EE's Secret Base Training Tips

This guide is intended to present examples of how you can utilize secret bases to take advantage of your training needs, so the following shall be covered in this topic:

1. raising up pokemon faster than having to go through the elite 4 constantly
2. accurate EV training
3. tips on smeargle sketching

Before we begin, let's cover some basics:

What is a secret base?

A secret base is like a private home you can setup in certain caves or bushes available in ruby, sapphire or emerald games only.

Serebii has picturial examples in this link:
http://www.serebii.net/pokemon_advance/base/

How do I get a secret base?

Have a pokémon in your party that knows Secret Power (TM43) to open it.

How can I battle other secret bases?

Mix records in pokemon center with other game, and the pokemon in party will be the ones at time of mixing records.
WhiteWizard42 said:
you can mix records before beating the E4, you just can't battle before beating the E4.

How often can I battle?

After each time mixing records, you can battle one time per day in game. To battle more than once per day, re-mix records before the next battle.

here are things that may help in proper setup:

Ruby/Sapphire:
- methods of initial leveling up in order to prepare certain bases takes lots of time at first. There are 2 glitches worth noting as it requires leaving the target pokemon in daycare for this to work:

1. mudslide trick: in the upper part of the desert on route 111, there's a mudslide which requires using a mach bike to get up. For this glitch to work, use an acro bike and when you get to the bottom of the mudslide, use an object to hold down the up button. After about 6-8 hours, your pokemon should gain 100000 exp points.

2. ocean glitch: in the ocean current approximately 3/4 of the way between Pacificdog town & slateport and right before the path to the sealed chamber, there is a shallow island
MetalMario said:
The whole point of the Ocean glitch is that it's a glitch. There's a tile on that route with its movement type set to land but still has the current pushing effect, so you can use the Mach Bike and run towards it, getting pushed back repeatedly.

The tile is positioned as in this picture:
oceanglitch.png
IMHO, the ocean glitch seems better since a mach bike works rather than requiring an acro bike.

- any secret bases that can be used

FireRed / LeafGrean:

- evolution stones are available at a cost
- lucky egg on chansey at 5% chance (extremely hard to capture)

Pokemon XD:

- lucky egg quest after defeating the game

Pokemon Box:

- easiest way to transport from one game to another, and to view stats

1. raising up pokemon faster than having to go through the elite 4 constantly

The following pokemon can yield the easiest or fastest way of leveling up:

gardevoir (only knows memento)

normal exp: 4456
1 boosted exp: 6684
2 boosted exp: 10026
Maximum points expected = 10026 * 6 = 60156

latios (only knows memento)

normal exp: 4521
1 boosted exp: 6781
2 boosted exp: 10171
Maximum points expected = 10171 * 6 = 61026

Note: gardevoir or latios' memento causes itself to faint and reduces your pokemon's attack and sp.atk by 2 points and by the time you face the 4th gardevoir or latios, its memento will fail, so you may have to switch back and forth with another pokemon or use an attack or sp.atk raising move like swords dance, calm mind, haze, dragon dance, curse, etc... clear body instantly works well here too.

Now that cloning in emerald is possible. Go ahead and clone a level 100 latios, use a heart scale or mushrooms to re-learn memento, and clone until you have a party of 6 latios available.

Also, check out this 9:05 minute video from youtube.com which shows a pokemon starting at level 5 and leveling up through 2 separate gardevoir bases.

chansey or blissey (only knows tail whip)

normal exp: 5463
1 boosted exp: 8194
2 boosted exp: 12291
Maximum points expected = 12291 * 6 = 73746

Note: physical attack, attack boosting moves, and status inflictions like toxic, curse (ghost), leech seed, & will-o-wisp work well here. I attempted to record a video with skitty battling 6 level 100 blisseys, but the video exceeded the 10 minute limit, so overall, going through 2 gardevoir/latios bases is faster than 1 chansey/blissey base.

Also worth noting is the most points expected by having let's say a traded level 92 starmie holding a lucky egg going through the advanced elite 4 in FR/LG comes out to 162092 which is a little more than 2 trips to the chansey/blissey base, but only works with a special attacker like starmie, kyogre and mewtwo at around level 90 and above.

2. accurate EV training

HP
======================
Azumarill : capture marill while surfing in lakes, evolve at level 18, retain only "Tail Whip" while deleting all other moves.

Exploud : capture loudred in Victory Road or Desert Underpass and retain any of the following moves only: Howl, Screech, Sleep Talk.

