Intro
I built this team around one of the most common and powerful pokemon around, Starmie. Starmie is very versatile with it's set, but its' best arguably being the LO set. Well with further ado, the team.

121.png

First, I thought of a basis for my team, I thought of Starmie, due to it's versatile moveset.

121.png

492.png

Then, I thought of good teammates for Starmie, I chose Tran and Shaymin, making a FWG core.

121.png
485.png
492.png
445.png

Then, knowing about the immense use of dragons, decided to use Garchomp, mainly to screw with other Dragons.

Next, I needed a physical attacking pokemon since I was leaning towards the special side. He had to be bulky enough to take some hits yet not too low in attack power, also being a good Excadrill counter. I went with Conkeldurr.

Finally, I needed a lead, and even though Explosion got nerfed, I went with Metagross.

This is the current team.

The Team

376.png

Metagross @ Leftovers / Occa Berry / Lum Berry
Adamant | Clear Body
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
-Bullet Punch
-Stealth Rock
-EQ
-Ice Punch

This is pretty much the 4th Gen lead set for Metagross, albeit Leftovers over Occa / Lum Berry and Ice Punch over Explosion, due to the nerfing of Explosion and the rampant running of Dragons. It lays rocks then lives as long as possible. I'm a bit unsure about using this as my lead.

121.png

Starmie @ Life Orb
Timid | Natural Cure
252 Spe / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
-Thunderbolt
-Surf / Hydro Pump
-Rapid Spin
-Ice Beam

Life Orb Starmie. It can revenge kill like a champ due to its' high speeds, while Life Orb boosts the power of the said moves. TBolt + Ice Beam for BoltBeam. Rapid Spin to get rid of hazards and I use Surf right now even though Hydro Pump is very powerful with LO. EVs are set to make it as fast as possible, although I might put the 4 EVs in SpD in HP.

492.png

Shaymin @ Life Orb
Timid | Natural Cure
252 Spe / 252 Atk / 4 HP
-Seed Flare
-Leech Seed/Rest
-Earth Power
-Hidden Power Ice

While I could use Celebi here, I chose Shaymin instead after seeing what it can do. This is a pretty standard LO Shaymin, although I don't know if I should use HP Fire or HP Ice, due to the fact that without HP Fire, I can't take down pokemon like Scizor or Ferrothorn easily, while HP Ice helps with Dragons and possibly Gliscor, who is a thorn in the side of this team and I'm using HP Ice for Dragons and Gliscor. Trying Rest > Leech Seed.

485.png

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Modest | Flash Fire
252 Spe / 252 SpA / 4 HP
-Flame Charge
-Fire Blast
-Earth Power
-Hidden Power Ice

I used to have a more bulky Tran, with a Lava Plume / Earth Power / Substitute / Protect set, but it didn't fit well with the team, so I went to my tried and true BalloonTran set. It at least lets me survive an EQ. Flame Charge for speed boost, Earth Power for coverage and HP Ice for Ground and Dragon types. Fire Blast for main STAB.

534.png

Conkeldurr @ Flame Orb
Adamant | Guts
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
-Mach Punch
-Drain Punch
-Bulk Up
-Payback

This is my Excadrill counter and fighting type on this team. After a Bulk Up & Guts boost or even without a Bulk Up, Conkeldurr is usually ready. Mach Punch for priority, Drain Punch for STAB and recovery and Payback for coverage.

445.png

Garchomp @ Choice Scarf
Adamant/Jolly | Rough Skin
252 Spe / 252 Atk / 4 HP
-Outrage
-Fire Blast
-EQ
-Stone Edge

Typical Choice set, Scarf for the speed. Outrage & EQ are STAB, Fire Blast is for pokemon who resist the other moves. Stone Edge is coverage.

