Wes. Definitely. He looks the coolest, isn't the typical 10-year old starting a journey, and has a dark past. Not your average lead...
Then would be Gold. He looks the best of all the main characters in handhelds so far. Just for that.
And Leaf. The best of all the main girls. And the one with th hottest outfit. She's awfully cute as well. ^^

I own the 5th gen
Leo, for more or less the same reasons that Orion stated. Though a teen-age male protagonist is a bit of a cliche in RPGs, and even anime, in general (though I like those type of characters, so I'm not complaining), he is definitely a breath of fresh air in the Pokemon franchise (and you start the game immediately with evolved Pokemon and battles at level 20. How kickass is that?). Why'd they have to f*** that up in XD and make Lute yet another 10-year old?

Wes. For all you people who either don't have Colloseum or don't have a brain, I'll explain.
He isn't the same ten year old who goes on a journey without a motive and who just happens to come across an evil team and beats them because he doesn't have anything better to do. Wes is an ex-Snagem, the most evil team besides Cipher, member, who probably disbandend Snagem because they worked together with Cipher. He has just one goal and that is to stop Cipher.
He has a huge motorcycle. Just that makes better then everybody else except for Miror B (Miror B>everything else>Pikachu).
He is the only character that actually has a stalker of the opposite gender (no, rivals and Scott aren't stalkers). Rui gets anoying after some time, but she still remains to travel with you even after there aren't any Shadows left.
He's an ex member of the second most evil team known to men. Not only that, he blew up their head-quarters and stole the portable Snag Machine from them.
He still has tales about him five years after he beat Cipher. Not only that, he mysteriously disappeared. He'd done his job and didn't need to stay around any longer. Unlike Red who still wants the spotlight three years after his height.
He beat Cipher together with a girl who did nothing but locating Shadow Pokémon. For you people who don't know, Cipher is the strongest and most evil team:
-In Colloseum they captured three legendaries and in XD they captured four more.
-They controlled an entire region.
-They nearly captured Celebi.
-They created Pokémon who attacked humans so that they could conquer the world.
-They build a gigantic tower. That shows how rich they are.
-They had Miror B as an admin.
Those are just a small percentage of reasons of why Cipher is the most evil team. I could go on for a long time about why Cipher owns and the other teams blow, but that isn't what this thread is about.

I would say Wes because he has a dark past to him that many of the people that you play don't. He is probably the closest you can get to playing a bad guy since he was formerly one. Another thing is that you gotta love that trench with those shades. He was really fun to play with because he is so unique unlike most of the characters.
I am a fan of Wes' dark nature myself. He is just different than the typical 10 year old. He actually has a personality and past. Most of the trainers you can play as have no backstory, just a dream of becoming a trainer and working to become Champion. Even Michael from XD was told what to do by his family unlike Wes who wanted to do that on his own. I also like FRLG Girl and Brendan's character designs.

Bah, I'm not too fond of Wes, for the very reason people love him. I like the anonymous random kid you're forced to play, because, well... he/she has no personality to speak of. I think they were trying to get the fact that that random nobody who never says a word (save for 'yes' and 'no') is you. Collo for me felt like just about every other video game, I'm sitting on my bed, controlling some character that isn't me. Takes you out of the game, eh?