Wigglytuff: capture jigglypuff in FR/LG on route 3 preferably at level 3, evolve with moon stone, use mushrooms or heart scale to learn "Defense Curl" delete "sing, clone for 5 more.

other pokemon that yield 3 points: Celebi, Clefable, Jirachi, Mew, Nidoqueen, Slaking, Walrein

Attack
======================
Machamp : capture machop on jagged pass or fiery path in ruby/sapphire/emerald, evolve and trade, retain only the moves leer, focus energy or foresight.

Shiftry : capture nuzleaf on route 114 in ruby or seedot outbreak on route 117 in emerald, evolve, retain only the move "Growth"

Victreebel : capture weepinbel in LG on route 13, 14, 15, use mushrooms to re-learn "Growth", evolve, then delete all other moves

other pokemon that yield 3 points: Blaziken, Dragonite, Groudon, Nidoking, Salamence, Swampert, Tyranitar

Defense
======================
Golem : capture graveler in caves and Team Magma's hideout in emerald, evolve by trade, retain only the move "Selfdestruct" as I only recommend this for ghost pokemon like dusclops.

Poliwrath : capture L20 poliwhirl while fishing in ponds in FR/LG, evolve with water stone, use emerald move tutor for "snore" and delete all other moves.

other pokemon that yield 3 points: Aggron, Metagross, Regirock

Sp. Attack
======================
Alakazam : Breed or purchase abra at Celadon Game corner, evolve and trade at level 16, retain only "Teleport"

Ampharos : Capture mareep in emerald safari zone with a static pokemon in lead, evolve and retain only "Cotton Spore"

Beautifly : Capture or breed wurmple in R/S/E, evolves randomly into dustox or beautifly, retain only "String Shot"

Gardevoir : Evolve at level 31 and retain the move "Teleport". For the special case with "Memento", breed with koffing/weezing, grimer/muk or inherited descendant, evolve at level 31, then after it would learns "imprison" at level 33, move the "Memento" move to the bottom slot so it will not get overwritten by newer moves (thanks MetalMario) and leave in daycare while doing the mudslide trick or the ocean glitch in R/S, delete all other moves once it reaches level 100.

Latios : Level up to 100 normally, clone the latios and have it re-learn memento while deleting all other moves, then clone 5 more.

Vileplume : Capture gloom on route 13, 14, 15 in FR/LG or left of Lilycove in R/S/E, use heart scale or mushrooms for "Sweet Scent", delete all other moves

other pokemon that yield 3 points: Charizard, Gengar, Kyogre, Mewtwo, Moltres, Typhlosion, Zapdos

Sp. Defense
======================
Dustox : capture or breed wurmple in R/S/E, evolves randomly into dustox or beautifly, retain only "String Shot"

Ludicolo : breed with oddish to learn "sweet scent", evolve at level 14 and retain only that move.

other pokemon that yield 3 points: Articuno, Bellossom, Blastoise, Ho-oh, Latias, Lugia, Politoed, Regice, Slowking

Speed
======================
Jumpluff : capture or breed 6 hoppips, raise until they evolve into jumpluff at level 27, retain only "splash" or "Tail Whip"

Raichu : Use a static pokemon in lead to attract electric pokemon in emerald like pikachu in the R/S/E safari zone, capture 6, evolve into raichu with thunderstone, use heart scale in R/S/E or mushrooms in FR/LG to re-learn "Tail Whip", or capture level 3 pikachu in viridian forest in FR/LG and immediately evolve into raichu, and learn "Tail Whip" while deleting all other moves, clone for 5 more.

Pidgeot : capture pidgeotto on island 5 in FR/LG, evolve at next level into pidgeot and retain only "agility" while deleting other moves (thanks The Emerald King).

Other pokemon that yield 3 points: Crobat, Sceptile

Lastly, let's compare with EV points yielded when doing the elite 4:
WhiteWizard42 said:
Dusclops gives 1 Def, 2 SDef

so the total for beating the emerald league is:

15 HP/22 ATK/5 Def/2 SAtk/15 SDEF/2 Spd

and for R/S, change sidney's crawdaunt into a sharpedo (gives the same EVs), drake's kingdra into flygon (+2 speed, -1 SAtk, -1 SDef), and wallace's team into steven's (which gives 2 Atk/8 Def/4 SDef), and you get:

11 HP/22 Atk/13 Def/1 SAtk/10 SDef/4 Spd
So if you need to remove any of the unwanted EVs, in Emerald you will need to use:
#21 Pomeg Berries for removing up to 10 HP points each
#22 Kelpsy Berries for removing up to 10 Attack points each
#23 Qualot Berries for removing up to 10 Defense points each
#24 Hondew Berries for removing up to 10 Sp.atk points each
#25 Grepa Berries for removing up to 10 Sp.def points each
#26 Tamato Berries for removing up to 10 Speed points each

