    (suitable for all)

So hi everyone. This is my first time writing a fan fic and i decided to do it a little differently. I decided to write about a Pokemon from a real world Encyclopaedic perspective.
Any constructive criticism is welcome and if you enjoy it and want more feel free to request a pokemon i right about and feel free to write an entry yourself. I only request that you let me know which pokemon you are writing about so i can show its being done. You are free to write about any pokemon you like except those under construction, please look at the list before submitting. Thanks. So be nice and i hope you enjoy it. Thanks!

DISCLAMER:This is not meant to be the 'official' tell-all, end all explanation, just one writer's theories. These theories may be used for fanfiction, but they shouldn't be consitered the only theories. Please don't think you're "wrong" if what you think does not agree with what this writer has written here and please dont post to say that a certain writer is wrong because it is purely the writers perception. Post if you wish to voice your own perception but please dont post to say its completely wrong.

    RULES:1 Keep them tasteful.

    2. I will only reserve to pokemon lines for one person at any time. Once one has been submitted they may reserve another line. Only 4 at once. Otherwise it may be a long time before some reserved lines get finished and other people may wish to write about a particular pokemon.

3.Anyone can write an entry-just let me know please.

4.Please try to keep anime and certain game references to a minimum. This is a real world view on Pokemon written as an encyclopaedia. Encyclopaedia's do not mention everyday people. Anime=/=real life.

5.Do not compare Pokemon to real life animals. For example do not compare Krabby/Kingler to a crab. We are writing from the point of view that only Pokemon exist and not real animals. How can you compare a Pokemon to something that does not exist?

    6. There is a 2 week limit of reservation. If you havent completed the article in the two weeks simply post to say so and the time will be extended by another 2 weeks. As long as you post to say you need more time its no problem.

7.Articles should be at least a page and a quater in Word. Any less and you simply dont have enough information.

    Have fun!

    Encyclopeadia of Pokemon

do you mean is it ok if other people write about a pokemon and post it here or....?

I'm enjoying it. I love scientific looks at pokemon :) However, I have a few little issues:

A bulbasaur or ivysaur would never need "mother's milk" because only mammals nurse their young, and they'd be having eggs, not live young (also, canonically, all pokemon lay eggs. The mammals are all monotremes). Most reptilian pokemon, I can imagine, wouldn't do much in the way of raising their children in the first place, as most do not stay with their eggs (some dinosaurs did, however, but did not do much to actively raise the children once they were hatched).

Be careful with scientitic names. The first one reflects a genus - for example, the genus for a dog is Canis. More than just dogs are in the Canus genus, however, and, keeping that in mind, I'd expect to see closely related species of pokemon also sharing a genus (not counting evolutions) - for example, I can't picture pikachu, plusle and minun NOT being in the same genus (I put them in the genus Sciurus, and Pachirisu in the genus Tamiasciurus, a closely related subgenus).

I must commend you, however, for not putting "evolutions" (which aren't truely different creatures in the first place, in my opinion - just pokemon possess an abilitiy to rapidly grow to a mature state) as different species.

How are you going to cover stone-evolved pokemon? For example, the first one you'd come to is raichu. A raichu is not a creature that would commonly occur in the wild. In order to evolve, a pikachu needs contact with a thunderstone, and the evolution stones, as a whole, tend to be far underground. What few wild raichu there are would be ones who escaped their trainers, or were abandoned. Thus, an encyclopedia would have little information on how they function in the wild (as ones untainted by human contact would be extremely rare, if they existed at all), but would have to base its ideas on watching raichu in capitivity. A "wild" study would focus more on pichu, and those of them who evolved into pikachu. Item evolved pokemon would have no chance of existing in the wild naturally.

Very realistic reading and well thought. I've been writing something (concidentally) extremely similar to this, and it's interesting how the same theme can yeild different results :)

thats true i didnt thinkof that...mistake on my part...i will correct it soon...thanks for saying

a fair point....but to be honest i wasnt delving to far into the latin names of the pokemon...but its a good point..so maybe you could help me with this if i get stuck...if i pm you or something?

i dont quite know yet...your advice sounds nice and would put up a nice challenge...although i might just disregard the whole stone thing...i think i will try both ways and see which one fits best and which one i like best...your opinion on that when it comes would be great...

cool id be intrested to see your work...maybe we could find a way to incorporate both our works into the same piece or something? 'Two different scientific views on pokemon' something like that?

if you want to request thats fine...otherwise i will just go in order...and its absoloutly fine by me and would be great if you want to contribute...i will even credit you :) However i would like to see the piece before i add it to the encyclopaedia, just to see if it fits in, nothings wrong etc...so sure!! just let me know which pokemon you do!

geez long post...blastoise and butterfree up next..thanks for you opinons!