Possible Changes
  • Rotom-W over Starmie due to being very formidable in rain and quite bulky.
  • FerroCent over Starmie and Shaymin as a defensive core (e.g. SkarmBliss).
  • Replacing of Chomp for either Dragonite or Salamence.
  • Dexoys-S over Metagross (which is very unlikely)

Conclusion

I'd like to thank Bulbapedia for the sprites, Smogon for help on sets and various members of Serebii for guidance and answering my many questions. I hope you find a way to help me with this team as I've slaved over it a while. Well, rate away! ;320;

For the most part, this looks like a good team, but I don't understand why you said you were using garchomp to mess with sand teams, but you don't have sand veil as its ability?

I was going to do a full rate on this, but this team is so good I don't think I need to. But I do have two suggestions:
-Rapid Spin on Starmie for sure, it's too frail to utilize Recover effectively.
-Scarf and Fire Blast on Garchomp. Fire Blast will do more to anything it would need to revenge kill (i.e. Skarm, Ferro, Scizor, Etc.) and will free you up to use HP [Ice] on Shaymin.

The only thing I have to say is use a set of Outrage/ EQ/ Fire Blast/ Dual Chop on Garchomp. Outrage and EQ are obvious. Fire Blast will help you kill things like Skarmory and Ferrothorn faster, because of their higher defense. Fire Fang will 2HKO them at the most, Fire Blast will OHKO all of them, if it wasn't for Sturdy. Dual Chop will break subs, hitting them once and running the sub out of Hp, and hit again to the actual pokemon. I find it a lot more useful.

@ Dragonknighted - Fixed
@ Medicham's Hat - Thanks, I'll try your suggestions.

EDIT: @ShiningFire - Thanks for the suggestion, although I don't see the point in running a Fighting move alongside a Ground move, as it is redundant and they have the same coverage.

He said that Dual Chop was for breaking Subs. The Garchomp set Shining Fire said is one of the best in my opinion. I like this team...alot. I like the Metagross as an anti-lead, I mean you get what I'm ssaying. Set up Stealth Rock and Attack. A half anti-lead ya know. Then you have your FWG core, and sure FerroCent could take over ShayMie (thats right I said it), it adds a more defensive side to your team, which you don't really have. If you like the Run-and-Gun style, stick with what you have. But Ferro and Jelli always work, just a little hint hint. Lastly Conkeldurr is Conkeldurr, not much else to say about that and I already talked about Garchomp so I am done talking finally :D

I know he said it's for breaking Subs, but it is redundant coverage wise.

I'll see about that change and get back to you.

^Bumping this thread due to the help I still need. Usually I don't bump, so this will be once in a blue moon.

nice team, as suggested before fire blast would be better than dragon claw. there is no point having two dragon moves on chomp. as well, the only thing i can think of right now that your team lacks is a special wall. otherwise, it seems pretty good and can potentially pack a punch.

Shining Fire

^your going to have to explain that a little more, because Guts cancels out the attack drop of burn, and doesn't increase damage over time.

Otherwise, this is a pretty good team. MAYBE consider using Shaymin-S. It's less bulky, but it'll be better for a sweeper, which is what your using now. I already think you have enough Ice resists on your team to use this safely.

@Jordans - Thanks.

@Farfan - Flame Orb is ideal for Guts users since it cancels burn's negative effects.

@Fire - Shaymin-S is Uber from what I know at the moment.

It lays rocks then lives as long as possible. I'm a bit unsure about using this as my lead. You lack a reliable STAB move, which may be part of the problem. I have a good lead for you listed below

121.png

Starmie @ Life Orb
Timid | Natural Cure
252 Spe / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
-Thunderbolt
-Surf / Hydro Pump
-Rapid Spin
-Ice Beam

Life Orb Starmie. It can revenge kill like a champ due to its' high speeds, while Life Orb boosts the power of the said moves. TBolt + Ice Beam for BoltBeam. Rapid Spin to get rid of hazards and I use Surf right now even though Hydro Pump is very powerful with LO. EVs are set to make it as fast as possible, although I might put the 4 EVs in SpD in HP.

