Back when Tigers used to smoke.
In Unova, Gyms took a very unique transformation thanks to GameFreak's determination to push the graphical limitations of the DS as much as possible. Gyms started to change their style being more like interactive locations like art galleries or libraries or restaurants. It added a further sense of personality to these Gyms, a lot of them often modeled after not only the type the Gym Leader use but their own careers as well. So which one is your favorite Gym, from outer and inner design, personality, trial, trainers to the Gym Leaders themselves!

  • Striaton Gym, a butler cafe where you must step on the right panels to open the curtains to bigger rooms.

H3ePLZd.png

  • Nacrene Gym, a museum/library where the main character must find memos to unlock a secret room.

6paiYek.png

  • Castelia Gym, an artwork itself, your personal clothes go through goops of sticky honey in order to reach buttons that unlock barricaded doors in the original BW. In BW2, you have to go through cocoons to reach different level of floors.

  • Nimbasa Gym, a roller coaster ride in BW and a fashion show in BW2. In BW, this consists of a puzzle around a roller coaster that goes at extremely fast speeds and high loops in the air. In BW2, you have to fight a series of trainers during a fashion show.

lIdj4p6.png

  • Driftveil Gym, set in a giant hole, this puzzle consists of descending down to the darkness through girders and elevators in the original Black and White. In Black and White 2, it is the same only on conveyor belts, not elevators.

ZYbUypJ.png

  • Mistralton Gym, an air base that consists of firing yourself out of a canon sky-high into the air and slamming yourself into walls in the original Black and White. In Black and White 2, the cannons are ditched in favor of massive fans that will blow you away if your not behind walls while trying to reach the Gym Leader.

Kg8KaoT.png

  • Icirrus Gym, an ice cave consisting of spinning, not skiing, spinning yourself across the ice floor in order to get to your destination.

DsGIeMR.png

  • Opelucid Gym, a dragon-themed building that consists of manning dragons to create bridges.
210px-Virbank_Gym_Adventures.png

  • Virbank Gym, a rock concert hall that consists of defeating Roxie's bandmembers in PKMN battles in order to get Roxie's attention to you.
EyBwblb.png

  • Humilau Gym, an in-doors bog, you must man lily-pads in order to reach the Gym Leader.

My favorite in BW, when I initially played the games, was and still is Lenora’s. It wasn’t the most extravagant, but I liked how it had the museum in front, the library gym in the back, and then she’s just waiting for you in the Basement.

In BW2, I think Roxie would take the cake (I pretty much love the Gyms/Remodels in the sequel, all the same). The fact that the band is singing and playing, and each instrument and vocalist stops after they get defeated was a nice touch (it’s the little things). EVERY gym was fun to go through, even Cheren’s with the battlefield drawn out and him tapping his foot.

My favourite Gyms in Unova would have to be Striation (BW1), Nacrene, Nimbasa (both versions), Virbank and Humilau. I like how Striaton's incorporated the theme of the elemental trio and a mini-quiz in the form of stepping on the correct type symbol.

Nimbasa and Virbank are probably the best of all the Unova Gyms. Nimbasa's was fun in both the originals and the sequels, with the rollercoaster in the former and the catwalk in the latter. Then Virbank has Roxie's band singing what is probably the first-ever song in a Pokémon game with vocals: "P-O-K-E-M-O-N, Pokémon!"

Castelia and Opelucid come pretty close - I liked the honeycombs and paint splattered around Burgh's room, and the towering dragons. Mistralton's was also fun to traverse with all the sky cannons and fans.

My favourite would be the Opelucid Gym because of the intense music in there as well as Drayden being a specialist of Dragon-types. It doesn’t have my favourite layout, which is quite plain. I have several favourites, Castelia Gym in both versions, Nacrene Gym, BW Nimbasa Gym and B2W2 Driftveil Gym.

Why do I get a Stephen King-ish vibe from Burgh's Gym in BW2? Is it because of the clowns or the cocoons they burst out of?

Also, Clay's Gym in BW2 kind of reminds me of Donkey Kong Country. Even the music sounds a bit like it.

Design-wise, Mistralton and Nimbasa (rollercoaster version) were probably my favorites. Mostly because their puzzles were the ones that I found the most fun.

I misread this and thought you said "quite a pain" for a minute there. (Although aligning those dragon heads in BW certainly could be that.) xD

That was because that Gym didn’t have a complex puzzle but I felt that going on the dragons’ heads was the best part. I preferred the BW layout anyway.

While this Gym was nothing but a cat walk.

Elesa's Gym from BW2 is my favorite hands down, it fits the character... being a model, the music as it slowly builds to the gym leader is fantastic and then she reveals herself in all her glory.

Elesa is best Gym Leader, hands down... I'm not going to spoil what she does after you beaten her... but it is very sweet.

Does anyone else think Marlon's Gym music sounds like elevator music? It's pretty relaxing to listen to. ;)

I remember spending hours trying to find my way around Opelucid Gym because of the trailing dragons. (I played Black, so Drayden was the Gym Leader in my game.) It's kind of a pain when you have to keep rushing back and forth to the Pokémon Centre in between battles. That was only in the originals though, I think in the sequels you had to line the dragons' heads up with each other, or something.

I thought that Burgh’s Gym BGM was really chill. I think it’s more or so in that Gym and that’s the reason I like that Gym.

The Nimbasa one, I like both Gym designs and the remixed Gym theme in the sequels, and what happens after you defeat Elesa makes up for the lack of a puzzle.

I like how Elesa changed her look between the originals and the sequels. She's a fashion model, so of course she has to have a new look every now and then. ;)

I preferred the BW version of the Nimbasa Gym because it had rollercoasters in it. I wasn't as much of a fan of Elesa to be honest. I felt that the B2W2 version of the Gym was plain but it at least had an appropriate theme for Elesa and the catwalk suited really well.

I kind of like how the music went "Are you ready?" when you talk to the models, and "GIVE ME WHAT I NEEEEEEEEEEEED!" when Elesa makes her entrance.

Same here. The fashion runway theme of the B2/W2 redesign was awesome, as was the music inside which I found edgy.

The music change was pretty flashy. In terms of music I would definitely have preferred the B2W2 version as it reflects well the atmosphere of a fashion show or a performance.

In Black & White, I would say Mistralton gym as I essentially liked a lot the cannons system. The Black & White 2 version is pretty cool too as the structure itself somewhat reminds me of Winona's gym back in the Hoenn games.

In Black & White 2, I would say Humilau gym. The structure is just overall pleasant to look at and pass through plus, I quite like how the various platforms and plants inside the gym itself somewhat look plasticky.

I don't think I ever stated what was my favorite gym which would undeniably have to be Elesa's Gym from the first game. The roller coaster ride is such a neat idea and I hope by the time we get an HD remake sequel of Black and White 3, we see Elesa's Gym looking like a real-life roller coaster lol.

Didn’t Winona’s Gym have those turnstile things that only let you go a certain way?
