remakes: the FR/LG of the fourth-gen. It's also a possibility that they might be on the GBA, since Nintendo's mentioned many times that they have no intention of retiring the handheld. (Simultaneous, DS/GBA counterpart releases such as Mysterious Dungeon further demonstrate this.)
People may argue that there's no point in having G/S/C remakes, since all the Kanto/Johto Pokémon are already available to us. However, if they're simultaneously or nearly simultaneously released along side D/P, there's a good possibility that some version-exclusive fourth-gen pokes might be included, possibly in an extra mini-region, similar to the Sevii Islands in FR/LG. This would be enough of an excuse for GF to make the titles.
Edit: Holy, that was my longest post in a while! And to think I still nearly beat *$hinydragonite* to the first reponse... grumble... -.-
