Every time I play FR or LG I always pick Charmander (simply because it is the best). After you beat Brock a lot of trainers with Ekans start to show up. This is where everything goes wrong. If I ever attack an Ekans with a fire move, and it survives, it always uses poison sting and poisons me. This curse has never failed.

Yes, Ekans can poison, big deal. Bring some antidotes if you're totally paranoid ;). Or pick bulbasaur, he can't be poisoned and is the best kanto starter by far.

it's just a coincidence. Like my shroomish that always missed at least once in every battle it ever fought until it evolved into Breloom~