EDIT:fixed the Bulbasaur/milk problem, and modified Venusaurs latin name.

NOTE: (I really have nothing else to do right now so i went ahead and did butterfree...i thought i would put this in a new box as the top one is becoming so long...not much to say except its latin name was derived from the Pieris genus and the Japanese name for Butterfree Batafuri (i think thats it anyway))

    Butterfree (Pieris batafuri)
    Height: 3’07’’ Weight: 70.5 lbs

Butterfree is a medium sized bug pokemon that usually live to be about 20 years old with females being larger than the males. They have elongated purple bodies with a pair of blue arms and legs. A Butterfree’s is right on top its body so much so that it looks like it does not have a neck, when in fact it does. It has bright red eyes and a pair of antenna protruding from the top of its head. Its wings are quite large and are predominantly white with black striped markings.

Butterfree are very common pokemon in woods and forests. A Butterfree spends its time during the day collecting and eating the nectar from flowers. Solitary unless trying to attract a mate, they gather in groups in the evenings to huddle together and sleep in trees and hollows, going separate ways in the morning each day. Butterfree’s wings have a layer of toxic dust on which serves several purposes. The first reason being to repel predators as the dust is toxic and can cause a rash and sometimes even poisoning if ingested. A second reason is to make its wings water repellent. Because of this Butterfree’s are able to gather food even in the rain. Because of this ability to fly in rain Butterfree’s are able to stay active during the winter as they can search for scarce food without the risk of losing its ability of flight. A Butterfree’s toxic dust also helps in attracting a mate. The dust glitters and shines in the sun causing an even more attractive appeal in finding the right mate.

Butterfree do not mate for life; in fact once mating is over the males go back to finding food. The females lay there eggs in a tree hollow or under the leaves of a tree always above the ground. The female then has no further part in rearing the young either. When a Butterfree egg hatches the young are commonly referred to as a Caterpie. The Caterpie are exceptionally different in appearance than the Butterfree. They are only one foot long and green all over with a yellow underbelly and a red Y shaped antenna on its head. Its behaviour is also radically different. It spends all its waking time consuming leaves from trees and plant. It can also release a putrid scent from its antenna as a defence mechanism. After a Caterpie has grown significantly it changes in appearance once again. It wraps its self in silk which hardens and becomes a crescent shaped green cocoon. The bug is commonly referred to as a Metapod in this stage. A Metapod cannot move much but its cocoon is extremely hard so it is not much of a problem. After a minimum of 6 months as a Metapod this pokemon finally changes into a Butterfree.

While Butterfree are welcomed by farmers due to their pollination habits, Caterpie are considered pests due to the fact that they eat almost all kinds of vegetation. However an infestation of Caterpie could be considered a blessing in disguise as sooner or later with patience they will become Butterfree.

    Beedrill (Vespa supia)
    Height: 3’03’’ Weight: 65 lbs

Beedrill is a medium sized bug pokemon usually living to about 30 years with females being larger than the males. Beedrill’s body is separated into three sections; its head, chest region called a thorax and its bottom half called an abdomen. A Beedrill’s abdomen is largely swollen due to the large amounts of poison it stores inside it abdomen that is then secreted out of a large stinger protruding from it abdomen. A Beedrill has four appendages. Its forearms have developed into large stingers also and so it is extremely hard for a Beedrill to use its forelegs for other activities. A Beedrill also has two pairs of translucent wings enabling it to fly. In fact a Beedrill is rarely if ever seen walking. It has large red eyes and is coloured yellow with black stripes along its abdomen. Its arms, legs and antennae are also black with its forearm stingers coloured white.

Beedrill are a common sight in woods and forests. Beedrill live in large communities in their home which is referred to as a hive. Usually the hive has only one egg producing female with the males working for her non-stop. The males either take care of the eggs or collect nectar to produce food for the hive. Female Beedrill that have matured leave the hive and find a suitable place to start a hive of their own, it is during this time that most female Beedrill are encountered. Beedrill are extremely territorial and often attack on sight if an intruder is within the hives territory or is a threat to the hives well being. Despite this Beedrill hives are often attacked by Ursaring which are looking for the honey which is made from nectar deep within the hive.

