EV madness

I'm sorry, but this has been driving me crazy. From what I've read of EV's, whenever you fight pokemon whose EV's amount amounting to 4 of one kind, you gain one extra point in that stat when you level up. If you get 8 EV points, its 2 extra of that stat; equip a macho brace, every point is doubled. But this hasn't been working on my game.

While my pokemon to fight Tate and Liza, I didn't want to go over level 35 (for some reason). But I could never fit enough EV's into one level to raise my Breloom's speed by 8, which is what I needed to outrun their claydol. So I fought magikarp, with a macho brace. Through leveling up again and again without saving, I dsicovered that something was wrong. If its speed was to go up 6 one time, and I fought 2 more magikarp the next, it wouldn't go up by 7 - in fact, I had to fight FOUR magikarps to do this. And the closer I got to 8, the harder it became; I had to fight about 6 more magikarps just to boost my stat about one more - still with the machobrace. What the hell was going on?

Finally I did it, I fought them a few times and won, and I thought that would be the end. EV's seemed to work fine afterwards. But now I am training for the league, and something's wrong again. Normally my gyaradose's special attack goes up by one; after fighting 4 oddishs and 1 gloom with the macho brace, it goes up by... 2. This was the last straw.

Do stat increases require more EV points as you approach their maximum? There were all the examples I could remember, I'll do more tests with EVs to see if anything else is weird.

EV training doesn't automatically increase stats as soon as the EVs are gained. Rather, a Pokemon doesn't fully benefit from EV training until it reaches level 100 and has acquired all of its EVs. If you go hog-wild on EV training at a lower level and get massive amounts of EVs in one stat, you may notice that you get a large instant EV gain- something like 7 or 8 EVs gained in one stat. But you have to fight a lot of Pokemon to get that kind of immediate gain, which is why you got the results you've reported.

Back I guess??
I don´t know if it´s true, but if you start and finish EV train one pokemon in level 99 when it reaches level 100 you get +64 in the stats that you trained. (252 EV obviously)

I know that even if you do alot of EV training at one level, you won't max out the stat, but it still seems like I'm not getting enough EVs for the number of pokemon I'm fighting... In fact, I just raised my gyaradoes a level after fighting two glooms (2 special attack evs each), with the macho brace, and my special went up only ONE more than it would have without EVs. I wonder if my macho brace is malfunctioning...

IVs could be the culprit.

I was bored one day and decided to fill up my Trapinch's Attack EVs- going from 0 to 252. The most EVs gained per level, with PokeRus and the Macho Brace, was 8. That's the biggest EV gain I've ever gotten per level. It might be related to IVs, like Tazzler+Janina mentioned, but I'm thinking it's just the randomness of EV gains.
