Lucien, Pokecenter
March 20, 8 PM
A Pokecenter always seemed to be a place of activity, whether it was a young Trainer checking over local guides or a group that had come in to recover their Pokémon from a series of battles. Tonight was no different: the nurse on duty was gossiping happily with a florist, someone was trying to convince the manager to let them put up a poster, a small group of Trainers chatted about where they were staying and what they’d been up to. A Happiny on the counter was warbling and dancing about while a few other Pokémon were observing the building or showing off to one another.
In the midst of all this noise and activity, Lucien seemed like a calm island. He was standing in line near the counter, still and quiet. His eyes moved rapidly, reading through a thick paperback book in his hands. While he seemed absorbed fully in the book, he was aware of what was going on around him. It was a matter of splitting the mind, allowing conscious part to read while letting the unconscious observe for anything out of place.
Like his own words coming through the air. “The Flower Festival looks to be setting up a wonderful experience. The display gardens aren’t finished off yet, but what I’m seeing is beautiful designs and great flowers.”
Lucien flicked his eyes to the source of the sound: a television. Ah, that was his interview earlier with one of the news reporters. His voice in recording always sounded so different than what he heard when he spoke. It was something he had been meaning to read about at some point. He turned his eyes back to the book.
The news report continued on, the reporter saying, “I agree. But a lot of people have been talking about Galactic again lately and they’re worried about the safety of the event. What do you think about that?”
“It is a possibility,” he had said. “But we’re not going to stand by doing nothing if they do show up again. There will be several League members and strong Trainers at the event helping to keep the peace. We’ll be keeping our senses peeled for trouble and deal with it quickly. But I think the important thing to know is that this is a time to celebrate new life and new beginnings. The battle has already been won, so there should be no reason to fear what will happen.”
The florist said goodbye to the nurse and took the Pokeballs to her Pokémon back. Lucien finished off the last sentence of the page, flicked it with his thumb, then shifted his bookmark’s cord to the right place before closing the book. “Good evening,” he said, undoing the lock on his Pokeball holder to pass it over to her.
“Good evening, Lucien,” she said, smiling. “Good book?”
He shrugged. “It’s a murder mystery and I already recognize the formula. I’m hoping for a surprise, but that may not be.”
“Yes, that’s always disappointing. How may I help you?”
“These three just need healing, thanks,” he said, passing over the holder. He had someone request an informal battle while he was finishing up his observations on the town of Hearthome. The battle had been like the book; once he recognized the formula, it had been something of a disappointment.
“All right, I’ll get them taken care of,” she said cheerily as she took the three balls and gave their status screens a glance. It was something he’d done thousands of times and Lucien was already giving thought to finishing another page while the healing was done. But then there was a pause longer than normal; the nurse’s smile faltered for a look of puzzlement. “Oh, your Gallade…”
“What about him?” Lucien asked, keeping his voice calm. It didn’t seem like trouble. If it was trouble, she’d have a more worried look.
“I don’t really know,” she admitted, leaning on the counter and showing the screen to him. “See? He has this status of ‘Wraith’ on him.”
Wraith… even with as much experience with Pokémon as he had, that was unfamiliar as a status. “What does that mean?”
“Beats me,” she said. “I mean, this is only the second time I’ve seen it, and the other time was just a couple of minutes ago.” She pointed out one of the Trainers in the lounge area up front, a young man wearing an artificially tattered jean jacket. A Ponyta with blue hair flames was near him. “Both of his had the same thing.”
Lucien glanced at him. “I battled him not that long ago.”
“May I run a deep analysis on this one?” the nurse asked. “He wouldn’t let me try with his.”
He nodded, then glanced at his watch. “Of course. I have a meeting to attend, but it shouldn’t make me too late.”
A few minutes later, the nurse handed back his Pokémon; the analysis didn’t find anything out of the ordinary other than the strange status. It’d be another thing to bring up at the meeting. Lucien thanked the nurse then headed out of the Pokecenter. The young man and his friends had left not that long before.
Outside the center, Lucien pulled out the Gallade’s Pokeball and called him out. “Have you noticed anything odd about yourself or other Pokémon this evening?” he asked.
Gallade blinked at him, puzzled. Then he shook his head. “Neh.”
“Are you feeling all right?” he asked, although he expected an emphatic positive answer. Which he got in form of a puffed up chest and a salute. “Right, but I need to keep an eye on you for a little while. Let’s get going.”
And the two of them hurried across town to reach the Gym. In a few minutes, the security group he’d called together on behalf of the League would be meeting there. Fatina said she’d make sure the lights were on.
Data Log
All
Start posts in a similar format to mine: Trainer name, location, date, the hour (minutes not necessary). All I plan to happen in this evening are introducing the characters and getting the virus started. It is not necessary to chance an infection on the 20th. In fact, I’d almost recommend against it as any Pokemon that get infected this evening won’t have a chance to do much before they start showing signs in the morning.
At this point, there are five infected Pokémon: Lucien’s Gallade, a shiny Ponyta, a Luxio, and two NPCs which I will leave undetermined. Lucien is walking from the Pokecenter to the Gym with his Gallade out, but he won’t stick around for much more than a greeting.
The target is an NPC, a 22 year old man who has spiky brown hair and a roughed up jean jacket. He’s a loud and boastful character who is looking to challenge Fatina’s Gym; he’s annoyed tonight because the Gym is closed. He has the shiny Ponyta and the Luxio and they will be looking for battles. He’s clueless about the threat or his ‘rival’, and he’s self-centered; not a good Trainer. Free for use.
The other two NPCs currently have one infected Pokémon each. They have gone off on their own and are wandering around town. Nothing else is determined about them and any NPC you come up with could be one of them. Free for use.
