I think Salamence would be named flygon!
I mean, Bagon wants to fly, Shelgon awaits evolution, and finally... SALAMENCE?! learns fly! its weird!
Bagon - Shelgon - Flygon would fit so perfect! The real Flygon isnt even flying?! What do you think about it?

Flygon does learn Fly though, so therefore, it flies.

Then again, Bagon->Shelgon->Flygon does sound right.

Then again, Salamence sounds more intimidating to to the 's' and 'c' so I reckon Salamence is a better name for Salamence as it is more intimidating which is what Salamence is meant to be.

I was always confused by this. But, aside from the newbies to Pokemon, the names would be better as they are now, because they just seem more...fitting, in a way. Flygon sounds too weak a name for Salamence, and to a lesser extent vice versa.

*Checks Serebiidex* Heh, I just noticed Flygon learns fly.

I'd say Salamence sounds better, it sounds more powerful, like 'menace,' and flygon's called Flygon because... er... he looks quite a bit like some sort of FLY mabye?

He's never used it against me. '.' Then again I haven't faced the E4 for months so I might have and just forgot. ^^'

Have you ever started off with Sceptile (or any Grass or Flying types) and used it against Drake? If you do his Flygon will repeatedly use Fly after using Sandstorm due to the AI. If you use a Blaziken or Swampert is will use Earthquake.

Hmm, funnily enough, I agree with you. Although the Salamance creature, doesn't look like a 'Flygon' type.

Trapinch --> Vibrava --> Salamance

Not too bad.. hehe

I think it's fine how it is. Flygon is based on a fly, not on the fact that it flies. Salamence sounds more menacing for a generic Dragon line.

yeah, i wouldn't want my salamence to be named flygon. it just doesn't sound right. not every evolution line has to have a name pattern

I'll bring back what I said last time this was brought up. IMO this sounds most likely:

Strange. Maybe it's possible that Flygon was the original english name for Salamence, but they scrapped it because Salamence suited it more. Then they probably just ditched the name on Flygon...

Just an idea.
"Fly" probably reminded people of flies, which are seen as small and weak, which contradicts Salamence's image and battle skills as a whole.

Nuckrar: Based off the English words "knuckle" and "sprinkler".
Vibrava: Based off the English words "vibrate" and "larva".
Flygon: Based off the English words "fly", "dragon", and "dragonfly".

Tatsubay: 辰 Tatsu (Fifth sign of the Chinese zodiac, the dragon), Tatsu (Dragon), 兵 Hei (Soldier), and the English word "bay".
Komoruu: 篭る Komoru (To seclude oneself, to confide in, etc.).
Bohmander: 暴慢 Bouman (Outburst), Bou (Japanese sound effect for burning), "Bowman's capsule", and the English word "salamander".

Taken from This thread.

Names are fine to me. They match up with their japanese counterparts.

All this about "Salamence sounds better", i think its just that you are used to the names as they are. I think that if Salamence had been named Flygon, and someone had said that Salamence fitted better, you would think that Flygon sounded mighty and robust, and the "fly" fitted with the fact that it finally learns how to fly, and the "gon" fitted with the "gon" in the rest of the line. Im not sure, but think about it.