When a baby Beedrill hatches from an egg its appearance is totally different from that of a Beedrill and thus is commonly referred to as a Weedle. A Weedle is approximately one foot long with its body divided into many segments with a red foot in each segment. Weedle’s have a large red nose and a large stinger on their head as well as on their tail. Beedrill are different from other kinds of hornets as they allow the Weedle’s to leave the hive and gorge on the leaves of trees and bushes surrounding the hive. Because of this Beedrill sentries are posted to look after the young Weedle. However often a Weedle may leave the vicinity of the hive without the Beedrill noticing, even though Weedle are extremely capable of taking care of themselves. When a Weedle has gorged itself enough it then uses its mucus to create a shell completely around itself inside it begins its metamorphosis. In this stage the young are commonly referred to as Kakuna. Kakuna semi resembles a Beedrill’s body, without wings or appendages or the swollen abdomen. Kakuna are almost completely immobile, however they can extend a stinger to protect itself. During this stage the Kakuna are returned back inside the hive. After a minimum of six months a Kakuna develops into a fully grown Beedrill.

Beedrill are very aggressive, even towards humans. Any person travelling in woods should try their best to avoid Beedrill, especially if the Beedrill is hurt and alone as then it becomes even more aggressive and may even attack with disregard for its own life. This is known as the Swarm effect. Beedrill are regarded as pests, so much so that there are professionals trained to get rid of an infestation in or near a house.

Hi again...so any feed back? good? bad? too boring? and any requests anyone? anyone want to write an article also? thanks!

    Pidgeot (Falco pijotto)
    Height:4'11" Weight: 87.1 lbs

Pidgeot is a predatory bird. It has an aerodynamic body shape, which allows it to fly up to the astonishing speed of Mach 2 and makes it capable of soaring to an altitude of 3300 feet. It also helps it to catch its prey. Its prey are mainly Magikarp, whom they catch by swooping down into the water and catching them with their razor sharp talons.

Pidgeot has a wonderfully beautiful pale yellow and red orange crest adorning its head. Also, the glossy feathers of Pidgeot has been described as dazzling, and some trainers chose to train it just because of its elegance and beauty. Its crest is complemented by its red orange tail.

When against foes, it can be rather intimidating. The black stripes behind its eyes add to this effect. Also, it has been known to spread its huge wings wide to further frighten its opponent. Flapping these wings with their powerful chest muscles, Pidgeot can whip up gusts of wind similar to tornadoes.

Young Pidgeot are known as Pidgeys. Pidgeots usually take care of the Pidgey until they grow up intoo Pidgeottos. Unlike Pidgeot, it is quite docile and doesn't like to fight much. However, that does not mean that it can't protect itself. Pidgey, upon attack, have been known to either blow up a small Whirlwind to blow foes away or to kick up a Sand Attack to blind the enemy. It lives in forest and grassy areas, and has an immensely good sense of direction. Unlike Pidgeot, it does not feed on Magikarp, but on Caterpie, Weedle and Wurmple.

When in the middle stage of development, Pidgeots are known as Pidgeottos. In this stage, Pidgeotto shares more similiarities with Pidgeot. It also has a beautiful crest on its head, but it is much shorter than Pidgeot's. It is an extremely territorial Pokemon, and will severely punish anyone who trespasses. It flies about in circular patterns when hunting, and has great eyesight too. It can effortlessly spot prey on the ground no matter how high it flies and will easily catch the prey and bring it back to its nest. Examples of prey include Magikarp and Exeggcute.

Regarding latin names, the genus should be capitalized while the species name should not. Also, the latin name should be italicized.

Charizard's latin name - Lizardon Saurus

    becomes this...

Charizard's latin name - Lizardon saurus

I quite like this idea - a more in-depth pokedex. And it would make a good database to use as a platform for fics.

As for the formatting, I think you should probably add an index to the first post, so that when this gets really long, readers can find all the entries.

    I'd love to contribute. : )

Also, for the entries, could you add paragraphs? I think you put them in WORD, but tab doesn't work on the forums, so the entry is all clumped together.

I'll be glad to work on the Hoenn pokemon.

Sorry for taking so long to reply >.> I've not had much internet access for the past week...

Anyway, I'd be glad to contribute as well :) I have parts for the electric rodents written up from my other project (pichu/pikachu/raichu, plusle/minun and pachirisu), and am currently working on eevee and its evolutions. Also, you can PM me if you like; it's fine :)

Dont know how to add an index...perhaps someone could pm me or explain it to me...

Yeah i did it on word and didnt realise it didnt take the paragraphs...i will surely fix that. Feel free to work on and add any pokemon you like

Great job sceptilianmaster....liking the Pidgeot entry! Good job! thanks!

Been a bit busy recently myself havent had time to write...but should have Rattata/Raticate up tomorrow hopefully!

Well, by chapter index I mean this:

edit the post. The top of it will have links to all the entries. It would go something like this...

