Farewell, Sophocles! (969)

Hey guys, so I have a question...was there a scene where Charjabug is running on Sophocles's wheel here?? I saw it mentioned in places but I just watched but the dub and raw and didn't see a scene like that :/...
Yes. It's part of the Poké Problem segment, though. Not part of the actual episode.

Looks like Sophocles is hard at work at Sophocles' Lab.

The lab is called "the Māmane Lab" in the original, so that's just the dub not being very good at this entire translation thing.

I thought this was a great episode.

Dubbed in particular. Thankfully they remove Snowbelle City which I highly disagreed with in the raw version.

I missed the Welcome to Alola theme as I think it's one of my favourites but I was happy with the new soundtrack.

And the dub is criticized for not using a theme I've heard being used for the hundredth time. I can understand if they didn't use an Alolan theme but a Kalos one? No thanks this isn't Kalos anymore. I heard they used it in the Litten episode too. I was super annoyed they went with the Kalos music on both the sub and dub during the Tapu Koko battle.

Unwavering beliefs. Richter Taylor is my name now.

Serebii Forums, please hurry up and create a "like" button for me to give about a googolplex of those to this post I quoted.

Anyway, yes, that's one of my biggest gripes with the JP version's music direction, especially nowadays. I've heard that nothing from OS to DP had been used since BW, so maybe that has something to do with why the JP version's sound library seems so minuscule nowadays. Anyway, this and more ultimately are why I prefer the dub score wholeheartedly.

Oh, and yes, that track you're talking about was indeed used in the Litten episode. Refer to that episode's thread to see how it worked against it.

One of my only complaints about the dub is that it tends to be overly literal with translation. For the love of God, it even kept that one instance of Sophocles' dad referring to his wife as "Sophocles' Mom" a few episodes back. I blame not just TPCi for that, but the people who wanted an accurate translation of the show. Well, that Monkey Paw wish was granted, huh?

Yeah I was weirded out he said Sophocles' mom. I was like, "you mean your wife?"
And honestly I want to hear more Sun and Moon music. Why not play Mother and Daughter from S&M for sad moments. Or even Unwavering Heart from BW. And whenever Ash fights Koko play the Tapu theme!!

I appreciated seeing how distressed Maamane's Togedemaru was when she thought she'd be separated from Satoshi's Pikachu due to the move, and I liked watching Maamane being so emotional about leaving his friends. Satoshi finding a wild Denjimushi for Maamane to capture was thoughtful of him, not to mention altruistic.

Wish Ash had caught the Charjabug for himself since the first opening implied that he was gonna catch a Grubbin. Oh well. :(
Yeah I really want Ash to get another Electric type to be honest. He's gotten multiple of every other type that he's gotten.

Sophocles is the Electric type specialist and given he'll likely never be allowed to have anything that could overshadow Pikachu, he really needed Charjabug more.

I liked how Charjabug slowly worked up into one of those 'deceptively helpful' Pokemon as the series continued as well, which works better for a trainer that doesn't battle much.

That's fair. But they could have at least made Ash catch Grubbin. My post is more about in general throughout all series combined, rather than just this one episode, even though I posted it in this episode thread.

This is still my favorite Maamane episode since he got more focus than in his other starring roles, and I wish we'd see the emotional side of him more often rather than just his cold, intellectual side.

We saw his emotional side in the latest dub episode.

Good episode. It was nice to see Ash catch a Charjabug as a gift for Sophocles, even if the latter wasn't moving away after all. Although I was surprised at Ash not battling the Bug-type with his Pokemon nor catching it in a Poke Ball (or, better yet, a Net Ball).
7/10
If he had caught it himself, it would have been his, not Sophocles's.