492.png

Shaymin @ Life Orb
Timid | Natural Cure
252 Spe / 252 Atk / 4 HP
-Seed Flare
-Rest
-Earth Power
-Hidden Power Fire / Hidden Power Ice

While I could use Celebi here, I chose Shaymin instead after seeing what it can do. This is a pretty standard LO Shaymin, although I don't know if I should use HP Fire or HP Ice, due to the fact that without HP Fire, I can't take down pokemon like Scizor or Ferrothorn easily, while HP Ice helps with Dragons and possibly Gliscor, who is a thorn in the side of this team. I personally run HP Ice on my Shaymin, because having to switch out gives Dragons a free turn to set up, and they are a nuisance to get rid of. Rest restores your health and is remedied with Natural Cure.

485.png

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Modest | Flash Fire
252 Spe / 252 SpA / 4 HP
-Flame Charge
-Lava Plume / Fire Blast
-Earth Power
-Hidden Power Ice

I used to have a more bulky Tran, with a Lava Plume / Earth Power / Substitute / Protect set, but it didn't fit well with the team, so I went to my tried and true BalloonTran set. It at least lets me survive an EQ. Roar is to pHaze, Earth Power for coverage and HP Ice for Ground and Dragon types. I am contemplating Lava Plume due to the 30% burn factor. Why are you running a semi-defensive set with no EV's invested in HP or Defense?

534.png

Conkeldurr @ Lum Berry
Adamant | Guts
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
-Mach Punch
-Drain Punch
-Bulk Up
-Payback

This is my Excadrill counter and fighting type on this team. After a Bulk Up & Guts boost or even without a Bulk Up, Conkeldurr is usually ready. Mach Punch for priority, Drain Punch for STAB and recovery and Payback for coverage.

445.png

Garchomp @ Choice Scarf
Jolly | Rough Skin
252 Spe / 252 Atk / 4 HP
-Outrage
-Dragon Claw / Fire Blast
-EQ
-Stone Edge

Typical Choice set, but not sure if I should go Scarf for the speed or Band for the raw power. Outrage & EQ are STAB, Dragon Claw is backup but Fire Blast is viable too.

Okay, starting from the bottom up, ScarfChomp should always be Jolly, as this lets it outspeed +2 Adamant Cloyster and Ludicolo in the Rain. The residual damage from the Flame Orb is the downfall of many a Conkeldurr, especially with entry hazards on the field, so instead I would recommend the use of a Lum Berry so you can set up on the likes of Chansey, Jellicent, etc... Your Heatran had an odd set at first. Why run Lava Plume and Roar on an offensively EV'd Heatran? You should run Flame Charge and Fire Blast to give it the potential it has as a sweeper. I found out through experience that Shaymin and Rest work great together, as rest gives a full recovery and is negated of its sleeping effect via Natural Cure. Starmie looks good, standard BoltBeamer. As for your Metagross, I agree when you say it doesn't really work out. I would recommend this pokemon for you, because your team greatly appreciates entry hazards.

Deoxys-E @ Focus Sash
Nature: Timid
Ability: Pressure
EV's: 252 Hp, 252 Spe, 4 Sp. Atk,
-Stealth Rock
-Spikes
-Taunt
-Psychic

Say hello to the fastest user of Spikes and Stealth Rock in the entire game! So long as the opponent doesn't have a priority move or doesn't bring you down to your sash, you are guaranteed to get up Stealth Rock and one layer of Spikes. Magic Guard can be used over Taunt for things like Thundurus, but Forretress is guaranteed to set up on you. Psychic makes sure you aren't Taunt bait.

Yeah, I've been meaning to fix Tran. Thank you.

Ok, I'll fix Chomp.

I'm not sure, without HP Fire, I can't take care of Scizor and similar pokes but HP Ice is helpful. I'm still experimenting with them but I'll make my mind up as soon as possible. I'll see about Rest.

Well I'm not sure about losing Metagross, as he is quite useful and without him, I would have an imbalance with the Special to Physical ratio.

W/o Flame Orb, Guts would have no purpose and GutsDurr is his best set.
