Dub Title Thread

I’m finding it difficult to watch, mainly because it’s frustrating me when Misty speaks. Really bad decision to have misty and May played by the same voice actress if she’s not going to change her voice to differentiate. Every time misty speaks I think of May.
Makes me think if they ever appear in the future what will they when they’re in the same episode.
Also gutted they lost some of the soundtrack, Dragonite Takes Flight in particular, I’m not all the way through the movie yet but if they scrap tears of life or brother my brother then it’ll be a complete let down

I think they mostly used the original soundtrack from the Japanese version, which ill take over Goldfarb's unfitting elevator music.

Also Misty's new va isn't that very good. Its making me wish for someone to somehow edit in Rachel Lillis' Misty from the first movie over Michele Knotz' Misty someone PLEASE do that

- The Japanese BGM music has been kept as is.

Probably won't get around to watching the movie for a couple of weeks, could you explain this further to me. When you say that, was the original Japanese music true to original version of the English movie's music? Or was the music completely different from the dub's music in the original?

If it is completely different, then that sucks. I usually am neutral when it comes to the Japanese vs. dub music, not really caring one way or another, but if they didn't try to make the music sound like the original dub, then they just failed.

>No "Brother my Brother"
Welp. Expected, but disappointed.

Very disappointing.

And I hear the dub script is actually a faithful translation... even for Team Rocket's lines. Even more unexpected but absolutely welcome.

And by that do you mean the lines are completely different from the original dub's lines? With the exception of the few mistakes that were made (like misidentifying Pokémon), I would argue that is not a good thing. I don't care which original version you think is better, if the point of this movie is to remake the original, then the English version should be staying true to the original English version that everyone grew up with.

Well I see we are at an impass here because my perspective has always been that literally the best thing this movie could possibly do, was to provide a more accurate dub of MSB. People who like the 4Kids version of the story can always go back and just... watch the 4Kids version. The fact that there now exists a dub of it that doesn't claim that Mewtwo is actively plotting to destroy the world is, from where I'm standing, a very good thing.

The Japanese soundtrack was, for the most part, the exact same music that was in the original Japanese version of the first movie, albeit extended and with a bunch of new stuff thrown in to match how literally everything takes longer in this version. Though I feel like it's kind of bizarre to have the Totem battle theme from Sun & Moon playing in this very direct remake of a Gen 1 movie... that is what happened. The 4Kids dub of Mewtwo Strikes Back replaced literally all the music except for Team Rocket's theme, as far as I'm aware. So yeah, if you want to hear nostalgic tunes from the 4Kids dub... Outside of the opening theme, there's absolutely none of that here.

While it's nice that the English dub kept the original japanese script, they did retain a few popular 4Kids lines here and there. So it's a shame to see they didn't include the meowth talking about equality scene and instead inserted them talking about the moon

So instead of having a philosophical discussion over how the clone Pokemon share a world with their originals, clone Meowth just......wonders if there will be a full moon that night. That doesn't make sense. As for the "Pokemon weren't meant to fight. Not like this." line, i never saw this as hypocritical to Pokemon's message. Yes, Pokemon trained by humans do fight for sport, but it's never to the death, as it would be here if it wasn't stopped.

I’m glad they didn’t try to re-do what 4kids did because essentially what 4kids did was try to pass Pokémon as a product of themselves to American audiences (hence all the changes) instead of sticking to and respecting the original anime source. I never liked when the dub changed too many things because then it just leaves confusion since it isn’t canon to the original source material.
Too bad TPCI is a mediocre at best dubbing company.

I always found Nyasu's dub line during that scene to be a little contrived since Nyasu in the dub wasn't meant to be so philosophical, and that bit of dialogue seemed like it would've been a better fit for his original Japanese counterpart.

Why is the M22 discussion thread not up yet? Well, whatever.

Dub pros:
— The script is close to the original Japanese version for the most part
— The Japanese BGM is completely left intact. Good to know keeping the music in the previous movie wasn't an one-time thing.
— No cringy "Brother My Broooother" song during the big battle royal.
— Getting Dan Green to voice Mewtwo.

Dub cons:

— Misty's dub voice. Whenever she spoke I heard May speaking, not Misty. They should've hired someone who sounds closer to her old VA.

That aside, the MSBE dub is much, much better than the MSB dub in many ways.

Actually, 4kids made their own version of the Team Rocket theme instead of keeping the one used in the Japanese version.

Well I was referring to the five seconds or so of it when they start their introduction out on the boat before immediately getting cut off by being hit by a wave... But yeah, that also happened. Which has got to be one of the biggest "Why even." moments of the entire dub. Why would they cut the original soundtrack just to re-record their own version of the exact same composition? While at the same time leaving one Japanese track in elsewhere?

Tbh if they plan on bringing Misty back more often I’m going to have to just stick to the sub. It’s like the VA isn’t even trying to make her sound different from May

I've always disliked Kasumi's dub voice from the post-4Kids era. I know that the odds of her original voice actress returning are slim to none, but I feel that it would be better to just recast her at this point to save us the dread of Michele Knotz voicing her. I don't dislike her as a voice actress in general since I think she's great at voicing Haruka and Musashi, but her Kasumi voice is very grating.

Hopeful for Gen 8
Why do the females in the dub sound so high pitched? No kid is sounds like that. Even Jessie who is an adult in her 20s sounds super high. And the weird part is the person in charge is from the 4kids era which never seemed to make the girls sound that bad.
