English Pokémon Names - What They Mean :D

(This was approved by Erik Destler, BTW.)

Well since there is a thread for the Japanese Pokémon names and what they mean, why not a thread for what the English names mean/are made up of. Some of the naems are really easy, but I noticed that a lot of them are more complex and such. So.....

If you would like to submit a meaning to a name, please submit it in this format:

-Name of Pokémon (include its National Dex number!)
-What the name means
-Your username

(Yes, in that order!) And if you submit multiples, please make sure to put your username after each one.

-Ekans (023)
-The word 'Snake' spelled backwards
-Buraddo_Aipom

NOTICE: YOU MAY ONLY SUBMIT UP TO FOUR NAMES PER DAY. THIS IS DUE TO A LARGE AMOUNT OF NAMES WAITING TO BE ADDED, WHERE AS I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO ADD THEM ALL IN ONE SITTING.

Now for the humble list!

Okay, I got the list started, so now just post and help complete it!

Here is a list of the Pokémon that still need to be added. I'll add them when I have enough time. Until then, please be patient. Thank you.
Psyduck (054)
- From the word "psyche", which is of the self-mind, and the animal it portrays as a duck; a mental duck
- Kutie Pie

- Croconaw (159)
- The combination of "croc", short of "crocodile", and "gnaw", to chew. It literally means "croc chew" (though it sounds weird)
- Kutie Pie

- Hoothoot (163)
- The onomatopoeia of what an owl makes, the "who who" could sound like "hoot hoot" to some
- Kutie Pie

- Noctowl (164)
- "Noc" comes from "nocturnal", which is definition of something active at nighttime. And owls are generally nocturnal.
- Kutie Pie

- Mareep (179)
- A combination of Mary and sheep
- Kutie Pie

- Sudowoodo (185)
- "Sudo" comes from "pseudo", a prefix for "false". "Woodo" is a misspelling of "wood", or what the katakana looks like. "False wood"
- Kutie Pie

-Unown (201)
- Misspelling of "unknown", though it still maintains its original Japanese name, pronounced "An`non" when looking at its katakana. It might've gotten its name because of the way it's shaped to be the Latin Alphabet, something the Japanese aren't known to read very well, especially if they don't have certain letters such as "L", "Q", "V", and X", and pronounce English names differently. After all, they can't even read their own "Roomaji", something other languages use to help pronounce the language. Thus, another alphabet is unknown to them.

I do not feel like doing anymore as like I said, I could be here all day because most of the Pokemon's names are obvious and easy to see where their name derives from.

did the creaters of pokemon really follow all these meanings to make their names and shape?

No and yes. The English names are handled by Nintendo of America; Pokémon is created by Game Freak, a second-party developer to Nintendo.

The vast majority of Japanese Pokémon names are based on Japanese onomatopoeia (word equivalents of various sounds; "Pika" is a shortened version of the Japanese onomatopoeia for the sound of sparking electricity, while "chu" is likewise for the sound a mouse makes) or vocabulary. Where name changes are made at all, Nintendo of America largely tries to keep the same theme or basis for the names where at all possible, sometimes changing them to better suit typical English pronounciations or simply to be more marketable.

This is neither here nor there, however, so for the sake of contribution:

- Pikachu (025)
- Portmanteau of "pikapika" (onomatopoeia of the sound of sparking electricity) and "chuchu" (likewise for the sound of a squeaking animal), basically meaning "sparking mouse."
- BCVM22

- Raichu (026)
- Portmanteau of "rai" (Japanese for "thunder") and "chuchu" (Japanese onomatopoeia for the sound of a squeaking animal), basically meaning "thunder mouse," in reference to being a larger and more powerful version of Pikachu.
- BCVM22

- Poliwag (060)
- From "polliwog," a frog progressing through the tadpole stage of its development. As they grow and develop, polliwogs greatly resemble Poliwag, with a large tail (the basis for "-wag") and legs but no arms.
- BCVM22

- Poliwhirl (061)
- "Poli" from "poliwog," in reference to its froglike form; "whirl" meaning "to spin," from its circular, spinning stomach.
-BCVM22

- Poliwrath (062)
- "Poli" from "poliwog," in reference to its froglike form; "wrath" meaning anger or punishment, in reference to its Fighting-type.
- BCVM22

- Ho-oh (251)
- Purposeful misspelling of "houou" (the Chinese name for the mythical phoenix) to better accommodate English speakers.
- BCVM22

- Camerupt (323)
- Portmanteau of "camel" and "erupt."
- BCVM22
