Same. He is the most developed one aswell.
Really? Because I felt like Opal and Piers were very much developed as characters in their own rights. Mainly Opal for being so different from the other elder Pokémon trainers we’ve had in the past like Pryce or Agatha. She was fun and very youthful acting for her age while most of the other elder trainers we’ve ever had to battle were very serious and rarely smiled. Bertha, Wattson, And Wulfric being the exceptions. Piers wasn’t as depressing as he looked and he genuinely wanted to help everyone out as much as he could during the post game and before the Championship battle with Leon.

Bede is the one that actually changes during the story.

Yeah but the whole Fairy gym leader thing is just tacked on and he doesn’t even have/hardly any passion for the typing unlike Opal and to a lesser extent, Mina. Even Valerie had that!

It doesn’t help that he doesn’t even return until breaking through security somehow and challenging you after Opal just steals him away in Hammerlocke. And he gets to be a gym leader because he wears...purple? Like OK he had nowhere to go but the the other reasoning because he wears a certain color was dumb and getting to become a gym leader without how things are seen between Hammerlocke & Wyndon is just bad writing.

Bede had it all going good until this happened.

I think Opal had her personality fleshed out very well. She was an excentric women, which is an important factor as to why she accepted Bede as her apprentice in the first place.
But development wise, Bede is the one who actually went through changes the most. He retains his personality, but he also learns to recognize the player's abilities a lot more and stops looking for the Chairman approval aswell. And as much as he doesn't like to admit it, you can see that later on he starts to like being the Fairy gym leader and being Opal's apprentice.

I disliked how Bede being a Fairy Type master was randomly slapped on and just takes away from the whole "type master" vibe Gym leaders have. Isn't the whole point was to use types you excel at and like using? Wasn't that Psychic for Bede? Anyway my personal favorites is Nessa, Allister and Rihan. Special shout out to Piers and Opal but I feel those three displayed the most personality (or in Allister's case one of the most unique) in the games.

At least have his master be a Psychic type gym leader. We don’t even know what happens with his Duosion & Gothorita!

He can’t go out randomly being a Fairy type user out of nowhere. Look at him. Look at him!

Better safe than sorry. :p

Opal is eccentric. She was looking for a specific type of person to take over her gym. The pink helped, but she was looking for someone fabulous!

Your entitled to your opinion, but I happen to like Bede as a male Fairy type Gym Leader. :p

I don’t think this was the case with Cheren when he took over for Lenora in B2W2. He just got Normal type Gym Leader tacked on to him. Besides, I think Bede likes cute/pretty Pokemon, which a lot of Fairy types tend to be.

I don't think it was ever implied he was Lenora's successor (meaning she personally asked him). Cheren was okay because his original team never leaned toward a preferred type. Bede was clearly a Psychic master who was forced to be a Fairy type master the last 30 minutes of the game. They should of just made him a Fairy user in the first place.

Probably Opal

Opal is an interesting character and her gym challenge made me laugh with all those questions. I thought the NPC's were exaggerating and it'd be an easy quiz like in other games (what is fire weak to, what does so-and-so evolve into, etc). I love the theater setting her gym challenge is as well, fits in with the fairy town theme. Her battle was in the middle in-terms of challenge.

But I do like Kabu for working hard in his training, eagerness to battle & stay fit and even sending you off after you beat him in battle.

And I like Allister's gym. Don't know much about the guy. I just really like the teacup ride!

Also, even before he became a fairy type gym leader, half of his team were pokémon that would eventually evolve into fairy types and even after he became a fairy type gym leader he still owned a bunch of psychic types aswell.

I liked that his team's type changes as he changes aswell.

He challenges you because he's running away from the old lady who's specifically molding him into that. He doesn't want to specialize in Fairy types. Though I do wish they'd explain where his Gothorita and Duosion went.

EDIT: My favorite Gym Leader is Marnie.

I don’t know about not wanting to specialize in Fairy types. Half his team were going to evolve into Fairy types anyway. Getting away from Opal sounds about right though. She’s strict, and a little nuts.