3. tips on smeargle sketching

anything that smeargle can sketch while in a secret base battle can be permanently kept after the battle. Here are some things that can further assist with smeargle sketchings:

1. breed weak pokemon to learn a specific move, then use move deleter to remove all other moves, so you can have:
- girafarig that knows earthquake
- torchic that knows rock slide
- aipom that knows focus punch
- yanma that knows reversal

since smeargle is a normal type and cannot be affected by ghost moves, you can possibly use a level 100 shedinja that only knows shadow ball, sketch it and shadow ball it back for a maximum of 4581 exp points if holding lucky egg and as traded pokemon. Also, smeargle cannot be confused. You may also let it learn a non-attacking move first so it won't have to waste a sketch right away, or continue to switch it in if strong enough.

2. you can get more than one sketch with a freshly hatched level 5 smeargle as follows:
- while holding exp.share, have a stronger pokemon defeat a wild L40 hariyama and a L40 lairon. By this point, smeargle should be at level 10 with 5 exp points away from level 11.
- you can also get a third sketch in where smeargle holds a lucky egg and faces a L100 gardevoir that uses memento.

3. tricks to acquiring certain moves:
- substitute: have a false swiper come in first, then switch in smeargle
- baton pass: nobody else to pass to
- spore: hold a chesto berry at least

Another quicker way to sketch smeargle moves is as following created in a recent topic by Raiburuto:
You can only do this on Emerald...

1. Get a pokemon with a move you want to have your Smeagle learn on your team.

2. Go to the Fossil Maniac's house after the Elite 4 and enter the cave at the end.

3. Make your pokemon with the move battle a ditto.

4. When Ditto transforms, switch out your Smeagle and wait for the Ditto to use the move you want Smeagle to learn and then use Sketch.

5. You sould now have a Smeagle with the move, do this repeatedly with other pokemon until your Smeagle has the move set that you want.

P.S. This will not work if you want your Smeagle to learn Transform.

-Raiburuto ;376;
Besides not having to mix records this way, the nice thing about this trick is that it is located next to Fallarbor where the move tutor requiring heart scale resides so you can re-learn sketch as many times as necessary; however I recommend smeargle to be at higher than level 50 in order to learn certain attacking moves.

While this guide may not be complete at this time, please let me know anything else I should include or make more clear. I hope this helps with your training.

Good job, Evan!

Here are a few things I'd like to mention, from my experience in constructing training bases:

1. It helps if you have a game you're willing to restart now and then. I've already constructed three bases (Azumarill, Gardevoir, Blissey) using my one Emerald cart, which I've been restarting for the sake of obtaining a complete set of Johto starters.

2. Remember to Register any bases you want to hang on to. (Use the PC inside the base to do so.) Especially if the base originated on a save file you've since reset, you'll want to Register them to keep them from vanishing into oblivion. There's a max (16, I believe) number of Bases your game can store before it begins recycling. A Registered base is never recycled.

3. A faster way to keep the desired moves (Memento, for instance) from being lost in the Daycare is to switch them to the bottom slot. Check an online Pokédex to find which level the Pokémon you're raising learns its fourth last move. You may want to train it to that level manually (using a Secret Base, for instance; how's that for circular logic? :p) before sentencing it to life in the Daycare. Otherwise, you'll need to check up on it, now and then, to keep it from losing the desired move.

4. It takes very little time on the ocean currents to max a Chansey's happiness. Evolving the first two will be difficult, but the other four can be evolved very easily (L6-7) if you keep them in your party while on the currents.

5. I find that Secret Bases are of more use for early, bulk Exp than for EV training, as you can only use them once per day. At 72 points per base (if holding Macho Brace+Pokérus), that's 3.5 days (4) to max one stat. I prefer the OHKO/PP counting method, with which I can complete EV training in a little over an hour. This method requires that you have a good number of levels on the wild Pokémon in order to OHKO them without fail, so leading off with a Secret Base trip can be quite useful for gaining these levels. A single trip to the Gardevoir Base (traded; I do not have Lucky Egg) can bring a newly hatched Chikorita from L5 to L35.

Very cool EE. But instead of Jumpluff's, I raise pidgeots from the pidgeotos (sp) on Five Island. Just keep agility.

Placing move to save on bottom works like a charm, edited. Thanks MetalMario.

added, almost forgot about pidgeot's agility, thanks Emerald King.

Good job,Expert Evan!

