Drayden Versus Iris: Past, Present, and Future! (762)

I guess I was wrong.
I originally predicted that Iris didn't want to return to Opelucid city because then Ash would learn she was the gym leader and her and Ash would have to battle together.
I honestly never expected the reason to be because she dropped out of the academy and wa afraid of what Drayden would say should she return.

It was nice to get some more background on Iris and (sort of) see how she became the person she is today.
I think their original intent was to have Iris be revealed as the gym leader but then B2W2 came out and they changed the whole thing.

I expected Iris to finally defeat Drayden,so I was disappointed to see her lose. However,I liked seeing more of her backstory, especially Iris failing to make any friends in Opelucid Academy.Haxorus' moveset was generic and boring, but at least it did put up a good fight against Excadrill.

So Ash's group reached Opelucid city and we saw how Iris had studied there after leaving her village. Iris vs Drayden was cool cuz of how Excadrill managed to tie with Haxorus. Too bad Iris still lost however.

In my mind, I had imagined that Souryuu City would resemble one of its in-game layouts with either ancient or futuristic buildings. However, it looked like any standard anime town. Shaga was sublime however, as was Iris's flashback. I had a feeling that Iris would lose to Shaga, but their match was still good.

Idk why Dragonite vs. Druddigon was so controversial. Like, Drayden was more experienced. And there is no such thing as stats and levels in the anime: Druddigon was just stronger than Dragonite naturally by experience and training. :/

So Iris was the only child at the school who could actually play like a child? When you think about it, that's almost creepy. Druddigon came perilously close to screwing the rules against Dragonite.

It's messed up how she was put down for having fun. Now I get why she left to travel on her own and didn't stay in Opelucid for long.

In hindsight, since this episode helped foreshadow Iris's future as a potential Gym Leader, I figure that this episode should've been postponed and used as her departure episode later in the saga.

I'm kinda glad they didn't force Iris into Misty's depature and had her continue her journey. While Misty had a decent send off, forcing her to run the Gym seemed rushed and cheap. I like her traveling and challenging different Dragon specialist

That's a good point I guess, although I thought that the idea of Iris running the Gym would've been carried out much better than when Kasumi became a Gym Leader.

Nice episode. Iris is quite a relatable character, particularly if you never really were into formal education and preferred living your life and exploring. Drayden is a nice guy too, understanding her rather than being offended. Frankly like Iris' character arc in Best Wishes.