While we're on this topic, anybody else sympathize with the Gym Challenger who's an old man and reveals himself to be a Steel-type specialist? I found it interesting they included him into the game to show that there is no age ceiling for the Gym Challenge despite most of the challengers being young. This is an issue I sometimes see pop up, especially in regards to sports, in which people are shunned if they engage in particular hobbies past a certain age. For instance, there is a soccer program near where I live whose members are middle-aged to elderly, I guess the opposite to a youth program. They get together and play noncompetitive games weekly at a nearby field. They're made of people who just simply like playing soccer. To my knowledge, it's the only such program in the area. All of the other ones are oriented toward children and young adults. This NPC shows that, if you show promise, you can be endorsed, no matter how old you are.

This elderly NPC is also shown to have obtained seven badges before dropping out to Raihan. Raihan says there are less than 10 challengers left by the time you get to battle him, meaning he wound up among the top ten challengers for the season. (Incidentally, this also means, as a Steel-type specialist, he managed to beat Kabu and, in the Sword version, Bea, both of whom should have a major advantage against him.)

Piers and Opal are interesting with their development and handing over their Gyms (Still sad Piers does not uses G-Max Toxcitry in his Champion Cup Rematch).

I like Kabu and his Hoesnn backstory (With the possibility of him being Flannery's Grandpa) but I think he should have ended up as a Bug specialist (Hoenn in general is a poor region for a Fire specialist, specially since Kabu does neither have Numer or Torkoal).

Piers is personally opposed to Dynamaxing; he refuses to do it even when a Power Spot is nearby. Of course, his hometown doesn't have a Power Spot either, but we do see he's not too fond of the concept. (And because he battles in a small area without many spectators, he's the closest Galar has to a traditional Gym Leader.)

As for Fire-type specialization in Hoenn, I think it's quite viable. I mean, Team Magma is focused on the type (albeit alongside Ground). It also fits in with the fact that Hoenn is volcanically active and has the warmest climate of all of the regions based on Japan.

You know, I think you just hit the nail on the head about why Opal is so interesting to me. I described why earlier, but I felt like there was still something about her that made her a more appealing character than the other elderly Gym Leaders. It's because, seeing her during the orientation, I thought she was going to be one of those stuffy, snobby types, but it was refreshing to see her be energetic, outgoing, and behaving very much like an eccentric artist.

It's also a weird sight to see someone who's maybe 80 or 90 years old standing out there in a stadium as a celebrity.

About Kabu and Fire-types, GF did not think about it much as they should've added Numer to the Galar Roster. I persoanlly think he could've had an interesting Team of Ninjask. Shedinja and Centiscorch. The first 2 are Hoenn Pokemon (and only Hoenn bug available) both of which having quite specific (Ninjask with his Speed Boost and Shedinja with Wonder Guard). I think it will be more interesting than Ninetales and Arcanine. They could've at least switch Ninetales with Torkoal (since he has one in the rematch, it's a Hoenn Pokemon and has a clear connection to Flannery).

As per Piers, I understand, on one hand, his dislike for G-Maxing. On the other, though he moved from being a Gym Leader to being a gadabout. They can also somehow make a sub-story of him learning about Toxcitry Gigamax and how much it suits his musical theme starting to use it. I think it would be a nice character development.

Also it's funny that Marnie will not G-max her Grimmsnarl during Gym Battles.

I also hate that Opal does not appers in the Challenge Cup even though Hop (Who retired from being a trainer) and Piers (who resigned from being a Gym Leader) are there,

Do you mean Numel?

Though I won't argue about the choice of types, I will say that Shedinja is a very bad choice for a Gym Leader's opening roster because you need to know about Wonder Guard in order to fight it, and not everyone will have Pokémon that can damage Shedinja. It's unfair to people not familiar with Shedinja, some of whom will experience a slow but inevitable total party kill, which is not fun. And for those not familiar with Shedinja but ARE able to defeat it, that becomes sheer trial and error in battle, which is also not fun. That's the most likely reason Shedinja is extremely rare among NPC trainers outside of Battle Tower type modes.

Opal doesn't appear because she wants to retire. When she scouted out Bede, that was pretty much her retirement moment.

See I'm not sure if he dislikes D/G-Max per se? Though he may have mentioned it and I've forgotten. He refuses to use it for the Champions Cup, but he states that it's for the pride of Spikemuth and so I'd say he's more-so trying to show people that battles without Dynamax can be exciting (so pls visit him) since his town has no choice and isn't very popular as a result.
The reason he doesn't use it during the Gym Challenge, and the reason Marnie doesn't use it as a Gym Leader, is simply because they can't. Their Gym and street/Town doesn't have a Power Spot, so it's nothing really of a personality indicator.
