Charmander all the way!

How on earth did Torchic get so many? It's just a bird... a bird with a big head... nothing original...

I'm glad we can finally have a poll where Charmander doesn't kick everyone's ass.

....Anywho! Considering this is in the ANIME SECTION *hint, hint, wink, wink, nudge, nudge!*, I'm going to vote for my favourite starter pokémon in the animé. Yeah, it's an insanely bizarre concept I know, but I'm afraid you'll have to bare with me for a moment here folks.

My favourite animé!starter pokémon was Treeko.
Treeko was a really great character, and one of the few pokémon to develop a personality you could actually sympathise with. Treeko was a loner, who didn't take help from anyone, and lived by his own rules. He pushed himself to his limits on a number of occasions, and always strived to reach his full potential, no matter what obstacle stood in his way. It didn't matter if he couldn't use any grass type moves: He was going to flatten that far more experienced Hariyama. He couldn't care less about sticking around with Ash, as long as he could get his rematch with the rampaging Exploud. Screw that Beedrill swarm, I'm going to dive right in there despite the fact I can't even attack.
That's what I really admire about the pokémon the most. He worked his bushy fern butt off to get where he is today. It was by no means an easy ride, and he did in fact have it a lot tougher than pretty much any of Ash's other pokémon. But at the end of the road, he's wound up being Ash's strongest grass type (and no, that ISN'T debatable), as well as being one of his toughest contenders overall. And he truly earned it.
I also liked his relationship with Ash and the other pokémon. He loved his trainer like everyone else, but had a very subtle way of showing it due to his preference of solitude. I rather liked the fact that he was one of the few pokémon to never charge up to Ash and hug him in some comical fashion, or pound him with an attack to show his affection.

Runners up include-

Chikorita/Bayleef, for not only looking and sounding as cute as a button, but also for having a very entertaining relationship with Ash.

Torchic, for being a complete and utter stooge and (as Yamato-san pointed out in an earlier thread) being the first starter pokémon to actually represent a begining trainer's first partner somewhat accurately.

Cyndaquil, because it's behavoir and attitude were downright odd most of the time. One moment it would be full of energy, the next it would let out a big yawn of sleepy content. That and the fact that it is easily the most underated starter pokémon to ever grace this show. Far too many people seem to love throwing around the false rumour that Cynda was one of Ash's weakest, when this was clearly not the case.

In vague order:
Treecko - Like you expected me to not vote for it? Since I'm lazy AND the bulk of what's to be said about it has been said, I'll simply direct you to Gravy's explaination of why it's great. Add in a bit of "it's part of MY favorite Pokemon's evo line!" bias, and there you go.

Charizard - Not Charmander, Charizard. Charmander was boring. Charmander had no personality whatsoever. Charmander had no personality quirks that would dicate Charmander's reaction to a lack of pronouns such as found here. Then it evolved. Rebelliousness became its defining trait since that's what it did AND it was the only rebellious Pokemon we've ever really seen(Bayleef's brief running-away ep excluded). That was all well and good, but it wasn't INTERESTING outside of the first "it's LISTENING TO ASH :O" occassion(the Blaine battle, for those too lazy to remember/look it up). And then there was Poliwrath, and there was much freezing of the generic obese dragon. And thus after a night of seeing its trainer's dedication to even the most ungrateful of Pokemon it did begin to obey. And hence did it become what it is today - a Pokemon usually noted only for strength, but still cares for its trainer quite a bit, and is assumedly busy maintaining (or perhaps even BUILDING) its strength during the long stretches of time we don't see it. Really, that transistion from Rebel to Loyal Powerhouse is one of the main reasons I like the thing's anime incarnation. Pity that almost every pre-AG Pokemon was doomed not to have much of a personality beyond a quirk or two, but the fact that Charizard had one at ALL even before it started obeying(rebellious jerk that WILL obey when it deems its opponent strong enough) makes it stand out, overrated as it is.
Still doesn't change the fact that Charmander bored the hell out of me.

Bulbasaur - Another stubborn Pokemon makes the list! I honestly don't remember much from it back in Kanto, but at SOME point it started showing off its badasss personality that we've come to know and possibly love.

Chikorita - What IS it with Grass starters always being interesting? In this case it had the whole crush on Ash thing going on, blah blah blah.

Pochama - Not from one of the gens we're talking about, but come oooooon. How can you NOT love it?

Naetle - It's like Bulbasaur, but different enough for me to not get annoyed with it. And those differences make me like it even more, at least for now.

Cyndaquil, not because I'm a big fan of Cyndaquil but because I love it's evolutions. Quilava and Typhlosion are two of my favorite pokemon. Typhlosion has to be my favorite fully evolved starter out of any of them. Second place Chikorita/Bayleef/Meganium. The rest of them....eh...and I HATED the Hoenn starters. I also hate the new D/P starters. Pochama is the only one that's actually kind of cute, but its evolutions are HORRENDOUSLY UGLY.[/rant]

So Cyndaquil and Chikorita are the only two starters that I really like.

CyberCubed

Yeah, ok!
The most boring of all the starters on the show is probably Mudkip. The thing barely had a personality to speak of, and only came out for the ocassional water gun.
