Since on the very first ep. of the show when they showed Ho-oh do you think that they already had an idea of what the Johto PKMN were going to look like...or were they just showing one that you wouldnt find in red/blue/green to suprise us later on...

If anything, I think the whole point of Hou'ou was just to be a mysterious pokemon we'd learn about in the last episode or something. Since the games gave the show a huge popularity boost though, the whole thing was scrapped to make way for a long series.

Maybe not, but I think it makes sense. Also explains how Myuutwo was on the door at Misaki's lighthouse. They planned things out in advance and then had to ditch them so the series would continue.

You could have asked in the episode discussion thread. :s

I don't think they really had a good idea of the Jouto pokémon at the time Houou was shown in the animé. It was most likely shown to keep up interest and make people wonder what it was while they took the time to develop the second generation.

At the time of the first episode's production, nobody knew that "Pokémon" would be such a runaway hit, and I don't believe that anything beyond the first generation had been planned. Houou was probably meant to be interpreted as a mysterious being that wouldn't be seen again, but when the games got so popular that the second generation was made, they probably decided to add Houou to the new group.

That's just a theory I have - in actuality, I have no idea what the thinking behind it was.

Ho-Oh was probably made just to show that there were more Pokemon than the 151. They couldn't have been planning Johto this early because if they did, they would've skipped the Orange Island arc of episodes (though that would mess up the timing of when the Gold and Silver games were released). They probably just put Ho-Oh in there just to make the series more interesting by putting in a Pokemon you couldn't catch. (The same thing went for Togepi.)

No, they were making Gold and Silver before and while Orange Islands was around. That was just filler arc until the games could be released.
Ya, but not at the very beginning. As Jesse pointed out, Pokemon didn't become quite the success until some time later in the anime. Had the writers known about G/S from the beginning, they would have probably stretched out the Kanto region instead of making the Orange Islands at all.

By the time the anime came out in Japan the games had already had success, the anime just exploded it even further, G/S were probably being started on and they wanted to show it as a "look into the future/what's ahead/mystery", the anime guys probably just asked the game developers for a design of a new Poke and gave them a preeliminary of Hooh(they have done this many times like togepi/first movie new pokes etc),

If you're implying that the Animators designed Ho-Oh and Game Freak just decided to include it in the second generation and a Pokemon in general, I find that hard to believe.

Anywhays, as [hopefully] most of you know, Gold/Silver was supposed to be released in late 1997 for the original Gameboy, but then was totally scrapped and built for the Gameboy Color. Along with the news of the new games, 4 New Pokemon were revealed [Donphan, Slowking, Ampharos, and Ho-Oh]. The Anime debuted on April 1st 1997, so my guess is Game Freak gave word that Ho-Oh was going to be a Legendary, thus they showcased it in the anime.

If that isn't forshadowing for them turning into the marketing fiends they are now, I don't know what is o_O

Basically, what everyone else has said. Ho-Oh appeared in the first episode pretty much to prove there were more than just 151 Pokemon at that time. Its appearence in Gotta Catch Ya Later, I think was just to prove that it was indeed Ho-Oh that Ash saw when he started his journey in Kanto. Just my thoughts

Shigeru-kun obviously said that there was a picture of Myuutwo on the door in front of Misaki's lighthouse.

Please read posts carefully before you reply, trying to correct them and failing miserably at it.

Cheer up.
In an interview somewhere (or something), I read that Sugimori already had all 252 planned at the time of Red/Blue/Green. I think he then said when they halfway got through completing G/S/C, they started work on Hoenn.

Wow, I've always wondered about that. And now I know.

I heard that somewhere too. That's the reason why Missingno is is the games.

It was supposed to be released in '97 you say? Any sources?

Anyway, if that is the case, suddenly things start to make a lot of sense to me. See, when I was reading through Coronis's summaries to the Special manga, I was wondering how far in advanced they planned things out considering [spoil]Blue gave Yellow a hat and told her to dress as a boy, for no specified reason. It was later revealed that Blue was using Yellow to elude anyone searching for the Rainbow and Silver Feathers, a critical element to the GSC saga's storyline, by disguising them as the feathers in Yellow's hat. If Gold and Silver were already well planned-out at the time of Yellow Version's release, which of course was partially based on the anime and was the basis for the character Yellow, then I guess they had pretty much all the story elements ready before the development was restarted, thus it was able to tie in with Yellow's story in the manga.[/spoil]

I think Ho-Oh was created in the original batch of Pokemon, and they decided to put it in a further release.