Today I did my Sp.Attack Base.

3 Latios's with Memento only
2 Zapdos's with Agility only
1 Moltres with Agility only

The Latios's are at Lv 40.
Zapdos and Moltres are at Lv 50

I'm not really interested in raising them to Lv 100.

Since I started over my other Emerald game,I'll make another Ev Base.

Great job, Expert Evan!
I have 3 Lv 100 Gardevoir bases. I find them better than Blissey bases, because if you have, say, a Lv 5 Pokemon, you can train it only in the Gardevoir base. It can't faint a Lv 100 Blissey by itself, but Gardevoir uses Memento. Even if the Blisseys give more Exp, I like Memento Gardies more.
Also, I get Pokemon from other games when possible so they gain boosted Exp.

@Expert Evan / Or anyone else:

I have no secret bases so far, but the idea seems good enough to try it out. But I can see problems coming already, since you can only built one secret base per game can't you? So how did you do that, since i recall hearing you say that you can only mix records once per day or? And lets say i have to wait a day.. built a new base at my Ruby cardridge and then again trade with my emerald where i had my first exchange secret base from ruby as well. Does the old one stay as well or does it vanish because of the same id number?

Can you explain more specific maybe how you did all those bases or answer my questions,
Kind Regards.

Expert Evan

Old Fogey
To create or change location of a secret base, have a pokemon in your party that knows secret power. Once a secret base, and only one per cartridge, it can be accessible by another cartridge when mixing records so long as it is in a different location than the one you are mixing records with. The pokemon that are in secret base battles are the ones in the party at the time of mixing records. So my emerald game can have 6 blisseys while my sapphire game can have 6 gardevoirs. In the emerald, I can enter the sapphire secret base and face the sapphire trainer's 6 gardevoirs with pokemon of your choice. Likewise in sapphire, I can enter the emerald secret base and use any pokemon to face emerald trainer's 6 blisseys. This stay in effect at least once per day until the next time both games mix records together.

I for one have 3 different secret base locations between my ruby, sapphire & emerald games as they are in the different caves along route 118, so from my emerald game, I can enter the ruby base in the upper side of the shore, then enter the sapphire base in the lower side of the shore.

Expert Evan

Old Fogey
If were talking about creating different base locations from one game (ruby), it will only save the last location created which will be Base B.

Fish Sticks said:
Sure I get that.

But you can't make Base A at lets route 118 in your Ruby game. Mix records with Emerald so you have Base A aswell on Emerald. A day later you create Base B on ruby and mix records again with Emerald. You won't have both Base A en B then, do you?
The new location of the Ruby base will appear in Emerald and the older base will disappear from Emerald. As long as you are still playing from the same save file, you can only have one base location mixed into any other game at any one time. So, you could mix your Ruby base into an Emerald game and a Sapphire game, and as many other games as you like, but your Secret Base can only appear once in each of those games. In order to mix several bases into a single game, you'll need to restart your Ruby game, get far enough to make a Secret Base in a new location, and mix records with Emerald again. I've managed to put 15 Secret Bases into my Sapphire game doing this. Also, any bases that have already been mixed into your Emerald game will show up in your Ruby game when you mix records, so you can have a duplicate of each base you make.

I recently added that ampharos for special attack can retain cotton spore, just watch out for its static ability similar to raichu. Also, ludicolo can learn sweet scent as an egg move as it can evolve at level 14.

Sorry, but I'm not quite sure what you mean by boosted exp... is that just saying how you gain more exp from it when it's on a higher level or is there something else involved with how much exp is gained?

Also, if I raise my team of 6 gardeviors in Ruby, mix records with Emerald with that team, then I trade the team too my Emerald version and start a new game in Ruby, then I get far enough in Ruby to trade and send over the gardeviors and have like 1 of them holding a sectret power TM and I make a new secret base in the nearest location that hasn't already been use and mix records with that same exact team of Gardeviors, would anything happen too the previous base containing those same Gardevior because they have the same original Trainer or anything like that?

boosted EXP refers to the fact that a pokemon that is either traded or holding a lucky egg gets 1.5 times as much EXP. a traded pokemon that's holding a lucky egg gets 2.25 as much.

they won't have the same original trainer, since the new ruby save will have a different ID#, and probably name.

this is nothing to do with the thread, but i'll answer anyway: it's not based on time, it's based on number of steps. once you take 500 steps, you're yanked out of the safari zone.

don't use a mudslide in the safari zone.

fly to fortree, go south along route 119 (weather instutite route), staying to the left until you get to a mudslide. use that one instead. and make sure you have an acro bike.