Venasaur (And that would link to the post contain Venasaur's entry) (To get the post, click on the number in the top right of the post. Then, copy the url that appears at the top of the browser and paste it as follows: Venasaur (The text that will appear for the link) Repeat these steps for each individual pokemon entry. Also, you might want to have the whole pokedex list, denoting if anyone inpeticular has reserved an entry.

    Also, a theory I developed.

Wouldn't Hoenn or Sevii Island pokemon be sub-species of the Kanto/Johto classes? Think about it. For example, Ponyta and Rapidash can be found on Knot Island. How did they get there? If its similar to in the real world, they would get smaller and become different enough to be classified as a sub-species. The same thing goes for K/J pokemon found in Hoenn as well. The regions are far apart, but may have been together or connected by a land bridge long enough for pokemon to migrate from region to region.

I just wanna say that I think this is an amazing idea. I really like how this shows the workings, or the scientific things that make up a Pokemon. It's helped me with some of my writing too! Hehehe....Well, I might decide to help. I'll PM you my contribution when I've made up my mind.

I'll PM my contribution, as well. I'm doing Gardevoir. How about the stones being found in the wild, or a Sunkern being exposed to a stone that has been under the sun's rays for a long time, so it evolves into Sunflora.

Or, you could have Pika being struck by lightning. :p

    you Barbed

Just a quick update before i post Raticates entry.

Thanks very much im glad you like it...although now i cannot be fully credited as more and more people are writing their own articles. So soon we should have varying styles contrasting with each other which should hopefully make this even better. Maybe some people will even end up having a favurite articlist (is that a word??!!), i am personally LOVING Pink Parka Girls Pikachu entry (should be posted soon hopefully) even though its style is a little different than mine. Im glad it helped you with your writing too. Id love you to help! feel free to.

If you decide to write an article its completely up to you how you tackle the stone and trading evolution problem. However please try to keep it realistic.

    Raticate (Rattus ratta)
    Height: 2’04’’ Weight: 40.8 lbs

Raticate is a medium sized rodent usually living to around 30 years with the males being slightly larger than the females. Raticate have brown fur with lighter tan coloured on the under-belly going up to around the face. Raticate have three fingers and toes with their hind feet being webbed. Both hands and feet are nearly hairless as well as Raticate’s tail. Raticate have extremely large incisors, so large in fact that they are unable to close their mouth completely and thus have very large “grins”. However because Raticate’s teeth are so large and its jaw muscles so powerful they are extremely dangerous. Raticate are quadrupeds but are able to stand up on their hind legs to check their surroundings for prolonged amounts of time. Raticate also have a total of 6 whiskers that are essential for many day to day activities.

Raticate and their offspring commonly referred to as Rattata are a very common sight in meadows, fields and plains. Raticate live in Dens which are dug into the earth and are large enough to accommodate a fully grown Raticate and its offspring. Raticate’s teeth are continuously growing and because of this a Raticate has to constantly logs, trees and even rocks. Raticate even keep their teeth ground down by chewing on buildings, which is a constant problem when living in the country as a Raticate can completely destroy a house if left unchecked. Raticate’s whiskers serve as a balancing system. They also enable Raticate to find their way around in the dark. Studies have shown that if a Raticate’s whiskers are cut off it loses its sense of balance and cannot stand well or even move around as effectively. Raticate’s are omnivores and so will eat almost anything they come across, however they do not hunt for meat. Raticate live in the vicinity of several other Pokemon they live in harmony with. Raticate also live in very large communities and may share Dens and even have tunnels connected to other Raticate’s Dens. A group of Raticate can reach very large numbers with the usual size being between 20-30 individuals.

Raticate do not mate for life and the female brings up the offspring on her own. A Raticate does not have a particular breeding season and constantly breed all year round and if there are no natural predators around and Raticate population can explode. A Raticate’s offspring is referred to as a Rattata and is significantly smaller than a fully grown Raticate. Rattata’s are usually around 1 foot long and weigh around considerably less usually around 7.7 lbs. Their fur is dark purple in colour with lighter tan coloured fur on the under-belly leading up to around the mouth. A Rattata’s tail still has fur which thins as it matures. Rattata are constantly at play with one another and are very quick. They are an even more common sight than Raticate. Because of this many Rattata do not survive to maturity which helps keep the population down.

Raticate are not usually aggressive but if threatened they will fight and can be a very strong fighter. Before attacking a Raticate will attempt to scare away the intruder by standing on its hinds legs baring its fangs and shrieking at the intruder. Raticate mainly use their incisors for fighting but occasionally use their claws to scratch.
