Fanservice and Ecchi: Too much?

First bolded line: Yes, I would definitely do that. Porn doesn't need plot. It's all about mindless shagging. Ecchi uses flimsy reasons to force boobs against the main character's face to excite you and make you watch a half-assed plot. In the end you will clap that it's great. I am just generalizing here, maybe a few ecchi might have real plot.

Because, semi-covered women entice me more. Besides, there's more to a character than just boobies. I can't respect a female lead whose actions constantly focus on her boobs moving. But that's just me.

Besides, I said I am extremely biased on this topic.

    DAMN, I DIDN'T KNOW.

Sounds like a good theory, though I'm pretty sure it does go much deeper than that. Considering how there are still cultures that marry off young girls (mainly because life-expectancy is still low in those countries), I'm sure that the Lolita Complex has existed since the dawn of time. But the word didn't exist until the book Lolita was published in 1955. (Take a guess what it's about. Don't think too hard about it.)

There's no doubt that they're very profitable. It's aimed at mature audiences, after all, the source of profit. If they weren't profitable, I wouldn't think they'd be as mainstream as they are.

I'm biased on it, too, probably more than anyone else in this thread, but I've tried to keep it to myself for the most part. I have at least over the years come to terms with the fact that it exists and will always exist, and that there's nothing anyone can do about it once it's made. There is that handy skill called "turning it off" if I don't like what I see, so for the most part I haven't complained about it for a while.

I agree with most of what you said, but I'm a lot more lenient about fanservice. Perhaps because I enjoy it more, but ehhh. lol

But I agree it's done mostly for money and by extension for the "fans" enjoyment.

Anime is still a really small medium. They need their money because they are litterally being money starved.

The only ones that really really sell are the ones that can sell merchandise about their show.

The merchandise can range from action figures to body/waifu pillows. These things have to sell usually...

This is why Anime needs popularity. :/

Though to be honest, as anime stands now, I think its okay. Not good, but okay. I'm perfectly okay with their being "gems" of story every season, and the rest being "escapism".

EDIT: Just so you know, I don't have studies to back up my claims. I'm only listening to the internet. The only thing I'm sure of is anime still being a small medium.

It sounds about right since anime, while it is slowly becoming more mainstream in the West (compare today with that of ten years ago), it's still a bit of a niche territory. Back in the day, when anime was a huge niche territory here in the States, those who weren't into anime saw it as basically pornography in cartoon form, so that kind of thinking would be more acceptable then. These days, while that mindset still exists here and there, people are mostly now more knowledgeable of anime that they typically know better. They're half-right in some cases, of course, but hentai and to an extent some ecchi shows never air over here (except maybe on the more hardcore cable channels), they just go straight to video. But even then, I think people finding those tapes in video stores and taking them home to watch without knowing what it's about probably contributed to that way of thinking for a couple of decades. Or they knew it was an anime (remember, Speed Racer defined anime for a generation), they just didn't realize it was pornographic--or acted like it.

I wouldn't say anime is money-starved, since it's doing very well in its home country. Of course, the whole selling of merchandise when it comes to waifu body pillows wouldn't sell as well overseas as it would in Japan, I'm fairly certain. Japan is way more lenient about that kind of thing than we are. I guess that's why the boyfriend pillow infomercial is treated more of a joke here than it would have been there, I dunno.

Minor correction. Even in Japan it's still a small medium. They're more open about it, and its more popular there, but its no where near the most popular thing. Otaku is atcually a looked down upon word generally speaking, while over here it just brings confusion to a normal person. I've also once heard that the budget used on an average cartoon is generally 3 times the amount one that is used on an average anime (Seasonal). Don't absolutely trust me on that last one, but this is supposaidly the stuff they deal with. Doesn't help that the japanese harp on such beautiful animation comparitive to most cartoons, therefore wasting more budget. (Not that I mind though :p)

Shows like Pokemon and Yugioh do well, as I said, because of the merchandise they advertise and the fact that they stick with a sort of formula. Pokemon off and on stays on tv tokyo's top 10 if I remember correctly, but really only because it is what it is...

Pretty sure they're just pandering to the otaku.

Pandering to the otaku? Now I never.

They're pandering to the fact that males like boobs. Sometimes they pander too much, sometimes they pander to little, but occasionally they pander just the right amount. Girl gets her clothes blown off every episode? Nope. Girl with large breasteses has an issue in one episode of the whole series where her chest won't fit through something? A-ok.

It's all about the frequency, and to a lesser extent the severity, of the pandering.

No, they're pandering to guys like you who can't get any irl.

    ...?

Did I say something wrong? Why the anger? Chill yourself. Maybe you misunderstood, because my point is the sexualization has to have a limit, even if it is explicitly sexual. I was saying that if the female character is strong, there is no issue with an occasional anatomical mishap, but if she is only there for her body, it's too much.

Yes. My post was in response to Pikachu's own theory about loli fan service. You're post added nothing to what was being discussed and only went on to state the obvious about fan service (a point already mentioned earlier in the thread by you and a few others).

    Thus I negged you.

Yeah, sure, but even if I said that same thing 10x there was no need for that. I also added my own perspective on ecchis regarding the over-sexualization of women, saying that it isn't something that ought to be preferred, but I guess that flew under your radar. Didn't mean to anger you so much. :I

Since it is such a big deal to you, the issue of lolicon is not that significant to me. Not only is it just a drawing, but it has a very small audience which include but aren't limited to otakus. It's definitely a cultural difference, because any kind of child nudity or semi-nudity, even in a drawing, would be blasted out of the water in the U.S. I don't think there's as big of an issue with it in Japan, correct me if I'm wrong.

If you said it 10x, and it was in response to me, I would've spread rep to neg you 10x. :snowlax:

Pretty sure they have some kind of issue with it. Shows with lolicon usually air late at night or on a channel that isn't one of those national/broadcast things last I checked. Haven't kept up with Japanese broadcasting for a long time though so it might've changed.
