The crying, facial expressions and angst in general were all overdone in my opinion. James and Inkay aren't even that close to start with; they may interact more than Jessie and Pumpkaboo for example, but that's not saying much tbh. I've never seen them as BFFs.

Then, it is true that his relationship with inkay in Xy was less frequently enhancement that his relationship with Chimecho or Mime Jr in AG / DP but there was sometimes some small scenes like James who has not started running immediately with Jessie and Meowth in the Tower of Mastery to wait inkay

Anyway, I mainly think this episode was used to develop the personalities of James and his pokémon (Jessie will certainly gain some development with the tripokalon. She has already found her diva ways and some of the tsundere side).
Before that, we never really saw the Team Rocket TRio off-work in XY; so we could not really know how they behaved when they were not busy to bother Ash, his friends or COTD. Since BW, the TRio was no longer used as full characters but only as opponents or source of troubles and nothing else
I hope that this meant that we will begin to see them act outside their work like in the OS, AG, DP, it was something that was critically lacking.

Really enjoyed this episode, but then again I would, considering it was based around TR and specifically James, whom has always had the best emotional moments with his Pokemon (ignoring BW)..

Finally some TR bonding with their Pokemon moments.
After the catastrophe that was the relationships with Yamask/Amoongus it's a welcome change.
Loving Inkay and I get the feeling it'll evolve when the Malamar plot wraps up and they deal with them for good.

So, out of nowhere, James and Inkay has an Ash/Pikachu-bond level, even with James being capable of breaking mind control with his voice ... and a croissant ... OK
We clearly saw them bonding off-screen. It's cheap, but the flashbacks show it happened off-screen so it makes sense.

Even Ash was unable to break Pikachu's mind control the first time it got possessed in "Pikachu Re-Volts", he tricked Pikachu to destroy Butch & Cassidy's machine, James only needed a croissant ... OK

This is James. Although he is a "villain" James is more emotive than Ash.
He has always had this kind of extremely strong bond with each of his pokemon (except for BW)

You've never seen the episode: "Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid!"? (OS) Victreebel and James were so close: they ate, slept and took their bath together.
Carnivine has saved Barry, Dawn and the Team Rocket of the Team Galaxy after James had cried in the episode: "The Ruins of Steel Island!" (DP)
